What's New

The 2022 Lexus IS lineup gains an IS 500 F Sport Performance model powered by a 472-hp V8 engine. The carryover IS 300 can get a new Premium Package with more than a dozen popular features. A power rear sunshade is available for the first time. The Lexus IS received a thorough redesign just last year.

Choosing Your Lexus IS

The IS now comes in four trim levels: IS 300, IS 350 F Sport, IS 500 F Sport Performance, and IS 500 F Sport Performance Premium. Pricing starts at $39,850 including destination and reaches $62,075 for the IS 500 F Sport Performance Premium.

Engine Choices

Rear-drive versions of the IS 300 carry a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while models equipped with all-wheel drive run with a V6. The IS 350 F Sport receives a high-output version of the V6 engine. A V8 is exclusive to the new IS 500 F Sport Performance trims.

The AWD and V6 combo costs $2,000 on the IS 300. AWD is available on the IS 350 F Sport for $2,000. The IS 500 F Sport Performance is RWD only.

RWD models use an eight-speed automatic transmission, whereas AWD versions carry a six-speed automatic. Both transmissions are equipped with paddle shifters.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Lexus IS is a compact sport sedan with seating for five, although four is the limit for comfortable travel. Even then, taller rear passengers may feel squished on long trips. Trunk space is modest at 10.8 cubic feet, so the split-folding rear seat will come in handy.

Safety Features

The IS comes well-equipped for safety from the start. Standard driver assistance features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, road sign recognition, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection.

At this level of standard equipment, options are few. Buyers can select front and rear parking sensors with reserve automatic braking for $565. A surround-view camera can be added to the bundle for a total cost of $1,365. A head-up display isn't offered on the IS.

The standard infotainment system features an eight-inch touchscreen, 10 speakers, two USB ports, satellite radio, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

The IS 300 and IS 350 F Sport are available with navigation ($1,670) and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound system ($1,080). Models equipped with navigation get a 10.3-inch touchscreen. These features aren't available on the regular IS 500 F Sport Performance, but come standard on the Premium model.

2022 Lexus IS 300 – MSRP From $39,850

The IS 300 starts off with eight-way power front seats, NuLuxe leatherette upholstery, proximity entry, auto-dimming side mirrors, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The $2,475 Comfort Package adds heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a sunroof, automatic wipers, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with integrated universal home remote. These items are also available in the $4,120 Premium Package, along with a power-adjustable steering wheel, driver memory settings, auto-tilting side mirrors, a rear center armrest with cupholders, a power rear sunshade, and 19-inch wheels. Triple-beam LED headlights are a standalone option, priced at $1,250.

2022 Lexus IS 350 F Sport – MSRP From $44,275

The F Sport draws out the IS's sporting potential with the 311-hp V6, a front cool air intake, sport exhaust, performance instrumentation, aerodynamic body trim, and standard 19-inch wheels. Inside are heated and ventilated front sport seats, 10-way power driver adjustments, a heated sport steering wheel, and aluminum pedals covers. Automatic wipers are also standard.

The F Sport Dynamic Handling Package ($4,200) endows the F Sport with an adaptive sport suspension, a limited-slip rear differential, additional driving modes, 19-inch forged alloy wheels, carbon fiber body components, and ash wood interior trim. The sunroof and power sunshade are available on an individual basis, priced at $1,100 and $210, respectively. The $575 Memory Package adds the driver memory settings, power-adjustable steering wheel, and auto-tilting side mirrors.

2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance – MSRP From $57,575

The new IS 500 F Sport Performance packs the V8 engine, plus the Dynamic Handling package as standard. Other performance upgrades include larger brakes, stacked quad exhausts, Yamaha rear performance dampers, and 19-inch Enkei alloy wheels. A raised hood and dark chrome window surround complete the exterior look. The Memory Package and sunroof are standard on the IS 500. There are no factory options for this trim.

2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance Premium – MSRP From $62,575

The F Sport Performance Premium picks up the remaining non-performance equipment: the Mark Levinson system, navigation, the triple-beam headlights, and the power sunshade.

