2022 Chevrolet Malibu: Preview, Pricing, Release Date

Model Preview

When the Chevrolet Malibu went on sale in 2019, it arrived wearing updated exterior styling, which helped the midsize sedan be a more modern option in the competitive class. With the sedan entering its seventh model year on sale since a full redesign, we expect the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu to be a carryover model.

When Chevrolet unveiled the updated Malibu for the 2019 model year, the midsize sedan arrived with a slightly refreshed design. At the front, the Malibu received a new chrome trim piece that connects the headlights, slightly slimmer headlights, and a larger front grille with updated horizontal lines. Updated rear taillights rounded out the changes. As a carryover model, we expect the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu to share the same design as the current model.

On the inside, the current Malibu has an attractive, sweeping design that will carry over for the 2022 model year. The dashboard has a tiered design that separates the dashboard and the glovebox. The touchscreen is integrated into the center console, sitting in the middle of two air vents. Large knobs and buttons make it easy for passengers to differentiate between HVAC and infotainment controls.

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu is expected to come with the same tech features as the current model. Standard features on the current Malibu include an 8-inch touchscreen, a USB port, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six audio speakers, and Bluetooth. Optional features include wireless smartphone charging, Wi-Fi hot spot, a nine-speaker Bose audio system, push-button start, and an 8-inch digital driver display.

Chevy Malibu

There are two available engines for the current Malibu. The standard engine is a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 160 horsepower. A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is available, producing 250 hp. The standard engine is paired with a CVT, while the more powerful 2.0-liter motor comes with a nine-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is the only available drivetrain. These powertrains are expected to remain the same for the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu.

The current Malibu doesn’t offer much in the way of standard safety features, as only a rearview camera is standard. Forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane change alert, lane keeping assist, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, and park assist are all optional. In the IIHS’ testing, the current Malibu earned “Good” ratings in five crash tests, but a “Marginal” rating in the passenger-side small overlap front test. The NHTSA gave the sedan a four-star overall safety rating. We expect these safety features and ratings to remain the same for the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu.

Pricing & Release Date

Chevrolet hasn’t announced when the 2022 Malibu will go on sale. Based on past years, we expect a fall 2021 arrival.

Pricing for the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu remains unclear. Without any changes, we expect the midsize sedan to remain close to the current model’s range of $23,065 to $34,790 (including destination).

This midsize sedan will compete with the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, and Nissan Altima.
