Overview

What's New

The 2022 Cadillac XT4 gets a few new exterior colors but is otherwise unchanged. Cadillac's smallest crossover, the XT4 debuted in 2019 and has received minor equipment updates since then.

Choosing Your Cadillac XT4

The 2022 XT4 luxury SUV continues in three trim levels: Luxury, Sport, and Premium Luxury. Pricing starts at $36,990 including destination for the Luxury and goes to $40,790 for the Premium Luxury.

Engine Choices

Every XT4 packs a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard. All-wheel drive is available on all trims for $2,500.

The XT4 is EPA-rated at 24 miles gallon city, 30 mpg highway, and 26 combined. With AWD, estimates ease to 22/29/24 mpg (city/highway/combined).

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The XT4 is a subcompact, two-row crossover with seating for five. On longer trips, four is the limit for comfort.

The XT4 offers 22.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat and 48.9 cubic feet with it folded. These are average numbers for a luxury crossover of this size. Styling is more important than utility in this class.

Safety Features

The XT4 Luxury comes standard with rear parking sensors and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. The Sport and Premium Luxury also get front parking sensors. Other driver assistance features cost extra, regardless of trim.

The $470 Driver Awareness Package adds a following distance indicator, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available on the Sport and Premium Luxury for $200.

The Sport and Premium Luxury are also eligible for the $1,100 Driver Assist Package, which tacks on adaptive cruise control and radar-enhanced automatic braking with reverse function. With these features in place, buyers can add the Enhanced Visibility Package ($1,500) with surround-view cameras, a rear camera washer, rear pedestrian alert, a rearview camera mirror, and an automated parking system.

The Technology Package for the Sport ($1,400) and Premium Luxury ($1,650) include a head-up display.

The XT4 earns a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.

Connectivity

The standard infotainment system for all trims includes an eight-inch touchscreen, seven speakers, HD and satellite radio, two front and two rear USB ports, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

The optional infotainment system ($1,500) adds navigation and a 13-speaker Bose Centerpoint surround-sound system. Wireless device charging is a $300 standalone option on all trims — and is also available in the Technology Package for the Sport and Premium Luxury.

Cadillac XT4

XT4 Luxury — MSRP From $36,990

The XT4 covers the basics in this class, like an eight-way power driver seat and a six-way power passenger seat, remote start, proximity key access, and a power liftgate. The exterior wears 18-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights and taillights.

The Cold Weather Package ($850) adds a heated steering wheel and heated front and rear seats. With this bundle in place, buyers can add genuine leather seats for $1,500. A dual-pane sunroof is available for $1,700.

There are two appearance packages for the XT4. The $2,695 Onyx Package furnishes monochrome Cadillac emblems, a gloss black grille, and 20-inch gloss black wheels. The $2,470 Radiant Package also includes the monochrome emblems, but with a silver grille and 20-inch polished alloy wheels.

XT4 Sport — MSRP From $40,590

The Sport picks up ambient interior lighting, driver memory settings, a hands-free power liftgate, a cargo cover, and automatic wipers. Buyers also get black exterior trim, red brake calipers, cornering lights, a unique grille, a sport steering wheel, and alloy pedals.

Models equipped with Cold Weather Package are eligible for the $2,050 Comfort Package, which adds leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and an eight-way power passenger seat. These features are also available in the $2,650 Premium Comfort and Convenience Package, along with massaging front seats with power lumbar adjustments. In addition to the head-up display, the Technology Package adds a digital gauge cluster, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and a cabin air purifier.

An adaptive sport suspension ($700) is exclusive to the Sport. The Onyx Package remains available.

XT4 Premium Luxury — MSRP From $40,790

The Premium Luxury loses the Sport's aggressive styling elements but gains standard leather seats and aluminum or wood interior trim. The Comfort Package and Premium Comfort and Convenience Package drop by about $1,500 since leather is already included. The Technology Package increases to $1,650 here because it includes the cornering lights (which are standard on the Sport) and LED front turn signals.

Buyers once again have a choice of the Onyx or Radiant appearance packages.

CarsDirect Tip

The 2022 Cadillac XT4 achieves its attractive starting price by making buyers pay extra for many popular features that are often standard in this class. The Premium Luxury comes closest to the level of standard equipment buyers will expect. Keep in mind the Sport's unique features are purely cosmetic without the adaptive suspension added.

