Overview

What's New

An entirely new model debuts for 2023 in BMW’s iX electric SAV – the high-performance M60 EV. It costs over $100,000, but few other production vehicles offer comparable acceleration, while the cabin is also unique.

Choosing Your BMW iX

As the only trim so far confirmed for the 2023 model year, the iX M60 luxury electric SUV comes in a single flavor. It costs $105,920 including destination, with only two options packages complicating the buying process.

When the BMW iX first went on sale for the 2022 model year, it was available at a lower price of $84,195 in the form of the xDrive50. It's unclear if this cheaper iX trim will continue to be sold for 2023, as of this writing.

The 2023 BMW iX is eligible for a federal EV tax credit as well as applicable state plug-in rebates and incentives.

Engine Choices

The M60 is powered by twin electric motors, generating a combined 610 brake horsepower and 811 lb-ft of torque at maximum output. This prodigious power is split 65-35 towards the rear wheels, with a single-speed transmission.

Fuel economy has yet to be calculated, but BMW reports a maximum range of 280 miles in optimal conditions. Buyers get two years of free charging from Electrify America's DC fast-charging network, and BMW's Flexible Fast Charger cable will fully replenish a flat battery in 12 hours from any 120V or 240V socket.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

Cargo capacity for the five-seater iX M stands at 35.5 cu ft with the rear seats in place, and 77.9 cu ft once they’re dropped.

Safety Features

With a mechanical setup unlike any internal combustion engine vehicle, it’s unsurprising that the iX M’s safety roster is also quite distinct. It incorporates an actuator-based traction control system, active steering, M-calibrated axle-specific air suspension with automatic level control and manual height adjustment, and Launch Control for perfect take-offs.

Other standard safety aids include dynamic cruise control, park distance control, BMW’s Parking Assistant Plus pack and an acoustic warning system for pedestrians who otherwise might not hear the car approaching.

Connectivity

A suite of BMW-connected services is fitted to the iX M as standard, including BMW Assist and TeleServices, with speech and gesture recognition handling many of the controls.

The 14.9-inch touchscreen which fills the dash incorporates navigation, a 3D surround view system, and controls for the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround-sound audio system. Wireless device charging and smartphone mirroring are standard, an interior camera lets you monitor passenger activity, and satellite radio is fitted as standard.

2023 BMW iX M60 – MSRP From $105,920

As you’d expect from a BMW M car, the M60’s exterior bristles with purpose. The wheel arches are filled with 21-inch bi-color wheels, behind which M Sport brakes feature blue calipers. Adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams further distinguish this model.

Internally, the M60 offers plentiful reminders that you’re not sitting in a conventional vehicle. For example, there are heating elements in the door panels, dashboard, steering wheel, and armrests, collectively cocooning occupants in warmth. This is allied to active seat ventilation for front occupants, four-zone climate, and heated seats throughout. Other notable specifications include ambient cabin lighting including a panoramic LED roof, a power tailgate and keyless entry, privacy glass, and an anthracite headliner.

There are two main options packs on the M60. The $1,900 Driving Assistance Professional Package includes partial automation for parking maneuvers and part-automated driving including steering and lane change assistance. The $1,150 Luxury Package introduces backlit crystal glass and open-pore walnut materials across the center console, alongside soft-close automatic doors.

CarsDirect Tip

With only one trim level and mechanical configuration to choose from, it’s easy to select your M60. For our money, the Driving Assistance and Luxury packs don’t deliver enough of either to justify adding them as extras.

Incredible Performance. BMW’s jumping feet first into an all-electric future. The 2023 iX may be an all-electric midsize SUV, but it still adheres to everything consumers have come to love from the German brand. Gut-wrenching acceleration and agile handling make the iX one of the sportier electric SUVs in the class. For 2023, BMW has added a high-performance M60 model to the lineup, raising the iX’s performance.

The base iX xDrive50 comes with two electric motors, all-wheel drive (AWD), and a 111.5-kWh battery pack. In this configuration, the SUV produces 516 horsepower and 564 pound-feet of torque. Even the base model delivers punchy acceleration with a zero-to-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds. For the few that require extra performance from their electric SUV, there’s the new M60. It manages to squeeze 610 hp and 811 lb-ft of torque from the same setup. Performance from the iX M60 trim is absolutely staggering, as it can get to 60 mph from a standstill in 3.6 seconds.

