Overview

What's New

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 takes on a fresh appearance with a bolder front fascia, redesigned taillights, and new wheel designs. All-wheel drive is now standard on all models. Trim levels receive new names, but equipment groupings are similar to last year.

Choosing Your Mazda CX-5

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 now comes in eight trim levels: S, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, Premium Plus, Turbo, and Turbo Signature. Pricing starts at $27,125 including destination and reaches $39,875 for the Turbo Signature.

Engine Choices

Most first six trims run with a normally aspirated four-cylinder engine. The Turbo trims receive a turbocharged version of the four-cylinder.

All-wheel drive is now standard across the lineup. Every CX-5 carries a six-speed automatic transmission.

Although Mazda used to sell a diesel CX-5, it has long since been discontinued. Unlike competitors, there isn't a hybrid or plug-in hybrid option when buying the CX-5.

2.5L Turbo 4-Cylinder250 hp320 lb-ft24 mpg

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The CX-5 is a compact, two-row crossover with adequate room for five. Cargo space is typical for this class. The CX-5 can swallow 30.9 cubic feet of stuff behind the rear seat and 59.3 cubic feet with it folded.

Safety Features

Every CX-5 carries a full complement of driver assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, automatic high beams, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. A head-up display is standard starting with the Premium Plus.

The Turbo Signature comes with several additional features: traffic sign recognition, a driver alertness monitor, front and rear parking sensors, surround-view cameras, and rear automatic emergency braking.

Connectivity

The CX-5's standard infotainment system consists of a 10.25-inch touchscreen, four speakers, HD radio, two front USB ports, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Moving up to the Select brings six speakers and two rear USB ports.

Starting with the Premium trim, all models get a 10-speaker Bose sound system and satellite radio. The Turbo trims also feature wireless device charging.

Built-in navigation is exclusive to the Turbo Signature. The other trims can get an SD card-based navigation system for $450.

Mazda CX-5

2022 Mazda CX-5 S — MSRP From $27,125

The base CX-5 provides a cloth interior, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, push-button start, a 4.6-inch driver info display, LED headlights, automatic wipers, and 17-inch wheels. There are no factory options packages for the S or any other CX-5 trim.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Select — From $29,125

The Select offers leatherette upholstery with suede inserts, heated front seats, a six-way power driver seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and proximity entry. Rear passengers are treated to privacy glass and separate air conditioning vents.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Preferred — From $30,825

The Preferred gains a leather interior, an eight-way power driver seat and six-way power passenger seat, a power liftgate, and a sunroof.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Edition — From $31,945

The Carbon Edition wears exclusive Polymetal Gray paint, black body trim, and 19-inch metallic black wheels. The interior receives black trim with red stitching. Other equipment is shared with the Preferred.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Premium — From $34,130

The Premium picks up full LED exterior lighting, adaptive headlights, heated side mirrors, a seven-inch driver display, and paddle shifters. The Bose system is standard on this and higher trim levels.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Premium Plus — From $35,175

The Premium Plus adds the head-up display, power-folding side mirrors, wiper de-icers, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Turbo — From $37,625

The Turbo gets a performance boost from the turbocharged 2.5-liter. The outside receives a gloss black grille and matching trim elements. Otherwise, the Turbo is equipped like the Premium Plus.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Turbo Signature — From $39,875

The Turbo Signature goes into luxury territory with Nappa leather seats, a black cloth headliner, and real wood interior trim. The Signature switches to a bright grille and body-color exterior trim. Buyers also get navigation and the aforementioned safety tech upgrades.

CarsDirect Tip

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is easier to configure this year thanks to additional trim levels and the elimination of option packages. Among the non-turbo models, the Preferred is certainly the most attractive value. If you want the extra performance of the turbocharged engine, we recommend going straight to the Signature, where you get it all for under $40,000.

Even Prettier Design. Mazda has taken the already gorgeous CX-5 and given it an updated design for 2022. While the changes are relatively small when compared to a 2021 model, they do result in a more upscale look for the compact SUV.