CarsDirect Tip

The 2022 Lexus IS 300 almost begs for AWD since Lexus throws in the V6 engine for the same $2,000. The 350 F Sport is indeed faster, but doesn't handle any better without the pricey Dynamic Handling Package added. The new IS 500 F Sport Performance line dwells on a different performance plane, which is reflected in its price. Even so, it's a clear bargain among V8 sport sedans.

V8 Engine Arrives. The big news for the 2022 Lexus IS is that the automaker now offers the sports sedan with a V8 engine again. There’s a new IS 500 F Sport Performance that’s powered by a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 engine. In the modern era where automakers are moving toward turbocharged six-cylinder engines for high-performance vehicles, the IS 500’s V8 engine should be celebrated.

While the IS 500 is new, the 5.0-liter V8 is virtually the same engine found in the IS F from 2008. With 472 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque, we don’t think people will mind that the engine is now almost old enough to drive. The V8 brings a zero-to-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds and a distinctive sound that no other vehicle in the class can match.

While the V8 is a fantastic engine, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine and 3.5-liter V6 aren’t. These are the same engines that the IS has had for years and remain unchanged. They don’t compare well to engines found in rivals and feel like they’re in need of a serious makeover.

Still Good Value. Last year, the IS finally received a touchscreen. That fixed one of our largest issues with the sedan. Unfortunately, Lexus didn’t update the infotainment system and the touchpad is still fitted on the center console. Still, the standard eight-inch touchscreen is generous in size and comes with Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, Android Auto, 10 Audi speakers, Bluetooth, and two USB ports. These features help the IS be a strong value option in the class.

Lexus offers the IS sedan with an impressive list of available features. A 10.3-inch touchscreen, navigation, an eight-inch digital instrument cluster, and a rich-sounding 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system are available. These features may not have the allure of more modern features on rivals, but they cost a lot less.

Beyond performance, there’s little reason to move up to higher IS trims. The sedan comes standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, keyless entry, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and power-adjustable front seats. It’s a great list of equipment for a sedan that costs $39,850 with destination.

Lexus IS

Great Safety Features and Scores. Every IS sedan comes standard with the Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 suite of advanced safety features. The suite includes the standard equipment of automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, and pedestrian detection. But it goes above and beyond with traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The few optional safety features include parking sensors and a surround-view parking camera.

In crash-testing, the IS earned great scores from both the IIHS and the NHTSA. The IIHS named the sedan a Top Safety Pick+ vehicle, while the NHTSA gave the vehicle a five-star overall safety rating. You’re definitely safe in the IS.

Angry Exterior, Tranquil Interior. From the outside, you expect the IS to be a crazed sports sedan that only wants to go fast. With Lexus’ enormous grille, sharp headlights, angular body lines, and bulbous rear end, the IS certainly makes a case for being the most aggressive-looking sedan in the class. While the new IS 500 is the only one in the lineup that backs the design with serious performance, the others still look great.

The interior design of the IS feels old and outdated compared to rivals, but it still offers passengers with a premium experience. Everything you touch and look at is a high-quality material, while the nifty instrument cluster that transforms based on what drive mode you’re in is still a fresh take on how to incorporate technology in a sporty way.

The biggest issue with the IS sedan is its lack of spacious seats. The front seats are supportive but aren’t comfortable for long drives because of their stiff padding. In the back, there’s not much legroom for passengers and all-wheel-drive models have a hump in the back because of a driveshaft that eats into precious rear legroom. Forget about cargo capacity, as the sedan offers just 10.8 cubic feet of cargo space.

Final Thoughts. The 2022 Lexus IS isn’t the newest kid on the block and it certainly falls behind competitors on the tech and comfort front. But the IS has a sporty design, a premium cabin, and a naturally aspirated V8 engine that feels alive. It continues to be a strong value option, though it lacks the same features as rivals.

The Genesis G70 is another standout value choice. It has a gorgeous design, an upscale interior, agile handling, and high-tech features. Just like the IS, it doesn’t have a lot of rear-seat legroom. The BMW 3-Series has been the benchmark in the segment for years. It has a mix of luxury, performance, and technology that only a few can match.
