Overview

What's New

The 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid brings added power and efficiency to the all-new Tundra line. Like the gas version, the Tundra Hybrid features big-rig styling, a stronger and lighter chassis, and vastly improved interior refinement. New features include a fully adaptive suspension system, digital instrumentation, and a 14-inch center touchscreen.

Choosing Your Toyota Tundra

The 2022 Tundra Hybrid comes in five trim levels: Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, TRD Pro, and Capstone. Pricing starts at $53,995 including destination and tops out at $75,225 for the Capstone.

Engine Choices

The 2022 Tundra's hybrid powerplant, dubbed i-FORCE MAX, combines a twin-turbo 3.5-liter gas V6 with an electric motor. Total output is 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission does the shifting. The Tundra Hybrid can tow up to 11,450 pounds.

According to EPA fuel economy estimates, the Tundra Hybrid delivers 20 miles per gallon city, 24 mpg highway, and 22 combined.

Four-wheel drive costs $3,000 on the Limited and Platinum and comes standard on the TRD Pro and Capstone.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The 2022 Tundra Hybrid comes in four-door CrewMax configuration only, so there's plenty of room for five adults. The standard bed measures 5.5 feet. A 6.5-foot bed is available on the Limited and 1794 for $330. The Tundra Hybrid has a payload capacity of 1,685 pounds.

Safety Features

The 2022 Tundra Hybrid spares nothing when it comes to driver assistance technology. Every model comes with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, evasive steering assist, automatic high beams, road sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, tailer merge warning, front and rear parking sensors, and forward and reverse automatic emergency braking.

Surround-view cameras are available on the Limited for $950 and standard on subsequent trims. A head-up display is included in the $1,645 Advanced Package for the Platinum and 1794. The display is standard on the TRD Pro and Capstone.

Connectivity

The 2022 Tundra Hybrid's infotainment system offers a 14-inch touchscreen, nine speakers, four USB ports, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Limited can be equipped with a 12-speaker JBL sound system ($565) and wireless device charging, which is included in the $385 Power Package. These items are standard on subsequent trims, along with navigation.

2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid Limited — MSRP From $53,995

The Limited offers a SofTex leatherette interior with heated and ventilated eight-way power front seats, driver memory settings, automatic dual-zone climate control, and leather-wrapped steering wheel. The exterior receives LED fog lights and taillights, chrome trim, power-folding side mirrors, and 20-inch alloy wheels.

Other features include proximity keyless access, remote start, and a tailgate release bump switch. A heated steering wheel can be added for $150, and a panoramic sunroof costs $1,350.

In addition to wireless charging, the Power Package furnishes LED bed lights and a household-style power outlet in the rear cabin and bed. These features can be bundled with an auto-leveling rear air suspension for $1,035.

The TRD Off-Road Package ($2,115) includes an off-road suspension, underbody skid plates, all-terrain wheels and tires, mudguards, and TRD trim throughout.

2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid Platinum — MSRP From $62,085

Besides the head-up display, the Advanced Package adds a fully adaptive suspension. Power running boards are available for $1,350. The TRD Off-Road Package drops off the options list.

2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid 1794 Edition — MSRP From $62,785

The 1794 Edition follows a vaguely Western design theme that includes rich cream or saddle brown upholstery, American walnut interior trim, chromed bodyside trim and mirror caps, and 20-inch machined-finish wheels. Equipment and options are shared with the Platinum.

2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid TRD Pro — MSRP From $68,500

The TRD Pro carries serious off-road hardware, including an exclusive off-road suspension with a 1.1-inch front lift and FOX shocks, an electronically locking rear differential, a terrain selector, and crawl control. The exterior wears gloss black trim, matte black 18-inch forged aluminum wheels, and an LED lightbar in the grille. In terms of comfort and convenience, the TRD Pro is equipped like the Limited.

2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid Capstone — MSRP From $75,225

The luxurious Capstone features a black and white semi-aniline leather interior with American walnut trim and 22-inch dark chrome wheels. The power running boards, head-up display, and 4WD are standard. Only the adaptive suspension remains optional, priced at $1,045.

