Overview

What's New

The 2023 Cadillac CT5 continues as the brand's midsize sedan with new paint colors only. The CT5 hit the market in 2020 and added a high-performance Blackwing model last year.

Choosing Your Cadillac CT5

Cadillac offers the CT5 in five trim levels: Luxury, Premium Luxury, Sport, V-Series, and V-Series Blackwing. Pricing starts at $39,590 including destination and tops out at $92,390 for the V-Series Blackwing before options.

Engine Choices

The Luxury, Premium Luxury, and Sport start out with rear-wheel drive and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. All-wheel drive is available for $2,000. The Premium Luxury can also get a V6 twin-turbo for $3,500. The V-Series carries a high-output version of the V6, and AWD remains available.

The rear-drive-only V-Series Blackwing packs a mighty supercharged V8, paired with a six-speed manual transmission or the 10-speed automatic ($3,175).

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The CT5 is a midsize luxury sedan with ample room for five. The trunk holds 11.9 cubic feet, which is a little below average for a sedan this size.

Safety Features

The CT5 starts off with lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, rear parking sensors, and automatic emergency braking.

Stepping up to Premium Luxury, Sport, or V-Series brings radar-enhanced front and rear automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and front parking sensors.

The $1,790 Parking Package for these trims adds surround-view cameras with a recorder, a rearview camera mirror, rear pedestrian alert, and an automated parking system. The package also provides a power hands-free trunk lid, a cabin air purifier, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and power-folding side mirrors.

There's also a Technology Package ($1,100) with a head-up display and a 12-inch configurable instrument screen. Buyers can add Cadillac's SuperCruise semi-autonomous driving system for $3,700.

The V-Series Blackwing reverts to the standard set of safety features, but options are available. The Parking Package costs $1,110 here, and the $900 Driver Assist Package adds adaptive cruise control and the enhanced front and rear automatic emergency braking system. SuperCruise isn't offered on the Blackwing.

Connectivity

The standard infotainment system for the Luxury, Premium Luxury, and Sport includes a 10-inch touchscreen, nine speakers, HD radio and satellite radio, three USB ports, an SD card reader, wireless phone charging, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. On these trims, navigation and a 15-speaker Bose sound system are available together for $1,350.

As for the V-Series, the Bose system is standard, while the V-Series Blackwing gets a 16-speaker AKG sound system. Navigation is bundled with a performance data and video recorder for $2,100 on these models.

CarsDirect Tip

The 2023 Cadillac CT5 in Luxury trim looks like a real bargain until you realize what's not included or even available. The Premium Luxury and Sport are much better values, despite costing more. The regular V-Series offers a surprising level of performance for the price, though the Blackwing variant is the true super sedan of the lot.

Easy To Use Tech. Some luxury automakers have moved to replacing physical buttons with touch-capacitive controls and fitting their cars with screens that are as large as some laptops. Thankfully, that isn’t the case with the 2023 Cadillac CT5. While its interior design may come off as dated and simple compared to rivals, the benefit of the design is that it’s simple to use.

The CT5 may have a busy center console layout, but the sedan features physical controls that are clearly labeled and easy to reach. All CT5 models come with a 10-inch touchscreen with Cadillac’s CUE infotainment system. The infotainment system doesn’t have the same polish or flashy graphics as infotainment systems from rivals but features straightforward menus, a quick response time, and well-placed physical controls for ease of use.

One of the 2023 CT5’s standout features is Super Cruise. It’s a hands-free driver-assist system that makes it easy to travel long distances on the highway. It’s an expensive package as it’s only available on higher trim levels and is bundled with other expensive options. Additionally, Cadillac offers Super Cruise via a monthly subscription. Still, the CT5 is one of the few vehicles on the market that’s offered with hands-free driver assist system.

Daily Driver To Track Monster. The midsize CT5 is offered in a range of powertrains. From the base CT5, that’s all about being a comfortable daily driver, to the track-oriented CT5-V Blackwing, the CT5 has a model that will appeal to a variety of different drivers.

The standard turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine starts things off with a modest output of 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. There’s nothing really wrong with the engine, it’s just down on power compared to base engines in rivals and doesn’t have the same acceleration.

The Premium Luxury trim is offered with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine for an extra $3,500. While it’s a hefty upgrade, it brings a large bump in performance to 335 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque. The V6 delivers much better acceleration. We’d say that consumers should consider this as the entry-level engine.

The CT5-V is the base performance model in the lineup. It gets a tuned version of the turbo V6 that makes 360 hp. Compared to the V6 engine in the Premium Luxury trim, an extra 25 hp doesn’t make a world of difference, but the CT5-V comes with other high-performance components to justify its $4,800 upgrade.

The top dog in the lineup is the CT5-V Blackwing. It gets its own supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine that generates an incredible 668 hp and 659 lb-ft of torque. This model can get to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and hit a top speed of 200 mph. The CT5-V Blackwing is offered with a manual transmission, which is a rarity for a luxurious midsize sedan.

Cadillac CT5

Affordable, But Lacking Luxury. The 2023 CT5 continues to be one of the more affordable midsize sedans in the class. The CT5 is more affordable than most of its competitors from Germany, Japan, and Britain with a starting price tag of $39,590 (including destination).

While it’s nice to see the CT5 cost less than its competitors, the downside to the affordable price tag is that the sedan doesn’t feel nearly as luxurious as its competitors. Move your hand around the cabin and you’re bound to find some low-quality materials. The CT5’s interior houses a lot of hard plastics that look and feel cheap.

Usually, a few subpar interior materials wouldn’t bother us, but competitors like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Volvo S90 have interiors that feel downright luxurious. Some competitors have moved further upstream with their midsize options, which puts the CT5 in an odd position because it feels like it’s going backward.

Small Cabin, Little Trunk. Based on the CT5’s exterior design and size, one would expect the vehicle to have a large interior. That’s far from the case.

The CT5’s front seats have a good amount of cushion and are supportive, but more importantly, there’s a decent amount of headroom and legroom in the first row. In the back, passengers get 37.9 inches of legroom, which is a good amount, but the sedan only has 36.6 inches of rear headroom. Taller adults may find it difficult to get comfortable in the back.

Cargo capacity in the CT5 is also disappointing. The midsize sedan offers up to 11.9 cubic feet of cargo space, which is one of the smallest figures for the class.

Final Thoughts. The 2023 Cadillac CT5 stands out because of its high-performance CT5-V and CT5-V Blackwing models. Without those models, the sedan would be regulated to the back of the segment. The CT5 delivers on the sporty front with punchy engines, sharp handling, and an available manual transmission. When it comes to luxury, tech features, or interior space, nearly every other midsize sedan in the segment bests the CT5.

For example, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a technological powerhouse with cutting-edge features. It’s also incredibly luxurious, is available in a high-performance AMG model, and is available in a roomy wagon body style. The Volvo S90 has a plush ride, a gorgeous design, an upscale cabin, and a lengthy list of standard safety features.
