Overview

What's New

The 2023 Audi A3 family is off of a fresh redesign and sees only minor changes to its standard and optional package contents. Full LED headlights and upgraded door materials are now included and adaptive cruise control and a wireless charger are offered on the base trim.

Choosing Your Audi A3

Audi’s entry offering is offered in three sporty flavors, the A3, S3, and RS 3. The A3 is offered in Premium 40 and Premium Plus 40, while the S3 is additionally offered in Prestige trim. Prices for the A3 and S3 range from $35,995 to $53,895. The RS 3 is offered on one trim and is priced at $59,995.

While the A3 is similar to the 2022 model, dealer inventories are currently low and it may be easier to order a 2023 model instead.

Engine Choices

There are three engines offered across the lineup that accompany each of the models while they are all equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with paddle shifters. The A3 features a mild-hybrid system that helps provide better off-the-line acceleration and enables engine-off coasting.

ModelEnginePowerDrivetrainOverall Fuel Economy
A3Turbo 2.0-liter four-cyl mild hybrid201 hp / 221 lb-ftFWD32 mpg (AWD gets 30)
S3Turbo 2.0-liter four-cyl306 hp / 295 lb-ftAWD26 mpg
RS 3Turbo 2.5-liter five-cyl401 hp / 369 lb-ftAWD with torque-vectoring, drift mode23 mpg

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The A3 seats five and is 176.9 inches long which is a touch longer than the Audi Q3 but a couple of inches shy of the BMW 2-Series and soon-to-be-discontinued Mercedes A-Class. Its back seat offers 35.5 inches of legroom and 36.6 inches of headroom which isn’t very spacious but typical for this class as is its 10.9 cubic feet of trunk space.

Safety Features

The A3 features a basic level of active safety equipment. Automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams are standard while adaptive cruise control is available through a Features on Demand one-time purchase program and blind-spot alert with rear cross-traffic detection and park assist are included in the Convenience Package. Those features are standard on the Premium Plus trim. The Technology Package of the Premium Plus trim adds traffic sign recognition.

Connectivity

The A3 includes a 10.1-inch infotainment display that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. SiriusXM and a wireless charging pad are found within the Convenience Package and a Bang & Olufsen sound system is offered in the A3’s Premium Plus trim’s Technology Package.

Other upgrades include premium LED headlights with darkened housings and unique checkered-flag lighting patterns, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster with unique performance data displays, a shift-indicator light, a sport leather steering wheel with polished die-cast paddles, and an RS-specific drive mode button.

The RS Technology Package is $2,750 and includes the features of the S3’s Technology package as well as a head-up display. The RS Design Package adds unique suede-like inserts into the seat shoulders, color accents on the seat belts, a high-gloss black center console trim, and colored air vent bars for $1,500.

For the ultimate performance, the Dynamic Plus Package ($5,500) can be ordered with its ceramic front brakes, upgraded rear steel brakes, and an increased top speed (180 mph), while a carbon-fiber engine will impress the show car crowd.

Luxury Tech Features. The 2023 Audi A3 and S3 are the smallest and most affordable models in the German automaker’s lineup, but no one would get that impression from the sedans’ list of tech features. The A3 is a little tech powerhouse, featuring tech features that would put some larger and much more expensive vehicles to shame.

Every A3 comes with a 10.1-inch touchscreen and a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster that have crisp graphics and simple controls. Other standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and satellite radio. Audi offers its excellent and highly configurable Virtual Cockpit system that includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as optional.

While the A3’s list of tech features would impress anyone, the sedan also comes with niceties that include leather upholstery, tri-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, LED headlights, and 17-inch wheels as standard. The A3’s starting price tag of $35,995 (with destination) may be high for the subcompact class, but Audi makes sure that you get your money’s worth.

Fun In A Small Package. Both the A3 and S3 offer lithe, playful handling. Consumers seeking extra performance will naturally gravitate toward the S3, though there’s plenty to like with the base A3.

Audi offers the A3 with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The engine produces 201 horsepower and routes it to the front wheels as standard with all-wheel drive being available as an option. The base engine delivers perky performance, while the A3’s handling is playful. We doubt most people will take their A3 to a windy road, which is a shame because it’s enjoyable to toss around. The A3 also gets impressive fuel economy with a combined rating of 32 mpg.

The more powerful S3 is equipped with a tuned version of the engine without the mild-hybrid system for 306 hp. The S3 also comes with a snappy seven-speed automatic transmission and AWD, making it feel quick in a straight line and grippy around corners. The issue with the S3 is that the engine has a fair amount of turbo lag off the line and the heavy steering lacks feedback.

Audi A3

Confidently Audi Styling. Audi may not have the same standout design elements as BMW or the knee-buckling design as Mercedes-Benz, but the A3 has a sharp, confident design. The angular headlights, sharp lines on the front fascia, and wide grille give the A3 a confident look. At the back, the A3 features triangular taillights, dual exhaust outlets, a modest spoiler, and clean lines.

The A3 lacks the same wow factor as the BMW 2-Series, the high-end look as the Mercedes-Benz CLA, or the overly sporty stance as the Acura Integra. But the small sedan manages to balance the line between being sporty and upscale.

Small Size, Small Interior. With a body that measures 177 inches long, there’s not a lot of space for the A3 to work with. While the A3 has comfortable seats and a premium cabin, the rear seats aren’t exactly spacious, as they offer 35.2 inches of legroom and 36.6 inches of headroom. The A3 is roomier than most of its competitors, but that’s not saying much, as it’s still not that comfortable in the back.

Cargo space in the A3 is also in short supply, as the sedan only has 10.9 cubic feet of cargo space. That’s not as big as other subcompact cars in the segment. The rear seats fold flat to open up the space a little more, but Costco runs may prove to be a little difficult.

Final Thoughts. The Audi A3 and S3 are sporty, tech-forward, stylish, and peppy sedans that act as a great entry point into the luxury brand’s cars. The sedans may not have the standout qualities of some rivals, but they are well-rounded options that are enjoyable to drive, efficient, and fairly comfortable.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA has a stylish fastback design, a generous list of standard features, a high-end interior, and optional high-performance engines. The BMW 2-Series is available in multiple body styles, has enjoyable handling, has a radical design, and is available with punchy engines.
