Model Preview

Celebrating their 80th year, Jeep introduced the fifth generation lineup of the Grand Cherokee, which features a new plug-in hybrid called the 4xe. This unveiling serves as the start of the brand’s plan to have a zero-emissions SUV in every one of its categories by 2025.

The 2022 model has a new exterior which gives the vehicle a sculpted look that appears more modern and is meant to improve passenger comfort. The roof and the beltline are lowered for aerodynamics and to allow more outward visibility from the cabin, without sacrificing cargo space. The track has been widened to 36mm and there are eight tire options that are offered at up to a 21-inch diameter. The seven-slot grille on the fascia is larger and contains long-range radar.

The new PHEV has an impressive towing capacity of around 6,000-lbs. Under the hood, the Grand Cherokee 4xe has a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, two electric motors, eight-speed automatic transmission, and a 400-volt, 17-kWh EV battery. This gives 375 horsepower and 470-lb.-ft. of torque for an estimated 25 miles of electric range and 57 MPGe, a combined driving range of around 440 miles. The 4x4 systems as well as the Quadra-Lift and Selec-Terrain systems give power to the 4xe to perform its best.

Inside, the full-size SUV has a two-row cabin with 144.6 cu. ft. of interior passenger volume and 37.7 cu. ft. of cargo space. The 16-way adjustable front seats have memory and power lumbar, an adjustable length cushion, and three-level control heat and ventilation. Some trims even offer back massage technology in the driver and front passenger seats. The upholstery is available in Palermo leather if you opt for the more exclusive Summit Reserve trim.

The new front panel has a realigned center stack for better access to the driver, slimmer HVAC vents, and 10.1-inch digital screens. Also new is the segment-first 10.25-inch front passenger screen that can be used for co-pilot assistance as well as entertainment.

This generation of Grand Cherokees is the most technologically advanced yet. Features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Andriod Auto, as well as Wi-Fi hotspot and a wireless charging pad located in the center console help create smartphone compatibility. But Jeep didn’t stop there, having available features like Uconnect 5, and backseat digital displays that can be used for entertainment, climate settings, and come with Amazon FireTV. The 4xe also boasts a 950-watt, 19-speaker McIntosh audio system.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe comes equipped with over 110 safety features, such as adaptive cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear back-up camera, lane-keeping technology, brake assist, and collision warning. Other available safety features include a night vision camera, drowsy driver detection, parking assist, traffic sign detection, and a 360-degree camera system.

Pricing & Release Date

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is set to arrive in U.S. dealerships early next year.

Pricing for the 4xe will likely be announced closer to the release date. As electrified vehicles typically cost more, we expect the Grand Cherokee 4xe to be on the more expensive side of the pricing scale, however, it may be subject to state rebates and federal tax credit.

Some potential competitors for this plug-in SUV include the likes of the Kia Sorento PHEV and Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV.