At the front, the SUV gets more defined LED headlights, an updated grille with a new mesh texture, and a smoother front fascia. The rear end gets similar updates with a cleaner rear fascia and updated LED taillights. New wheel designs finish off the changes.

Mazda didn’t touch the interior design for the 2022 model year’s update, but it didn’t need to. The CX-5 has one of the nicest-looking cabins in the segment with clear gauges, angular vents, and a tiered dashboard. The way Mazda’s engineers organized the controls for the HVAC system also mirrors the design used by luxury brands.

Actually Enjoyable. Few SUVs in the compact class are as enjoyable to drive as the CX-5. For 2022, Mazda has revised the CX-5’s suspension and frame for a smoother ride. We didn’t think there was anything to fix with the ride, but the CX-5 performs even better over poor roads. Find a curvy road and the CX-5’s direct steering, minimal body roll, and quick adjustments result in an SUV that’s fun to drive. The CX-5 is easily the most enjoyable vehicle in its class.

While the CX-5 delivers athletic handling, the SUV’s base engine kills the vibe. The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is rated at 187 horsepower. On paper, the engine doesn’t have enough power, but in the real world, it’s plenty powerful enough. It just doesn’t match have the same wow factor as the SUV’s handling.

The turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine has the character to back up the CX-5’s handling. When running on premium fuel, the turbocharged engine makes 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. It’s a peppy engine that delivers impressive acceleration. It’s our obvious choice of engine, though it’s only available on the top two trims.

The CX-5’s six-speed automatic transmission has been retuned to be more responsive. The transmission delivers snappy shifts. Unlike competitors that have more than six gears, the CX-5 doesn’t hunt for gears. The SUV is only available with all-wheel drive for the 2022 model year, which is a good thing as the AWD system aids in cornering and provides drivers with the confidence to head out in a winter storm.

Mazda CX-5

So-So Interior Space. Because of the way the CX-5 drives, you’ll want to drive the vehicle. Unfortunately, that SUV doesn’t have a lot of space for passengers. The seats have been redesigned to provide more comfort than before, but the CX-5’s main problem is the lack of rear legroom. Passengers in the back get 39.6 inches of rear legroom, which is nearly a full inch off of the Honda CR-V.

Another downside to the CX-5’s interior is the lack of cargo space. The SUV has 31 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and a total of 59.6 cubic feet of space. With options like the CR-V and Hyundai Tucson offering roughly 75 cubic feet of cargo space, the CX-5 is well below average.

Well-Equipped, But Unconventional. Mazda offers the CX-5 with a competitive list of standard features. The SUV comes with a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, two USB ports, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and four audio speakers. With the majority of competitors coming with a seven- or eight-inch touchscreen, the CX-5’s large display is impressive.

Unfortunately, while the display takes up a lot of space on the dashboard and has great graphics, it’s tricky to use. Instead of being a touchscreen, the display is controlled through a rotary knob and a few physical buttons on the center console. It’s unintuitive and difficult to use on the go.

The CX-5 comes with a healthy list of standard safety features, leaving features like traffic sign recognition, parking sensors, a surround-view camera, reverse automatic emergency braking, and a head-up display as optional equipment. The 2022 CX-5 did well in crash tests, earning a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA.

Final Thoughts. The 2022 Mazda CX-5 puts driver enjoyment close to the top of its priority list. It has a strong turbocharged engine and athletic handling that drivers will definitely enjoy. The SUV’s upscale cabin and well-equipped base trim are also high marks. The CX-5 trades performance for interior space, which may not be a good compromise for some looking for something that's a lot bigger than a Mazda3.

The Volkswagen Tiguan is one of the few compact SUVs on sale that offers seating for up to seven. It’s not nearly as powerful or as sporty as the CX-5 but has a refined ride and impressive tech features. The Hyundai Tucson is available with three efficient engines, has a massive cargo area, comes packed with features, and has a bold look.
