What's New
The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata offers a new gray exterior paint color, a new leather hue called terracotta, and an additional dynamic chassis control system for improved handling. As before, the Miata is available with a soft-top roof or a power hardtop called the Miata RF.
Choosing Your Mazda MX-5 Miata
There are three trim levels offered, Sport (soft-top only), Club, and Grand Touring. Pricing ranges from $28,315 to $33,315.
Engine Choices
The 2022 Miata is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that creates 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 pound-feet at 4,000 rpm that is mated to a six-speed manual while a six-speed automatic is available on the Grand Touring for $550. That’s notably less power than the Toyota GR86 but the Miata is also about 400 pounds lighter and its rear-wheel-drive arrangement allows for balanced handling.
That focus on low weight also helps the Miata earn an EPA-estimated 29 miles per gallon combined (30 mpg with the automatic) which saves about $700 per year versus the thirstier Toyota.
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
The 2022 Miata is strictly a two-seater and its signature small size means the Mazda team had to be creative to ensure most body sizes could fit. At 154.1 inches, the Miata is 13 inches shorter, 1.5 inches narrower, and sits 2.5 inches lower than the Toyota.
That doesn’t mean that it's too compact inside with 52.2 inches of shoulder room and 37.4 inches of headroom which are 1.4 inches less but 0.4-inches more, respectively than the GR 86. As one might expect, the Miata's tiny dimensions leave just 4.59 cubic feet of cargo space.
Safety Features
All 2022 Miatas feature automatic emergency braking, blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane departure warning while the Grand Touring models add automatic high-beam headlights, traffic sign recognition, and rain-sensing wipers.
Connectivity
The Sport trim is equipped with a seven-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, Bluetooth, aux and USB inputs, and six speakers including speakers mounted in the driver’s seat headrests. The Club trim adds speakers to the passenger’s headrest along with a Bose sound system, SiriusXM, and, new for 2022, wireless Apple CarPlay. Navigation is optional for $400 and is standard on the Grand Touring trim.
