Overview

What's New

A sixth trim has been added to Subaru’s evergreen Forester range for 2022 – the Wilderness model, designed for more serious off-road work. The whole range receives a redesigned fascia and front end, while Subaru’s latest EyeSight suite of driver assistance technologies also comes as standard.

Choosing Your Subaru Forester

The Forester range starts at $26,320 including destination for the standard model, with Premium costing $29,230. Sport will set you back $30,890; Limited and Wilderness are $33,000 and $33,945 respectively; you’ll pay $36,420 for a flagship Touring model.

Engine Choices

Every Forester is powered by the same 2.5-liter BOXER engine, generating 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. This is delivered to the road through a CVT transmission and symmetrical all-wheel drive, returning an EPA-estimated 26 miles per gallon city, 33 mpg highway, and 29 combined. The only exception to this is the rugged Wilderness model, whose economy drops to 25/28/26 MPG as a result of its modified suspension and all-terrain tires.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

Cargo capacity for the five-seater Forester stands at 31.1 cubic feet with the rear seats in place, and 76.1 once they’re dropped.

Subaru Forester

Safety Features

Every Forester receives seven airbags throughout its cabin, with symmetrical all-wheel drive and Subaru’s latest EyeSight driver assistance pack. Premium is the first trim to receive hill descent control, and you’ll need a Sport model to receive automatic emergency steering, which works with the standard pre-collision braking to avoid an accident at speeds of less than 50 mph. This is also the first trim benefiting from blind-spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert.

Connectivity

The default option on more affordable Foresters is a 6.5-inch multimedia touchscreen interface with full smartphone integration, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and a CD player. By the time you reach Limited trim, the screen increases to eight inches and offers dual rear USB ports and voice-activated climate control.

Touring provides gesture-control technology for the dual-zone climate, and this is the only Forester to come with navigation and an uprated stereo as standard.

Subaru Forester

Forester Base – MSRP From $26,320

The base Forester is equipped with power doors, windows, and side mirrors. Its 6.5-inch multimedia system includes dual USB ports and a color LCD combination meter, while remote keyless entry is standard alongside an LED dome light and cargo hooks.

There are no packs on this model.

Forester Premium – MSRP From $29,230

Buyers in colder states should note Premium is the first Forester to come with heated front seats, heated outside mirrors, and a de-icer mechanism in its windshield wipers. The driver’s seat gains 10-way power including lumbar, while roof rails flank a panoramic power moonroof that illuminates a cabin equipped with dark privacy glass, chrome handles, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

You can add blind-spot assistance and rear cross-traffic alerts to a powered rear tailgate on Premium models for $1,165.

Forester Sport – MSRP From $30,890

Riding on black 18-inch wheels with a matching roof spoiler, the orange-accented Sport receives a more advanced version of Premium’s X-MODE traction system. Its safety roster extends to blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency steering.

Subaru’s penchant for combining seemingly random options continues on Sport. For $1,645, reverse automatic braking joins an eight-inch infotainment screen, a Harman Kardon audio system, and a power rear tailgate.

Forester Limited – MSRP From $33,000

Limited models have 18-inch aluminum wheels finished in black, beneath body-color outside mirrors with integrated turn signals. You won’t spot the one-touch folding rear seatback or powered auto-closing tailgate at a glance, but you will notice the larger eight-inch multimedia system, dominating a cabin that also features perforated leather trim, voice-activated dual-zone climate, and rear USB ports.

Limited buyers may wish to spend $1,695 adding a heated steering wheel, a Harman Kardon audio system, and a larger eight-inch multimedia system with navigation.

Forester Wilderness – MSRP From $33,945

There are significant mechanical differences on Wilderness models, with longer coil springs and shock absorbers creating 9.2 inches of ground clearance. Embossed and exclusive all-terrain tires sit on matte-black 17-inch alloy wheels, with a full-size spare in the cargo bay. Wilderness models feature hexagonal fog lights and a matching front grille, skid plates, and more prominent wheel arch cladding, while the cabin has water-repellent StarTex seating.

The only option on Wilderness models is a $1,850 package combining an eight-inch infotainment screen with a Harman Kardon audio system, and a power rear tailgate.

Forester Touring – MSRP From $36,420

As well as the surprise-and-delight feature of gesture-controlled climate, Touring models receive dark gray machined 18-inch alloy wheels, satin outside mirror caps, and LED fog lights. Perforated leather seats come in two exclusive colors and the driver’s 10-way power settings include two-position memory. The front passenger seat has eight-way power, and rear seat occupants benefit from outboard heating. Navigation is also standard, along with a Harman Kardon stereo and a heated steering wheel.

CarsDirect Tip

Subaru has cleverly ensured different Foresters will appeal to different audiences. If you live for the outdoors, Wilderness’s beefier suspension is hard to look past, while Limited ups the luxury quota to a degree that makes Touring seem superfluous. For our money, a Sport with the $1,645 media and automation package delivers the best blend of safety, comfort, and value.

Great all-around crossover for buyers. Subaru is never one to knock people’s socks off with design and tech. What it is known for is selling great all-around crossovers at strong prices. The 2022 Subaru Forester is no exception to this trend.

With great ground clearance, a legendary standard all-wheel-drive system, a great suite of standard features, and more, the 2022 Forester seems like a great pick for any family. Find out how it stacks up against the competition below.

Great value, but standard touchscreen needs work. The base 2022 Subaru Forester rings in at just $26,320 (destination fees included), but it comes with a slew of standard goodies. These include all-wheel drive, automatic climate control, 17-inch wheels, cloth upholstery, adaptive LED headlights, and a split-folding rear seat, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and more.

For reference, the Ford Escape rings in at $26,800 and only comes standard with a 4.2-inch non-touch display screen, not smartphone integration, and front-wheel drive. The Honda CR-V starts at $26,975 and includes a five-inch non-touchscreen display and front-wheel drive. And this trend continues, showing just how great a value the 2022 Forester is.

While that 6.5-inch touchscreen is nice, it is small compared to other standard touchscreens. Plus, to move into the more competitive eight-inch touchscreen, you must jump into the $36,420 Touring trim.

Subaru Forester

Unique capability but limited on power. The 2022 Subaru Forester has impressive capabilities, with its 8.7 inches of ground clearance (extra half-inch in the Wilderness model), time-tested AWD system, and off-road-ready suspension combined with its exceptional on-road manners.

But all this capability is backed by an underwhelming 182-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable transmission. While only the Ford Bronco Sport can beat the Forester in capability, many competitors offer far more power, including the 190-hp CR-V, 250-hp Escape, and 203-hp Toyota RAV4.

Outstanding Wilderness model, but its proportions are odd. The 2022 Subaru Forester added a new, more-rugged Wilderness model. This includes an extra half-inch of ground clearance, revised shocks and springs, all-terrain tires, a wider-ratio CVT, washable seatbacks, and more. It is a legit off-roader that also feels at home in an IKEA parking lot.

However, with its higher ride height come some proportion issues. There is a massive gap between the top of the tires and the bottom of the wheel well, making it look like it’s walking on stilts. Not a good look.

Final thoughts. The 2022 Forester is never going to offer that wow factor some other vehicles do. However, as a complete package, it is about as good as a crossover can get for the money. It’s got great off-road capability, good on-road manners, plus it’s a great value.

The Forester lacks power, so buyers who put this high on their list may prefer the optional 250-hp four-cylinder Ford Escape. Buyers who find the Forester lacks in off-road prowess may find the Ford Bronco Sport a better option.
