Overview

What's New

The 2022 Porsche Macan receives styling updates to the front and rear fascias, updated LED headlights, standard Sport Design mirrors, and new wheel designs while the interior receives minor updates to the center console controls and the powertrain lineup has been enhanced and reshuffled to cover the vacancy left by the Turbo trim.

Choosing Your Porsche Macan

There are three trim levels for the 2022 Macan luxury SUV: the base, S, and GTS, and starting prices range from $56,250 to $81,250.

Engine Choices

The base 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder puts out more power this year with 261 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The 2.9-liter turbocharged V6 shifts from last year’s GTS to the S trim and it generates 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque while the GTS trim takes last year’s Turbo engine that puts out 434 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. All engines are mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and power is routed to all four wheels.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Macan seats five although it is not considered spacious for rear seat occupants or cargo. Its 186.1-inch length provides just 17.2 cubic feet of cargo space which expands to 53 cubic feet with the seatbacks folded.

The small crossover is rated to tow 4,409 pounds and can provide 8.9-inches of ground clearance when equipped with the optional air suspension.

Safety Features

The Macan is incredibly basic when it comes to active safety technology. Parking sensors, lane departure warnings, and rain-sensing wipers are standard while blind-spot monitoring and lane-keep assist are offered for $700 each, adaptive cruise control is $990, a surround-view camera is $1,200, and parking assist is available for $390.

Connectivity

The Macan is equipped with a 10.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and four USB-C charge ports. The S and GTS trims offer a 14-speaker 665-watt Bose sound system for $990 or a 16-speaker Burmester sound system for $5,700.

The entry-level Macan features adaptive LED headlights, LED taillights and light bar, 19-inch staggered width wheels, a power tailgate, power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors, proximity entry, fabric seat centers, eight-way power-adjustable seats with heating for the front, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shifter, a 4.8-inch driver information screen, gloss-black interior trim, and a three-zone climate control system.

The lengthy list of options will quickly raise the price of the Macan. The Premium Package is $2,240 and includes upgraded headlights, blind-spot detection, the upgraded Bose stereo, and heated front and rear seats while the Premium Package Plus can be ordered instead for $5,050 and additionally includes a panoramic sunroof and 14-way power-adjustable seats with ventilation.

2022 Porsche Macan S - MSRP From $66,750

Besides the engine upgrade, the S features 20-inch wheels, driver position memory - a power-adjustable steering wheel is unavailable due to the current chip shortage - and adaptive dampers. The option packages from the base Macan are also offered in the S.

2022 Porsche Macan GTS - MSRP From $81,250

The top-tier GTS trim features 21-inch wheels, enlarged front fascia air intakes, clear taillights, a Sport Exhaust system with gloss black quad outlets, air suspension with a 10mm lower ride height, Porsche Surface Coated Brakes with red calipers, brushed aluminum interior trim, and door sill guards, and GTS logos on the headrests, tachometer, and side garnishes.

Sports Car Engines. For a company like Porsche, which makes some of the most renowned sports cars on the market, the move to SUVs has been a surprisingly beneficial one financially. Despite coming out as an all-new vehicle in 2015, the Porsche Macan has quickly become the automaker’s best-selling vehicle. The reasoning behind Macan’s popularity is simple. The compact SUV delivers a similar performance to the brand’s sports cars but has a more versatile body style.

The Macan is available with a trio of powerful engines. The base powertrain, which includes a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, is a punchy motor. It produces 261 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque and helps the SUV get to 60 mph in a respectable six seconds. Compared to last year, this engine makes 13 more hp.

The mid-level Macan S features a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 engine that produces 375 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. For even more power, there’s the GTS trim, which comes with an upgraded version of the V6 for 434 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque. The Macan S can get to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and the GTS shaves 0.3 seconds off that time. If these engines sound familiar, it’s because they were in different trims last year. The 2022 Macan S gets the engine from last year’s GTS, while the GTS gets a transplant from the now-discontinued Turbo.

Can Feel High End. The Macan may be an SUV, but it feels and looks like a Porsche. That is to say, it has a sporty, yet conservative design on the outside and a premium look on the inside in higher trims. In the base trim, the Macan’s cabin feels drab. Move up to one of the higher trims or dive into Porsche's extensive list of optional features, and you’ll wind up with a high-end SUV – just don’t expect it to come cheap.

Some of the Macan’s optional features include 18-way sport seats, heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, wood and carbon fiber trim, a Burmester audio system, a heated steering wheel, and colored gauges. As one would expect, fit and finish for the Macan is excellent regardless of trim.

The standard infotainment system in the Macan includes a 10.9-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Bluetooth, 10 audio speakers, and four USB ports. Porsche’s infotainment system has sharp graphics, quick response times, and loads of physical buttons. Porsche doesn’t offer Android Auto compatibility, which is a little confusing.

Sublime Handling. Beyond engines, the Macan also delivers the best handling of any compact SUV on the market. Because of the Macan’s hunkered-down design, firm suspension, and accurate steering, the compact SUV feels like a sports car around corners. In the compact class, the Macan is the most enjoyable option to drive.

On the flip side, ride quality for the Macan depends on what trim and packages you go with. The base Macan has a plush ride that glides over bumps. The S comes with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) that still remains comfortable for the daily commute. With the Macan GTS, which comes with adaptive air suspension, and the available Sport package, the SUV’s ride is noticeably firmer than it is with other trims.

Cramped Cabin. Passengers in the front seat will have a different opinion on how comfortable the Macan is compared to passengers in the back. The SUV’s front seats are incredibly comfortable. They’re supportive, plush, and have plenty of space. The seats in the back are a different story. Rear passengers will feel the lack of legroom, while sitting three side by side is a squeeze. The majority of other SUVs have far roomier rear seats.

You’ll also find less cargo space in the Macan than in the majority of other compact SUVs. Behind the rear seats, the Macan offers up to 17.2 cubic feet of cargo space. Folding the rear seats down results in 52.9 cubic feet of total cargo space. These figures are well behind other options.

Final Thoughts. Instead of focusing on being a do-it-all SUV, the 2022 Porsche Macan is more interested in being the sportiest option in the segment. The Macan, like a true sports car, requires compromise. It has powerful engines and sharp handling but features small rear seats and a small cargo area. Porsche’s pricing that requires consumers to pay extra for nearly every option can see the compact SUV's price swell to ludicrous figures.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is the only SUV that offers nearly the same level of performance as the Macan. It’s available in a high-performance trim with 505 horsepower, has a gorgeous design, and offers visceral performance.

In the opposite, comfort-forward direction, there’s the Volvo XC60. It’s packed with advanced safety features, has incredibly plush seats, is available with efficient engines, and features a stylish look.
