What's New

The 2023 Cadillac XT4 receives the usual exterior color updates. We expected a refresh of the small luxury crossover this year, but Cadillac has apparently postponed significant changes.

Choosing Your Cadillac XT4

The 2023 Cadillac XT4 continues in three trim levels: Luxury, Premium Luxury, and Sport. Pricing starts at $37,490 including destination and goes to $41,990 for the Sport before options.

Engine Choices

Every 2023 Cadillac XT4 carries a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and front-wheel drive are standard. All-wheel drive is available on all trims for $2,500.

The XT4 is EPA-rated at 24 miles gallon city, 30 mpg highway, and 26 combined. With AWD, estimates ease to 22/29/24 mpg (city/highway/combined).

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The 2023 Cadillac XT4 is a subcompact crossover with seating for five, although four is the limit for comfort on long rides.

The XT4 offers 22.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat and 48.9 cubic feet with it folded. These are typical numbers for a luxury crossover of this size. Styling and passenger comfort are more important utility in this class.

Safety Features

The 2023 Cadillac XT4 Luxury comes with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. The $470 Driver Awareness Package adds a following distance indicator, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high beams. These items are standard on the Premium Luxury and Sport, along with front parking sensors.

The $1,100 Driver Assist Package for the Premium Luxury and Sport adds adaptive cruise control and radar-enhanced automatic braking with reverse function. With these features in place, buyers can add the Enhanced Visibility Package ($1,500) with surround-view cameras, a rear camera washer, rear pedestrian alert, a rearview camera mirror, and an automated parking system.

The Technology Package for the Premium Luxury ($1,650) and Sport ($1,400) includes a head-up display.

The standard infotainment system for all XT4 trims includes an 8-inch touchscreen, seven speakers, HD and satellite radio, two front and two rear USB ports, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

The optional infotainment system ($1,500) adds navigation and a 13-speaker Bose Centerpoint surround-sound system. Wireless device charging is a $300 standalone option on all trims — and is also available in the Technology Package for the Premium Luxury and Sport.

2023 Cadillac XT4 Luxury — MSRP From $37,490

The XT4 starts out with leatherette upholstery, an eight-way power driver seat and a six-way power passenger seat, remote start, proximity key access, and a power liftgate. The exterior wears 18-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights and taillights.

The Cold Weather Package ($850) adds a heated steering wheel and heated front and rear seats. With this bundle in place, buyers can add genuine leather seats for $1,500. A panoramic sunroof costs $1,700.

The $2,695 Radiant Package distinguishes the outside with monochrome emblems, a silver grille, and 20-inch polished alloy wheels.

2023 Cadillac XT4 Premium Luxury — MSRP From $41,390

The Premium Luxury receives a genuine leather interior with wood or aluminum trim, ambient lighting, driver memory settings, and cargo cover. Other upgrades include a hands-free power liftgate, automatic wipers, power-folding side mirrors, and nickel-finish wheels. The Radiant Package remains available.

Models equipped with Cold Weather Package are eligible for a Comfort and Convenience Package ($950) with ventilated front seats, massaging front seats with eight-way passenger power, and perforated leather seat inserts. In addition to the head-up display and wireless charging, the Technology Package adds a digital gauge cluster, a power-adjustable steering wheel, a cabin air purifier, and front cornering lights with LED turn signals.

2023 Cadillac XT4 Sport — MSRP From $41,990

The Sport loses the standard leather seats and wood or aluminum interior trim but picks up a sport steering wheel, alloy pedals, a unique grille, red brake calipers, black exterior trim, standard cornering lights, and 10-spoke wheels. The Comfort and Convenience Package increases to $2,350 because it includes leather upholstery, and the Technology Package drops to $1,400 since cornering lights are already standard.

Available on the Sport only is a $700 adaptive sport suspension.

CarsDirect Tip

The 2022 Cadillac XT4 carries a very attractive base MSRP but lacks standard features that buyers expect in this class. The Premium Luxury feels more like a proper Cadillac right out of the box. The Sport may look aggressive, but its unique features are purely cosmetic without the adaptive suspension added.

