Model Preview

The 2021 Kia K5 arrived as the all-new replacement for the aging, but quite successful, Optima. The 2022 Kia K5 is right around the corner, and we expect it to be a carryover model.

The current Kia K5 boasts a bold, sporty look that includes a striking nose with a wide tiger-nose grille, LED lighting, and zigzag signature lighting. The eye-grabbing nose is further accented by its long hood with distinct ridges. Around back, the K5 features LED taillights with a zigzag pattern, a full-length LED light bar, sporty dual exhaust, and a sharp coupelike C-pillar rake. We expect this look to remain the same in the 2022 Kia K5.

Inside, the current Kia K5 features a relatively standard Kia cabin with plenty of style and class to go around. This toned-down interior focuses on horizontal lines to visually widen the space and includes light metallic touches, a flat-bottom steering wheel, a T-style shifter, and a dash-top infotainment screen, and limited buttons and knobs in the center stack. Buyers can add a little pop with the optional red leather. We expect this classy and sporty look to remain the same in the 2022 Kia K5.

The K5 comes well-equipped with standard LED headlights, twin USB ports, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and Bluetooth. We expect these standard features to remain the same in the 2022 K5.

Kia K5

Under its hood, the current K5 comes with two flavors of turbo four-cylinder. The base powertrain is a 1.6-liter unit with 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The optional setup is a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 290 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. We expect the 2022 K5 to continue with the same two powertrain options.

The IIHS hasn’t tested Kia K5 yet, but it comes standard with automatic emergency braking and active lane control. Optionally, buyers can add blind-spot monitors, automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera. We expect these features to remain the same in the 2022 K5.

Pricing & Release Date

There’s no official release date set for the 2022 Kia K5 yet, but based on last year’s schedule, we expect a summer 2021 arrival.

Pricing is also unannounced, but with no changes in the works, we expect the 2022 Kia K5’s MSRP range to remain close to the 2021 model’s $24,455 to $31,455 (destination fees included) range.

This midsize sedan will compete with the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, and Nissan Altima.