High-end look. The 2022 Cadillac XT4 competes in the fierce subcompact SUV segment. Against competitors like the Volvo XC40, Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLB, and BMW X1, the XT4 manages to stand out because of its stylish lines. Even in Cadillac’s lineup, which features sharply styled models, the XT4 holds its own.

The XT4’s exterior design features a bold grille, sharp taillights that run nearly the full length of the front fascia, and an angular front bumper. Around the back, the boomerang-styled taillights and dual exhaust outlets match the aggressive look of the front end. A wide range of bright colors, many of which cost extra, further help the XT4 look more distinct than rivals.

While the SUV has a bold exterior design, the interior is far more muted. The rising dashboard, the way the touchscreen is integrated into the dashboard, and the single row of buttons are stylish elements on the inside.

Choose options wisely. Official pricing for the 2022 XT4 isn’t available yet, but the subcompact SUV should start at around $37,000. That’s about average for the segment. For that amount of money, the base XT4 comes with dual-zone climate control, an eight-inch touchscreen, a Wi-Fi hot spot, smartphone compatibility, seven audio speakers, synthetic leather upholstery, LED headlights, and a power liftgate.

That’s a decent amount of features for the class, though things like heated seats, a Bose audio system, a wireless smartphone charger, and a rear-seat entertainment system are optional. Adding a few features quickly sees the price of the XT4 rise. It’s best to show some restraint with the XT4’s options, as a fully loaded model can eclipse $51,000.

The mid-level Premium Luxury trim is the most value-oriented one of the bunch, as it opens the door to more high-end features and adds must-have safety features as standard.

Space where it counts. The XT4 isn’t the largest SUV in the subcompact class, but it still offers a competitive amount of interior space. Passengers in the front get 40.4 inches of front legroom, which is more than enough to stretch out. In the back, there’s 39.5 inches of legroom, an impressive amount for a subcompact. The problem with the rear seats is the lack of hip room that makes fitting three adults a squeeze.

Passengers are treated to well-shaped seats that are comfortable. Available features like massaging front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel make the XT4 even more comfortable.

Several competitors in the subcompact class offer more than 50 cubic feet of cargo space. When it comes to cargo capacity, the XT4 offers slightly below average figures, but still has plenty of room. The XT4 offers 22.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and a total of 48.9 cubic feet of cargo space.

Cadillac XT4

Peppy, not fast. Cadillac simplifies things by offering the XT4 with one powertrain. Every model comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that’s rated at 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Besides a hint of lag off the line, the turbocharged engine delivers decent pep. The standard nine-speed automatic transmission makes the best of the engine.

The XT4 has mixed ride quality. For the most part, the subcompact SUV rides well, but large road imperfections and rough stretches of tarmac result in a choppy ride. The issue is exaggerated when the XT4 is fitted with the available 20-inch wheels. With vague steering and so-so handling, the XT4 isn’t the most enjoyable subcompact in the class to drive. Instead, it’s more of a capable cruiser.

For consumers that live in inclement weather, the XT4’s all-wheel-drive system could prove to be an issue. Cadillac charges $2,500 for the system over standard front-wheel drive. When the all-wheel-drive system doesn’t detect any slip, it resorts to going into a fuel-saving two-wheel-drive mode. In inclement weather, the all-wheel-drive system won’t give you maximum grip until it senses that you need it. It’s an extra step that could result in less grip when you need it.

Final thoughts. Going off the numbers, the 2022 Cadillac XT4 is a middle-of-the-ground subcompact SUV. Against the competition, the XT4 has a sharp design, standard turbocharged power, and – if you get the right trim – a decent amount of value.

While the XT4 is available with the latest safety features, a lot of equipment is optional and bundled as part of pricey packages. Some subcompact SUVs, like the Mazda CX-30 and BMW X1, are far more enjoyable to drive than the XT4, while others offer a more lavish ride. The XT4’s eco-focused all-wheel-drive system could be a drawback for consumers in snowy climates.

The Volvo XC40 has a design that’s just as stirring as the XT4’s, but offers more interior space. Volvo’s subcompact option comes with more standard safety features, a more fuel-efficient engine, and a more upscale cabin. The major downside to the XC40 is that it comes with a less powerful standard engine.

For drivers seeking a sporty subcompact SUV, the BMW X1 is the way to go. It has a 228 turbocharged engine that delivers plenty of pep and has lively handling that BMW’s known for. The X1’s 8.8-inch infotainment system looks dated and doesn’t have Android Auto compatibility.
