The 2023 BMW 4-Series adds a new high-performance trim, the M4 CSL, that is limited in production to 1,000 units. Otherwise, the 4-Series carries into the new year mostly unchanged albeit with some restrictions on available packages due to parts shortages.
Choosing Your BMW 4-Series
The 2023 BMW 4-Series is available in four trims: 430, M440, M4, and M4 CSL. Base prices for the coupe range from $48,395 to $140,895. The Convertible ranges from $56,495 to $90,695 and the Gran Coupe (not available as an M4) ranges from $46,895 to $58,445.
Engine Choices
The 4-Series is available with several powertrains most of which are a carryover from last year with the exception of the M4 CSL which utilizes the same engine but increases turbo boost, cooling performance, and updated software.
Of note, the M4 features a six-speed manual transmission. All trims send power to the rear wheels while all-wheel drive is offered on the 430i and M440i for $2,000 and the M4 for $4,100 which includes additional settings, including a rear-wheel-drive mode.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity
The 2023 BMW 4-Series coupe and convertible can fit four passengers and the five-door
Gran Coupe offers room for five passengers. All models are about 188 inches long. The coupe can fit 12 cubic feet worth of stuff in the truck which either shrinks in the convertible to make room for the folding soft top (nine cubic feet) or grows to 16.6 cubic feet with the hatchback, or even 45.6 cubic feet with the seats folded.
Safety Features
The 4-Series is equipped with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot detection, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and front and rear parking sensors.
The M440i offers the Driving Assistance Professional Package for $1,700 that adds adaptive cruise control with lane centering and lane change assist, and cross-traffic automatic braking. The Parking Assistance Package adds a surround-view camera with 3D viewing and allows for active parking for $700. The 4-Series has not been tested by NHTSA or IIHS.
Connectivity
The 2023 BMW 4-Series is one of the few refreshed BMWs to not receive the updated infotainment system and large curved screen as it retains an 8.8-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM are standard while the Premium Package adds a 10.25-inch screen.
Sound is produced through a 10-speaker 205-watt sound system or a Harman Kardon 16-speaker sound system for $875 (standard on the M4). Wireless charging and a Wi-Fi Hotspot are offered for $500.
2023 BMW 430i - MSRP From $48,395
The base trim features LED headlights and taillights, power-folding auto-dimming and heated mirrors, synthetic leather seats, wood trim, ambient lighting, and dual-zone climate control. The $400 Convenience Package adds proximity entry while the $1,400 Premium Package further includes a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. Ventilated seats are $500 and require perforated leather seat surfaces ($1,500). On the convertible, a $650 neck warmer vent is offered.
The M Sport Package ranges between $2,950 and $3,600 depending on body style and features unique exterior front and rear fascia, gloss black exterior trim, a rear spoiler, an M sport suspension with 19-inch wheels, aluminum interior trim, sport seats, and an M Sport steering wheel.
The $2,100 Dynamic Handling Package requires the M Sport design and adds an M Sport rear differential, M Sport brakes, and dynamic dampers with rear air suspension.
The Shadowline Package ($900) also piggybacks on the M Sport design and includes updated headlights with black inner housings, black mirror caps, and extended gloss black exterior trim.
The convertible starts at $56,495 while the Gran Coupe is actually the lowest priced of the trio, starting at $46,895.
2023 BMW M440i - MSRP From $59,245
The M440i receives the M Sport design package and hardware updates such as an M sport suspension, M Sport differential, M Sport brakes with blue calipers, and variable sport steering.
The Premium Package additionally includes a head-up display and is correspondingly more expensive ($1,800) and the Cooling and High Performance Tire Package adds adaptive dampers, increased cooling capacity, and 19-inch wheels wrapped in performance rubber for $2,400. As a celebration of 50 years of M performance, a BMW M 50 Years Emblem package is available for $200.
The convertible begins at $67,245 and the Gran Coupe is $58,445.
2023 BMW M4 - MSRP From $79,595
The M4 receives significant upgrades for the sake of improved performance. Adaptive M suspension, lightweight suspension components, 18 and 19-inch staggered wheels, M compound performance brakes, a sport exhaust with quad chrome plated outlets, M-developed steering, a carbon fiber roof panel, and M Drive modes help to transform the M4 into a serious performance car.
Leather M sport seats feature an integrated backlit M logo while full leather seats are available for $2,550. The Executive Package adds a head-up display, a power trunk lid, and a heated steering wheel for $1,300. Noteworthy individual options include adaptive LED headlights with laser light technology ($1,000), M carbon bucket seats ($4,500), M Drive Professional which adds an M Track mode, M Drift analyzer, and 10 levels of traction control for $900, and M Carbon Ceramic Brakes for $8,500.
The Competition trim coupe is priced at $83,695 and $90,695 for the convertible and features 19 and 20-inch wheels, extended Shadowline trim with black exhaust tips, and M seat belts.
2023 BMW M4 CSL - MSRP From $140,895
The ultra-high performance limited-edition M4 CSL features a lower suspension with unique tuning, revised front and rear fascia, a carbon-fiber hood, front splitter, rear diffuser, and trunk lid with an integrated ducktail-type spoiler, unique front and rear tail light designs, carbon ceramic brakes, lightweight wheels, a microfiber steering wheel, carbon- fiber bucket seats, and contrast stitching.
