The Jeep Renegade has been around since 2015 and has received modest changes through the years. For 2021, Jeep padded the standards feature list to include more tech and safety equipment. Also, a limited-edition Islander trim joined the product line. The 2022 Renegade will likely be a carryover with few changes.
The Jeep Renegade is a subcompact utility vehicle with a small cabin but is roomy for four. It shares a platform with the Fiat 500X, but is designed for off-road adventuring where the Fiat is not. Indeed, some trims feature front tow hooks, a skid plate, along with a specially designed front end to increase ground clearance. It comes with18.5 cubic feet of standard cargo space or 50.8 cubic feet with the rear seat folded.
The cabin is uncluttered and orderly, just as we’ve always seen with the Renegade. Chunky styling, metallic accents, and hard black plastics are the rule. But the fit and finish is quite good. Most models feature cloth seating surfaces with leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and power-adjusted front seats on certain trims.
On the tech front, the Renegade comes with a 7-inch touch-screen display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility, one USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, and six speakers. Among the available upgrades is an 8.4-inch touch-screen display, navigation, an additional USB port, and a nine-speaker audio system with HD Radio.
The standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine produces 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. Power routes to the front or all four wheels utilizing a 9-speed automatic transmission.
Also available is a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 177 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque. This one also works with a 9-speed automatic and does a better job of moving this little utility vehicle.
Jeep expanded the Renegade’s standard safety equipment list in 2020 and it carries forward this year. All models come with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and lane keep assist. Also available is automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, and park assist.