While the iX delivers astonishing performance, it’s also a usable option with a decent amount of range. With 20-inch wheels, the iX xDrive50 can travel up to 324 miles on a single charge. The performance-oriented iX M60 can travel up to 288 miles with 21-inch wheels. The M60 gets a massive decrease in range for the extra performance that it brings, overall, the iX has a competitive amount of range for the class.

Stunning, Spacious Cabin. While one would expect an $85,000 BMW to have an upscale cabin with premium materials, the thing that's really surprising about the iX is just how spacious it is.

The iX is similarly sized to BMW’s midsize X5, making it a roomy SUV for up to five people and a vehicle that can reasonably act as an upscale family car. Both rows offer a generous amount of space, while the seats themselves are incredibly roomy. Passengers will find the iX’s seats to be well-cushioned and supportive, regardless of whether they’re sitting in the first or second row. Thanks to the way the iX’s electric platform is integrated into the body, the flat floor results in plenty of headroom and legroom, while the large windows and tall design result in an airy cabin.

For consumers that plan on using the iX as a family vehicle, the SUV has an impressive amount of cargo space. There’s 35.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in place and 77.9 cubic feet of total cargo space with the rear seats folded. These figures make the iX more spacious than the gas-powered X5 that has a total of 72.3 cubic feet of cargo space.

The iX comes well-equipped from the get-go with features like heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof with electrochromic shading, ambient interior lighting, synthetic leather upholstery, and quad-zone automatic climate control. The SUV’s list of options is extensive and includes premium features like massaging front seats, an interior camera, soft-close doors, leather upholstery, ventilated seats, and heated everything. The over-the-top features include glass controls and walnut veneers on the console.

BMW iX

Tons of Tech. BMW packs the iX with cutting-edge tech features that are astounding. The electric SUV comes with a 14.9-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that are integrated into a single curved display that spans nearly the full width of the dashboard. It’s a stunning display, with crisp graphics, loads of customization, and simple menus.

On top of the stunning displays, the iX also comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, 12 audio speakers, and six USB ports. Buyers can take things a step further with a 30-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, gesture control for the infotainment system, a head-up display, a drive recorder, augmented reliability navigation, and adjustable drive sound modes.

BMW offers the iX with a comprehensive set of standard safety features through its Active Driving Assistant, but it goes above and beyond with its list of available features. The electric SUV can be optioned with automatic park assist and a surround-view camera with a 3D view. The M60 is available with BMW’s Active Driving Assistant Pro system which acts as a semi-autonomous system.

Eye-Catching Look. The iX has a polarizing design. You’re either going to like the way the SUV looks or hate it; few people will find themselves to be in the middle. The front end is the most divisive part of the SUV, as BMW’s kidney grilles are enormous and run from the bottom of the hood to the top of the front bumper. The relatively slim headlights accent the grille’s size. At the back, the rear end of the SUV has thin taillights, a large rear spoiler, and prominent body lines on the rear bumper.

Will the iX go down as one of the prettiest vehicles ever made? Probably not, but it certainly makes a statement and will draw attention. Plus, most owners will be more concerned with the SUV’s interior design, which is far more appealing than the exterior. The cabin has a futuristic design with minimal controls, a dashboard with a steep angle, and unique color schemes.

BMW tried something new with the iX. Whether it works or not is up for debate, but the iX certainly doesn’t look like anything else on the market.

Final Thoughts. BMW has dramatically turned up the performance for the 2023 iX with the introduction of the new iX model. The electric SUV didn’t exactly need more performance, but BMW’s known for its sporty vehicles, so it only makes sense. Beyond its impressive performance, the iX is a compelling EV thanks to its spacious interior, futuristic design, smooth ride quality, and cutting-edge tech features. As long as you can look past its controversial front end, the iX is a great sign of what’s to come from BMW.

Competitors in the midsize segment include the Rivian R1S, which has a more traditional look, incredible off-roading capability, a premium interior, up to 835 hp, 316 miles of range, and seating for up to seven. The Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV is the most obvious rival to the iX with an opulent cabin, loads of impressive tech features, up to 536 hp, and a range of 305 miles.
