Overview

What's New

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class receives only detail changes following last year's total redesign. AMG models now come with a standard USB-C cable adaptor and are available with a new Night Plus appearance package.

Choosing Your Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

The GLA-Class lineup comprises three trim levels: 250, AMG 35, and AMG 45. Pricing starts at $37,450 including destination and tops out at $56,000 for the AMG 45.

Engine Choices

The GLA 250 carries a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Upgrading to the AMG 35 brings a high-output version of the same engine. Exclusive to the AMG 45 is a hand-built, high-performance 2.0-liter turbo.

The GLA 250 starts out with front-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive is available for $2,000. AWD is standard on the AMG models. Every GLA uses an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The GLA-Class is a subcompact crossover with seating for five, although the rear seat is a tight fit for three adults. Cargo space is also stingy at 15.4 cubic feet, but folding the rear seat opens up 50.5 cubic feet, which is typical for a luxury crossover this size.

Safety Features

Every GLA comes with blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, driver attention monitoring, and front collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking.

The $1,700 Driver Assistance Package provides adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, evasive steering assist, speed limit assist, and rear collision mitigation. The $1,090 Parking Assistance Package adds a surround-view camera and an automated parking system. A head-up display is a $1,100 standalone option.

Connectivity

The standard infotainment setup includes a seven-inch touchscreen with a touchpad controller, eight speakers, four USB-C ports, HD radio, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The multi-feature Premium Package ($1,750) for the 250 includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen, which is standard on the AMG models, and satellite radio. The latter is part of an $800 Premium Package for the AMG 35 and comes standard on the AMG 45.

Navigation ($1,295) and a 13-speaker Burmester surround-sound system ($850) are optional on all trims. Gesture controls can be added to the larger touchscreen for $200. Wireless device charging also costs $200.

GLA 250 — MSRP From $37,450

The 250 provides popular convenience features like eight-way power front seats with memory, a power liftgate, push-button start, automatic wipers, and a seven-inch digital cockpit. The exterior wears full LED lighting and 18-inch wheels. Leather upholstery is available for $1,450 in place of the standard leatherette. A panoramic sunroof costs $1,500.

In addition to the larger touchscreen, the Premium Package adds a 10.25-inch instrument display, power-folding side mirrors with driver auto-dimming, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a hands-free power tailgate, and proximity keyless access. The optional adaptive suspension ($990) features Comfort and Sport modes.

Most interior upgrades are available on an individual basis. Buyers can select heated and ventilated front seats ($950), multi-contour front seats ($760), a heated steering wheel ($250), wood trim ($325), a sliding rear seat with center armrest ($360), and ambient LED lighting ($310).

For a racier character, Mercedes-Benz offers an AMG Line Package ($2,600) with front sport seats, 19-inch AMG wheels, and aggressive AMG trim throughout. The same treatment is available in the AMG Line with Night Package ($3,000), along with gloss black exterior accents. Adaptive LED headlights can be added for $900.

GLA AMG 35 — MSRP From $49,000

The AMG 35 gets the 302-hp 2.0-liter, an adaptive sport suspension, a Sport Plus driving mode, and the contents of the AMG Line Package. The Premium Package drops to $800 because the larger touchscreen and 10.25-inch instrument cluster are already standard. The AMG Performance Seat Package ($3,270) provides heated front performance seats with multi-contour controls.

The $750 AMG Night Package adds the gloss black exterior accents. The new AMG Night Plus Package ($1,150) extends the black treatment to the grille louvers and badges for a total blackout effect. The AMG Aerodynamics Package ($1,500) tacks on aerodynamic body components.

GLA AMG 45 — MSRP From $56,000

The AMG 45 packs the 382-hp engine, plus rear torque vectoring, a sport exhaust system, and the Premium Package as standard. Exclusive to this trim, the AMG Dynamic Plus Package ($2,050) adds composite brakes, a Race driving mode, an upgraded performance steering wheel, and a performance data recorder.

