The redesigned Honda Civic Type R will debut in 2022, at least half a year after the introduction of the regular Civic. Although Honda has not yet released 2022 Civic Type R specs or prices just yet, we do have an early teaser image showing a camouflaged version of the high-performance car undergoing tests on the Nürburgring.
In terms of styling, expect a significantly sportier version of the 11th-generation Civic hatchback. The regular 5-door debuted in the fall of 2021, offering hatchback shoppers one of the only remaining models with an available manual transmission. We anticipate the next Type R will continue to only be available with a manual.
Having said that, Honda hasn't confirmed whether or not an automatic Type R will ever be offered. To put that into perspective, vehicles like the Volkswagen Golf R continue to offer a fast-shifting dual-clutch transmission. The 2022 Golf R is slated for a major redesign and will likely be one of the Type R's main competitors.
In terms of power, the current Type R is rated at up to 306 horsepower based on a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. While 2022 Civic specs didn't exactly break ground when it comes to new technology, we expect the next-gen Type R to offer an exciting blend of track-ready performance when it eventually goes on sale.
Competition in this segment has thinned in recent years. While Hyundai continues to build a high-performance Veloster N, Ford no longer offers the power-packed Focus RS. In terms of alternatives, Honda hasn't unveiled the next-gen Civic Si just yet, and there's no word yet on key differences with the redesigned Type R.
Stay tuned for updates as they become available.
