In 2021, the latest-generation Chevrolet Suburban rolled out. For 2022, Chevrolet adds several key features to keep its full-size SUV at the top of the segment. For starters, the optional 6.2-liter V8 engine is now available on all but the base trim. Also, an electronic limited-slip differential is added to the Z71. On all but the base trim, a new 12.3-inch diagonal digital instrument cluster is included. A new feature, Google Assistant functionality, is standard across the product line.
Up front, a gigantic grille marks the Suburban’s front end with standard LED headlights and vertical fog lights pressing in. Its long rectangular profile is formidable with sweeping lines. The Suburban represents the long-wheelbase version of the boxy Chevrolet Tahoe. Chevrolet clads the Suburban with alloy wheels, ranging from 18 to 22 inches. Most trims offer available power running boards for ease of access and egress. At the rear, the Suburban’s liftgate is offset by LED taillights. The square rear design makes it easy to load cargo.
This model seats seven or eight, or nine with the available front bench seat on the base trim. The best arrangement is for seven seats as the middle-row captain’s chairs are nearly as comfortable as the front bucket seats. Still, with an extended wheelbase, the third-row space is quite good, even with a bench seat in front of it. Chevrolet dresses the Suburban’s interior with leather, soft-touch materials, and chrome-like trim.
Among the driver-assist safety features, the Suburban gains standard lane-keep assist with lane departure warning and front and rear parking assist on all trims for 2022. Other standard features include automatic headlights, a rear seat minder, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control are available, but on top-trim models only.
A 12.3-inch configurable digital instrument panel is now standard on all but the base trim. Moreover, the camera system is upgraded to now include more than a dozen views. The list of standard tech features is strong and is comprised of a 10.2-inch touchscreen display, Wi-Fi hotspot, Google Assistant, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility. A six-speaker audio system with satellite radio and HD Radio is standard. A 15-inch head-up display, navigation, and multiple USB ports are available.
Three engine choices are available and that’s two more than the competing Ford Expedition. A 5.3-liter V8 gas motor and a 3.0-liter turbodiesel six-cylinder are available on most trims. This year, the availability of the optional 6.2-liter V8 gas engine extends to all but the base trim. A 10-speed automatic transmission is paired with all three engines.