CarsDirect Tip

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class serves as a capable entry point to this luxury brand. The GLA 250 needs the Premium Package and a handful of individual options to feel like a proper luxury vehicle, but at least the options are reasonably priced. That said, the 250's performance is nothing special for this class. Buyers expecting some thrills should report to one of the AMG models.

Small engines, surprisingly fun. The good-things-come-in-small-packages ethos starts to ring true for the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class. All versions are powered by a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, but with three stages of tuning. Front-wheel drive is standard on the GLA 250, with optional all-wheel drive, and the GLA 35 and GLA 45 have standard all-wheel drive.

For many drivers, the GLA 250 will be more than sufficient. Its 221 horsepower moves the relatively small SUV with ease and the eight-speed automated transmission keeps the power on tap in nearly every situation. And EPA fuel economy estimates of up to 28 mpg combined city/highway is an added bonus.

That said, the GLA 35 and GLA 45 are more entertaining. With 302 and 382 horsepower, respectively, they also have altered ride heights, suspension, brakes, and steering to feel more like quick small hatchbacks than SUVs. And that relatively small size and added all-wheel-drive grip means they are nearly unrivaled in this type of vehicle in the US.

Technology that can dazzle. The showcase of the GLA's interior is technology, partly because there's so much of it. The standard MBUX infotainment system uses two configurable screens — one of which is in front of the driver and replaces physical instrument gauges — to display vehicle information and multimedia. And the standard voice assistant is supposed to be capable of natural commands to alter the temperature, audio, or navigation, while a gesture control system is also available.

Two eight-inch screens are standard, but look small compared to the optional 10.25-inch set that looks like one long sweeping screen. While many functions are operated through the screens, there are physical buttons for heating and audio settings around the center console. And the ambient lighting can glow as you adjust the temperature — blue or orange — which could impress passengers for a while.

The optional built-in navigation system also uses augmented reality to show what an intersection or traffic circle looks like before you get to it, and then project arrows to show which lane you should be in. It makes the case for not using maps with the standard smartphone connectivity.

Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

Technology that can frustrate. While very comprehensive, MBUX can overwhelm drivers trying to perform basic functions. There's a touchpad on the center console that is sensitive to hit menus on the screen and very sensitive touchpads on the steering wheel to operate both screens. On top of all that, the voice assistant can be as easily provoked as Amazon's Alexa or Apple's Siri, frustrating anyone trying to have a conversation.

Even the physical controls are scattered around, with heating controls up high and audio and phone controls low by the touchpad. Steering wheel controls also offer another route to get what you want, but all of the choices can complicate simple tasks.

It starts to show that Mercedes spent its money on tech rather than interior quality. Some of the plastics don't feel particularly special, especially when the GLA gets loaded with options and pushes well into luxury car prices.

Starts small, gets expensive. Starting from $37,450, the GLA 250 looks enticing among small luxury SUVs. Many desirable features are also included, such as power front seats, a power tailgate, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and keyless start. In the past, Mercedes-Benz would have probably charged extra for many of those features.

But all-wheel drive is a $2,000 option, and heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and leather upholstery are all individual options that together add upwards of $2,000. Adding keyless entry mandates a $1,850 Premium Package with larger screens and other features. Even a judiciously optioned GLA 250 nears $45,000 before adding many of the more interesting technology and styling upgrades.

The more expensive GLA 35 and GLA 45 are similarly afflicted. Even with more power and standard all-wheel drive, starting prices of around $50,000 and up can buy you larger SUVs or more powerful sedans. Mercedes nickels-and-dimes buyers for a sunroof, leather upholstery, heated seats, and keyless entry on these trims, too.

Final thoughts. Like many small luxury SUVs, the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is pricey and not the most practical for more than a pair of people and some cargo, or four people and not much cargo. It's surprisingly entertaining to drive, particularly the GLA 35 and GLA 45, and the GLA 250 is pretty efficient for a gasoline-only SUV. But the Mercedes' MBUX infotainment system looks as good as it is confounding to use in practice, and the interior quality isn't up to that of some competitors. What most undermines the GLA's case, however, is that there are more spacious vehicles in this class — Mercedes' own GLB-Class, for one — that have as or more well-rounded packages.
