What's New

With an all-new model currently being prototype-tested, there are no significant changes to BMW’s biggest vehicle for the 2022 model year. You still have a choice of two engines and three trims with the X7, with the only revisions to this large luxury SUV centering on enhanced Bluetooth and power sunshades.

Choosing Your BMW X7

The 2022 BMW X7 range includes three models, starting with the xDrive40i, which costs $75,895 including destination. The M Sport pack can be added for $4,350, or you can go the whole hog and choose the M50i for $100,795. A full-fat Alpina XB7 will set you back $142,295.

Engine Choices

The standard X7 comes with a three-liter six-cylinder turbocharged gas engine, generating 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. This is supplied to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission, returning an EPA-estimated 19 miles per gallon city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 combined.

The other two versions incorporate a 4.4-liter V8 gas engine, which generates 523 HP and 554 lb-ft of torque in M50i mode, compared to 612 HP and 590 lb-ft in the Alpina. Fuel economy in these models falls to 15/21/17 MPG.

4.4 V8 (Alpina)612 hp590 lb-ft15/21/17 MPG

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

Cargo capacity for the seven-seater X7 stands at 12.8 cu ft with the rear seats in place, 48.6 cu ft with the third-row dropped and 90.4 cu ft once the second row is lowered.

Safety Features

You expect large SUVs to be safe, and the X7 comes with a comprehensive roster of safety equipment. Dual-stage airbags join collision preparation technology in a cabin that features auto-locking belt retractors and an SOS button. Driver aids include blind-spot detection, lane departure warning and speed limit information, while the X7’s considerable bulk is further advertised by programmable LED daytime running lights and fog lights, plus automatic high-beam assistance for the adaptive full LED headlights.

M50i models add surround-view cameras with 3D view and park distance control, but Alpine trim incorporates BMW’s full Active Driving Assistant Professional package. This includes traffic jam and lane-keeping assistant, emergency stop assistant, evasion aid, and daytime pedestrian protection.

Every X7 comes as standard with smartphone compatibility, navigation with real-time traffic information, and BMW Connected concierge services. However, while base models make do with a ten-speaker stereo, higher trims receive a 16-speaker 464-watt Harman Kardon surround sound system. This is controlled on every model by a 12.3-inch touchscreen, with an identically sized digital instrument cluster facing the driver; a touchpad iDrive controller complements voice control.

X7 xDrive40i – MSRP From $75,895

Sitting on 21-inch wheels, the standard X7 is an imposing vehicle with its satin aluminum roof rails and matching exterior trim. Gloss wood dash inserts distinguish a cabin featuring power front sports seats beneath a panoramic slide-and-lift moonroof, four-zone climate, and keyless entry with hands-free trunk opening. There are heating elements everywhere from the steering wheel to the front armrests, while a power tailgate and acoustic glass are also standard. A smart key stores recently-used settings for the climate, stereo, lighting and seats, plus keyless entry and remote engine starting.

Adding the M Sport pack for $4,350 brings a host of design flourishes including an M steering wheel, sports seats, an Alcantara headliner and double-spoke gray wheels, while it also bundles in navigation, lane departure warnings, and blind-spot detection. The Premium package costs $1,900 and includes soft-closing doors and gesture control alongside a head-up display, while the $3,200 Executive pack combines these with glass controls, heated and cooled cupholders, and an LED roof.

X7 M50i – MSRP From $100,795

Bigger 22-inch wheels and gray exhaust tips distinguish M50i models externally, while the cabin receives leather trim and an Alcantara headliner, electric side rear window shades, and soft-closing doors. A Harman Kardon audio system is standard, while gesture control and a head-up display are welcome features.

You could spend $1,100 adding ventilated and massaging front seats as part of the fittingly-named Luxury Seating Package, or for the same price have five-zone climate and rear heated seats as part of the Cold Weather pack. Glass controls, heated and cooled cupholders, and an LED roof form the cut-price $1,300 Executive Pack on M50i models.

X7 Alpina XB7 – MSRP From $142,295

Alpina-specific sports suspension with adaptive dampers and ventilated brake discs help to keep this 612 HP SUV in check, alongside rear-axle steering. There are numerous visual tweaks such as quad exhaust tailpipes, but the main improvements can be found in the cabin. Nappa leather and myrtle wood trim complement illuminated Alpina door-sill finishers; glass controls provide a more sensory experience, and there’s signature stitching on the similarly tactile leather steering wheel. The front seats offer massaging and ventilation, while the rear seats are heated; even the cupholders come with heating and cooling.

The only pack worth noting on XB7 models is the $2,200 Rear-seat Entertainment Professional system, which adds widescreen display monitors with dedicated controls plus access to navigation and audio settings. We wouldn’t recommend it if you have young children.

CarsDirect Tip

It’s hard to make a case for the Alpina being worth $41,000 more than the M50i when both models have the same engine, but even the lesser model costs a third more than the xDrive40i with only modest specification upgrades. Unless you enjoy taking your SUV to the racetrack or doing quarter-mile sprints, the entry-level X7 ought to be more than sufficient.