Expert Review

  • Rides and handles well
  • Base model is well equipped
  • Handsome from any angle
  • Plenty of room inside
  • Low-rent cabin disappoints
  • Larger wheels ruin the ride
  • Higher trims are far too pricey
  • Fuel economy is only okay

Dressed to kill. There’s no way around it – Cadillac’s 2023 XT4 is a seriously stylish SUV. Far more striking than its hunchback XT5 sibling, there are points of design interest from every angle. Just look at those weeping front headlights, or the Volvo-esque taillights sitting pretty above twin rectangular tailpipes. We’re not fans of the brilliant white paint, but otherwise, the XT4 looks poised and purposeful from any angle and in any color scheme.

It’s what’s on the inside that counts. You might expect this visual drama to continue once the solid doors clunk shut behind you. Yet settle into the driver’s seat, and your surroundings could have been lifted from a budget Chevy. There’s plastic everywhere – gloss black on the gear shifter, scratchy dimpled gray on the steering wheel boss, fake silver on one of two extensive rows of buttons beneath the blocky infotainment screen. Not only does everything look last-decade, it feels it, too. The cynical individual might be tempted to try and peel back the Cadillac badge on the steering wheel, to see if there’s a plus hiding underneath.

At least the low-rent interior isn’t cramped. In fact, there’s loads of room in here. You wouldn’t fit three in the back, but two rear riders will luxuriate in almost 40 inches of legroom, while those up front gain an additional four inches over and above that. Oddment space is lacking, but the trunk is decently sized and can accommodate 50 cu ft once the back seats are dropped. It’s a shame that the shallow rear windows make it hard for smaller passengers to see out, while the thick rear pillars obscure visibility in car parks and at junctions.

Impressive road manners. Nobody expects a mid-sized SUV to set the heather alight as a driving tool, so the XT4’s pleasant road manners are a welcome surprise. The stock in its soup is a 235 hp turbocharged gas engine, which spins smoothly and applies its power seamlessly through a nine-speed auto box. On smaller 18-inch wheels, it rides comfortably and grips pretty well; if you’re going for 20-inchers, we’d recommend the adaptive dampers available on Sport models. Look past the name, though, since there’s nothing sporty about this model.

The supple ride is bolstered (pun intended) by well-sprung seats which are probably the most Cadillac-y part of the interior. Front and rear occupants alike are equally well supported whether they’re perched on real or synthetic leather, with front-seat massaging functionality an optional extra.

Cadillac XT4

Generous equipment. There’s little reason to stray higher up the XT4 food chain than base Luxury trim, which has the added advantage of costing just $37,000. It comes with everything you need – power adjustable synthetic leather seats and wireless smartphone mirroring through an eight-inch touchscreen.

You won’t miss out on much safety tech at the lowest price point, either. Every XT4 is sold with blind spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking and more airbags than you could shake a five-star NHTSA rating at. You can add a surround-view camera system and adaptive cruise as options, and we would recommend the former since the roof pillars are too thick for wraparound visibility. All-wheel drive is an across-the-range option, though it has an annoying FWD function which is easy to forget about when road surfaces become more treacherous.

Final thoughts. Looking at the section headings above gives you a pretty good steer on our conclusions. The XT4 is a good driver with a well-equipped cabin whose dourness seems jarring after the exterior’s visual drama. Since you’ll spend a lot more time looking at the melted-down-action-figure dash than the hunky exterior, that’s a major flaw. It’s also disappointing when you consider how effortlessly cool and stylish modern Volvo and Mazda SUV cabins have become, with their double-stitched leather and tactile plastics.

If you can live with its bargain-bucket cabin, the Luxury trim makes a great deal of sense. It’s well priced, spacious and generously equipped with good safety ratings. There’s little body lean in corners, and the smaller 18-inch wheels provide a refined ride that complements high-caliber seating. Don’t be tempted to upgrade to the false-advertising Sport or the unjustifiably expensive Premium Luxury trim, whose price can hit $55,000 with a few options.
