Lexus introduced an updated IS for the 2021 model year, giving the compact luxury sedan a sharper exterior design, retuned suspension, and an updated infotainment system. With the sedan entering its ninth model year on sale, we expect the 2022 Lexus IS to be a carryover model.
When Lexus unveiled the updated IS, the compact sedan arrived with similar lines, but sharper elements. As a carryover model, we expect the 2022 IS to retain the same overall design as the current model that’s on sale. At the front, two angular headlights straddle an enormous grille that runs from the bottom of the bumper up to the tip of the hood. The rear end has sharp taillights that wrap around to the side of the body and are connected by a thin horizontal light.
On the inside, the current IS offers a premium experience for passengers. The sedan features a modern dashboard layout with the infotainment screen sitting atop the dashboard, while the controls are placed by the shift knob. The analog clock is a throwback element, but an iconic touch on any Lexus, while the round vents, thick steering wheel, and slightly angled shift knob are sportier touches. The 2022 Lexus IS will retain the same interior design as the current model.
Standard tech features on the IS include an 8-inch touchscreen, Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and satellite radio. Optional features include a 10.3-inch touchscreen, a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, and navigation. We expect these features to remain the same for the 2022 IS.
Lexus currently offers three powertrains with the IS and we expect them to remain the same for the 2022 model year. The standard engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 241 horsepower. Rear-wheel drive is standard with the base engine. Two 3.5-liter V6 engines are available, with output being rated at 260 hp and 311 hp. All-wheel drive is standard for the 260-hp engine, while rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are offered with the 311-hp engine.
New for 2022 will be the IS 500 F Sport Performance which brings a 5.0-liter V8 engine with 472 horsepower and 395 lb-ft of torque.
The current IS comes with a lengthy list of standard safety features, which includes blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, and traffic sign recognition. The IIHS named the current IS a Top Safety Pick+. These safety features and ratings should remain the same for the 2022 Lexus IS.
