2022 Mazda CX-50: Preview, Pricing, Photos, Release Date

Model Preview

The Mazda CX-50 will be a new crossover model for 2022. Although it may sound like a replacement for the CX-5, word has it that Mazda will sell both models alongside each other. The SUV will be the first Mazda built out of a joint-venture factory with Toyota based out of Huntsville, Alabama.

In terms of styling, the CX-50 should look quite familiar when compared to current Mazda models like the CX-30 and CX-5. However, a closer look finds sculpted character lines in the hood, redesigned roof rails, and premium features like a panoramic moonroof to help set the model apart.

Although we don't have full CX-50 specs just yet, Mazda has confirmed that the SUV will feature a 2.5L engine at launch, as well as its more powerful 2.5L turbocharged mill as a higher-end option. What's more, the brand says a CX-50 Hybrid will eventually be produced in the coming years.

When you consider the fact that Mazda doesn't even offer a hybrid at this stage, that could be a pretty big deal. Even though the brand invested in diesel technology, the move proved expensive for shoppers and quite unpopular. Mazda expects more vehicles to be electrified in the future.

Like all 2022 Mazda SUVs, the CX-50 will come standard with all-wheel drive. New drive modes in the brand's Mi-Drive system promise enhanced off-road handling and towing capabilities. Having said that, official CX-50 towing specs and horsepower ratings have not yet been revealed.

In terms of its name, a CX-50 seems to make sense considering the addition of the smaller CX-30. Further down the line, additional SUVs such as the CX-70 and CX-90 are expected to arrive and will heavily bolster the company's lineup of premium crossover vehicles here in the United States.

Pricing & Release Date

Mazda will begin production of the new CX-50 in January 2022. We estimate an on-sale date shortly thereafter.

Official CX-50 pricing has not yet been announced. For now, we expect it to start higher than current CX-5 prices, which are priced from $26,545 including destination.

The CX-50 is expected to compete with all-wheel-drive versions of the Toyota RAV4, Jeep Cherokee, Ford Escape, and Subaru Crosstrek.
