Overview

What's New

The 2023 Audi A4 model sees few notable changes. Adaptive cruise control is now available on all trims, the Black Optic packages are enhanced with more painted trim pieces and larger wheels, and an upgraded stereo is now standard on the Premium Plus trim.

Choosing Your Audi A4

Audi offers the 2023 A4 sedan, the A4 allroad wagon, and the S4 sport-sedan in Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige trims. Starting Prices range from $40,995 to $61,795.

Inventory on the 2022 model is low which may make ordering a 2023 the easiest option.

Engine Choices

There are three different powertrains offered across the 2023 A4 lineup. All are standard with all-wheel drive and automatic transmissions with paddle shifters. The A4 and A4 allroad are fitted with a seven-speed dual-clutch unit whereas the S4 features an eight-speed with a torque converter. The 45 TFSI powertrain is available for $2,100 to $700 depending on the A4’s selected trim.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The A4 and S4 sedans and allroad wagon seat five and stretch to 187.5 inches in length which nearly matches the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes C-Class. Rear passengers are afforded 35.7 inches of legroom and 37.4 inches of headroom which are on par with the rest of the class, as is its 12-cubic foot trunk space. Only Volvo offers a wagon body style to compete with the allroad, however, the Audi’s 24.2 cubic feet of space behind the seats (58.5 cubic feet with the seats folded) are far more than what is offered in the V60.

Conservative styling. If you want to stand out, the Audi A4 probably isn’t the car for you. The fifth-generation A4 has been on sale since the 2016 model year, and although it’s aged well, it’s not nearly as flashy as its compact executive rivals. We still think it’s a good looking car, but it might not be your cup of tea if you’re in the market for something more expressive.

Saving the wagons. The A4 is the only car in this segment (and one of the few in general) that’s offered as a station wagon in the US. We don’t get the Avant that’s available in some markets, but we do get the A4 allroad. The allroad features a lift, unpainted fenders and bumpers, and an impressive 60 cubic feet of cargo room with the rear seats folded.

RS4 remains absent. Audi isn’t offering us a high-performance version of the A4. If you want to compete with a BMW M3 or Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG you’ll have to upgrade to an RS5, which is only offered as a coupe or a four-door liftback (or Sportback in Audispeak).

Polished driving dynamics. The A4 strikes a brilliant balance between performance and comfort across all trims. The steering is tight and responsive through aggressive cornering but mellows out under regular driving conditions, while still providing strong feedback. The suspension is hard enough to be tossable through the bends but does so without compromising ride quality.

Punchy powertrains. Even though there’s no RS4 to be found, the rest of the A4 lineup is far from lethargic. The base 40 model is powered by a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder with a 12-volt hybrid system, developing 201 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. That’s not a lot per se, but the A4 still feels plenty quick in its base form.

That being said, we would recommend upgrading to the 45 trim for $1,600. It’s powered by the same four-cylinder mild-hybrid, but Audi coerces 60 more horses (and 37 more lb-ft) out of it. The result is a car that’s properly quick; the A4 45 will get you to 60 in just 4.8 seconds. Some credit there is due for the quick-shifting seven-speed automatic transmission. It handles hard acceleration wonderfully, but we did notice a couple of instances of low-speed clunkiness.

The range-topping S4 is powered by a 2.9L turbocharged V6 that churns out 349 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque and is paired to an eight-speed automatic. The S4 builds on the A4’s already impressive chassis by adding adaptive dampers and an optional sport-tuned rear differential.

Although it’s certainly an athletic car, the S4 can’t quite match the performance of the BMW M340i or Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG on paper, nor does it offer as thrilling of an experience to drive. We’d probably stick to the A4 45.

Audi A4

Well-thought-out interior. Sensible yet aesthetically pleasing interiors are Audi’s bread and butter. Keeping the theme of the A4’s exterior, the cabin is stylish yet restrained. Everything is where it ought to be, and is constructed from premium materials. Our only gripe is a lack of interior storage areas, which don’t do much to further accommodate the passable 13 cubic feet of trunk storage.

On the connectivity front, the A4 comes with a standard 10.1” touchscreen that is both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capable. Optional extras include a Wi-Fi hotspot, navigation, and satellite radio. An option we’d tick is the Audi Virtual Cockpit digital gauge cluster, which on top of being highly configurable, is quite impressive to look at.

Standout safety. The A4 earned five-star ratings from the NHTSA and received near-perfect marks from the IIHS. Standard safety tech includes automatic emergency braking, automatic hi-beams, and a lane departure warning system.

It is worth noting that Audi limited some standard safety features to the higher-trim models. You’ll have to shell out for the unfortunately-named Convenience package to get adaptive cruise control on a base Premium. The top-of-the-line Prestige trim earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick thanks to its snazzy LED projector headlights as well.

Final thoughts. The 2023 Audi A4 is not the flashiest compact executive sedan to look at, nor is it the flashiest to drive. It may not be the most exciting choice compared to its competition, but it’s still a rational one. It’s both comfortable and engaging to drive in its base form, and it really comes alive with the 45 trim.

The S4 can’t quite keep up with some of its rivals, and we’re longing for an RS4, but the A4 45 is a great little sports sedan in its own right. The allroad wagon shares the 45’s powertrain and is a nifty buy if you’re looking for a little more space or capability.
