Overview

What's New

RAM 2500 changes for 2022 include a new infotainment system on Big Horn trucks and above, revised packages for Power Wagon, and improved towing technology. This range remains complex to navigate, with innumerable combinations on offer, while prices have crept up over last year. The model continues to be the brand's entry-level heavy-duty truck below the RAM 3500.

Choosing Your RAM 2500

There’s a lot to think about when choosing a RAM 2500, starting with your preferred trim level. This affects the type of cabin you’re able to specify, with four options including Regular Cab, Crew Cab, and larger Mega Cab, with the added option of a 6.4-ft or eight-foot. box. All models bar the AWD-only Power Wagon can be ordered with either all or rear-wheel drive, while there’s also a choice of gas or diesel engines and two transmission options. Numerous packages are available on each model.

The range starts at $38,145 including destination for a Tradesman Regular Cab 4x2 with an eight-foot box, a 6.4-liter V8 engine, and an eight-speed automatic transmission. You could spend as much as $80,195 on a Limited Mega Cab with AWD, the Cummins turbodiesel engine, and a six-speed auto box.

Engine Choices

The standard Ram 2500 engine is a 6.4-liter V8 gas unit, producing 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque, while the 6.7-liter Cummins I6 turbodiesel pumps out 370 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque. RAM says that the 2500 can tow up to 20,000 lbs when properly equipped. The max tow rating for the larger RAM 3500 is 37,090 lbs.

Power from either engine can be fed to the rear or all four wheels, through a six-speed or eight-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy figures were unavailable at the time of writing.

Engine TypeHorsepowerTorque
6.4 V8410 hp429 lb-ft
6.7 turbodiesel370 hp850 lb-ft

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Regular Cab is a three-seater model, while Crew Cab models seat six and Mega Cab adds a few extra cubic feet of capacity. Box lengths range from 6.4 feet to eight feet, but you can’t get the smaller box with Regular Cab or the larger one with Mega Cab models.

Safety Features

Every Ram 2500 has a suite of electronic safety aids including roll mitigation, hill-start assist, trailer sway damping, and traction control. As you move up the range, additional features appear – Big Horn models receive electronic trailer brake control, Laramie has front and rear park assist, but only Limited receives blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection as standard. Safety features can be added to any trim as available packages.

Connectivity

The standard infotainment system is a modest five-inch touchscreen display married to a four-speaker audio system, with two USB ports, Bluetooth, and an audio jack. Big Horn and Power Wagon models receive more contemporary 8.4-inch touchscreens with smartphone integration and WiFi hotspot capabilities alongside an extra pair of speakers, while Laramie models receive a nine-speaker Alpine sound system with a subwoofer. Limited Longhorn gains GPS navigation and an HD radio, and Limited’s dash is filled by a 12-inch touchscreen.

RAM 2500

RAM 2500 Tradesman – MSRP From $38,145

Despite being utilitarian in nature, Tradesman models are still equipped with automatic lights, air conditioning, push-button start, and an alarm. However, everything else is manually adjustable, and the five-inch infotainment system lacks smartphone compatibility or WiFi.

The $360 Convenience Group pack is well worth adding, combining dual-zone climate and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a color display and tinted windshield glass. The Tradesman Level 1 Equipment Group adds remote keyless entry and power windows, heated outside mirrors, and upgraded door trims for $1,045. Meanwhile, the $2,890 Safety Group brings everything from lane keep assist and adaptive steering to rain-sensitive wipers and adaptive cruise control.

RAM 2500 Big Horn – MSRP From $42,265

Riding on larger 18-inch wheels, Big Horn models are the last 2500 available in Regular Cab guise, and the first available with a Mega Cab. A superior 8.4-inch touchscreen display underpins a six-speaker sound system, alongside smartphone capabilities and WiFi. The windows are powered, the 3.5-inch information display gains color, and there’s remote keyless entry.

The $2,620 Safety Group B pack adds the features from Tradesman alongside a leather-wrapped steering wheel and seven-inch color display cluster, while the $445 Heated Seats and Wheel Group introduces heating elements everywhere from the front seats to the leather-wrapped steering wheel with its audio controls.

RAM Power Wagon – MSRP From $57,855

Built for work rather than leisure, AWD-only Crew-Cab-exclusive Power Wagons receive acoustic front door glass and a sliding power rear window, plus powered, heated, and folding outside mirrors. The eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat gets two-way power lumbar, and a larger seven-inch display neighbors a perforated steering wheel. This is the first Ram to come with front and rear parking assistance or an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

The Safety Group costs $1,990 here, while three Power Wagon Equipment Groups are available. Level 3 is $9,545, bundling together over 40 upgrades including a 17-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, leather-trimmed bucket seats, and a 12-inch touchscreen with navigation.

RAM 2500 Laramie – MSRP From $53,815

From its polished aluminum wheels to its chrome exterior mirrors and extensive LED lighting, Laramie models are the first to deliver contemporary levels of vehicular comfort and luxury.

The front passenger seat gains eight-way power adjustment while the front seats are heated, and every occupant gets to enjoy a nine-speaker Alpine sound system. There’s dual-zone climate, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, power-adjustable pedals, and even a remote engine start system.

The Safety Group pack is now $1,670, available alongside two Laramie Group options packs. Level B costs $4,025 and includes 15 upgrades from ventilated front seats and power-adjustable pedals to a 17-speaker sound system and automatic headlamps.

RAM 2500 Limited Longhorn – MSRP From $61,385

Incremental improvements on Limited Longhorn models include automatic LED projector headlamps with high-beam control, ambient cabin lighting, and heated memory outside mirrors. Chrome garnishes the exterior, while the cabin receives rain-sensitive wipers, heated rear seats and ventilated front bucket seats, leather-wrapped grab handles, and real wood instrument panels. This is also the first 2500 to come with navigation or a remote tailgate release as standard.

The Longhorn Level 1 Equipment Group is our pick of the options. It costs $3,745 for blind-spot and cross-path detection systems, power-deployable running boards, a wireless charging pad, and a 12-inch navigation display alongside a Harman Kardon premium audio system.

RAM 2500 Limited – MSRP From $66,050

Limited models set their stall out with 20-inch satin-carbon and chrome wheels flanked by power deployable running boards. In the cab, leather bucket seats face onto a 12-inch touchscreen navigation system with HD radio and wireless device charging. Significantly, this is the first 2500 to come with blind-spot and cross-path detection systems as standard.

Even on Limited models, you have to pay $1,590 for the Safety Group bundle with adaptive cruise and steering, lane-keep assist, and forward-collision warnings. These features can also be acquired as part of the Limited Level 1 Equipment Group, alongside the Harman Kardon stereo, a surround-view camera system, and a cargo view camera.

CarsDirect Tip

With so many configurations to choose from, your choice of Ram 2500 will depend on the competing merits of value, comfort, and space. For our money, Laramie models represent the optimal balance, though the Safety Group package is an essential upgrade on any trim.