Finally Modern. The second-gen Toyota Tundra was one of the oldest vehicles in the class, spanning from 2007 to 2021 without any major changes. Mercifully, Toyota has finally come out with an all-new Tundra for 2022 and it’s available with a hybrid powertrain.

The all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid arrives to take on the Ford F-150 Hybrid, as well as efficient diesel options offered on the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and Ram 1500. With the new hybrid powertrain, few will miss the old Tundra’s V8 engine, which has disappeared for 2022.

Beyond the engine, the new Tundra Hybrid features a rugged design that makes it look unlike any other hybrid on the market and intuitive high-tech features. It’s been a long wait, but the Tundra Hybrid finally ushers the pickup truck into the modern era.

A Hybrid Built For Go. We should make something very clear, Toyota didn’t set out to make the Tundra Hybrid the most fuel-efficient pickup truck on the market. That fact is evident from the Tundra Hybrid’s power figures. While the standard twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine is good for 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, the Tundra Hybrid adds an electric motor and a 1.87-kWh battery for up to 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque.

In addition to having more power, the hybrid’s powertrain has been tweaked to produce peak torque at 2,400 rpm, giving the Tundra Hybrid an edge when towing or off-roading. Additionally, the electric motor helps the Tundra Hybrid have a quiet ride when operating in EV mode, feel peppier in tow/haul mode, and reduce the amount of stress the V6 engine is under.

So-So Towing Capability. While towing capacity for the Tundra has increased for the 2022 model year, the hybrid isn’t as capable as the regular gas model. The Tundra has a maximum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds and can haul up to 1,940 pounds. The Tundra Hybrid has even lower figures of 11,450 pounds of towing capacity and 1,680 pounds of payload capacity. That’s plenty for most people and well above the previous-gen model, but it falls behind the F-150 Hybrid that has a 12,700-pound towing capacity.

Unlike other hybrids on the market, the Tundra Hybrid doesn’t bring significantly better fuel economy figures over the regular model. The Tundra Hybrid is rated to get up to 20 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive. Four-wheel-drive models fall to 21 mpg combined. The regular Tundra can get up to 20 mpg combined with RWD, while the F-150 Hybrid can get up to 25 mpg combined.

If you’re looking to save money on fuel with the Tundra Hybrid, you’ll want to look elsewhere. Toyota clearly had a goal in mind to make the Tundra Hybrid better suited at the performance side of things compared to fuel economy, bringing mixed results.

Toyota Tundra Hybrid

Pricey, But Worth It. Toyota offers the Tundra Hybrid on the Limited, Platinum, 1794, TRD Pro, and Capstone trims. The TRD Pro and Capstone trims are only available with the hybrid powertrain. Compared to similarly equipped Tundras, the Tundra Hybrid costs an additional $3,400.

With the Tundra Hybrid starting off with the Limited trim, the model comes well-equipped with a 14-inch touchscreen, synthetic leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a power sliding rear window.

On the safety front, the Tundra Hybrid comes standard with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, traffic sign recognition, and pedestrian detection.

While the Tundra Hybrid still has a little way to go to catch up to the fanciest F-150 and Ram 1500 models, the available Capstone trim feels like a premium product with a 10-inch head-up display, 22-inch wheels, power running boards, semi-aniline leather upholstery, available adaptive suspension, and walnut wood trim.

Final Thoughts. The 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid is the pickup truck to get in the lineup. Its hybrid powertrain brings a hefty increase in power, a slight increase in fuel economy, and a quieter ride. Unfortunately, the hybrid engine can’t match the regular Tundra or its competitors when it comes to towing or payload capacity.

The Ford F-150 Hybrid is the Tundra Hybrid’s most obvious competitor. The F-150 has a higher towing capacity, a more upscale interior in its range-topping trim, better fuel economy figures, and a Pro Power Onboard system that can pump out 2,400 watts of electricity.

The Ram 1500 is available with mild-hybrid powertrains, can tow up to 12,750 pounds, is available in a high-performance TRX trim with 702 hp, and has one of the nicest cabins in the class in its range-topping trim.
