Model Preview

The BMW 5-Series arrived as a fully-updated vehicle in 2017. When the midsize sedan was introduced, the seventh-gen model was introduced with more technology, more powerful engines, and a larger footprint. Entering its sixth model year on sale, the 2022 BMW 5-Series is expected to arrive as a carryover model.

When the 5-Series went on sale for the 2017 model year, it was slightly larger than the previous gen-model and featured more muscular design elements. The round, softer edges of the previous 5-Series were replaced with more aggressive lines. The sharp headlights, large kidney grilles, and angular front fascia highlight the 5-Series’ athleticism. Things are more regal at the back, where the 5-Series wears wraparound taillights and square dual exhaust outlets. Over the years, BMW has updated the sedan’s design to make the 5-Series even sharper. We expect the current design of the 5-Series to remain the same for the 2022 model year.

Inside, the current 5-Series showcases its luxurious side. The sedan boasts a high-end cabin with a dashing design. While not as opulent as some competitors, the 5-Series has sporty elements, like the thick steering wheel, large gear shifter, and paddle shifters. The cabin also features high-end elements like the angled dashboard and upscale trim pieces. The 2022 BMW 5-Series will have the same interior design as the current model.

On the tech front, the current 5-Series comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, navigation, and 12 audio speakers. wi-fi hot spot, a Bowers & Wilkins audio system, and wireless smartphone charging are optional. We expect the same tech features to be available on the 2022 BMW 5-Series.

BMW 5-Series

BMW offers four engines with the current 5-Series. These powertrains will continue to be available on the 2022 model. The standard engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that’s rated at 248 horsepower. The next step up includes the same engine being paired with an electric motor for a combined output of 288 hp. This engine is found in the plug-in hybrid 530e model. 540i trims are powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that makes 335 hp. At the top of the regular 5-Series range sits a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that makes 523 hp. All engines come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is available.

The current 5-Series comes with a lengthy list of standard safety features as standard. Forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam assist are standard. As a carryover model, the 2022 5-Series should come with all of the same features as standard.

Pricing & Release Date

BMW hasn’t provided any information on when the 2022 5-Series will officially go on sale. Based on past years, we expect an arrival date of summer 2021.

Pricing for the 2022 BMW 5-Series remains a mystery. Without any anticipated changes, the 2022 model should have the same range as the current sedan. Pricing is expected to range from $55,195 to $62,745 including destination.

This midsize luxury sedan will compete with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, Genesis G80, and Volvo S90.
