Overview

What's New

Beyond gaining some new wheel designs and paint colors, the 2023 Chevrolet Camaro enters the new model year without any major changes. The current generation belongs to the sixth-gen model that was introduced in 2016. With Ford introducing a fully redesigned Mustang for 2024, we expect to see a fully redesigned Camaro in the near future.

Choosing Your Chevrolet Camaro

The Camaro has an extensive lineup with a wide range of configurations. The Camaro is offered in a coupe and convertible body styles. The coupe is available in eight trims, while the convertible is available in seven. Then, you also have to choose between four engines, automatic or manual transmissions, and a few performance-oriented packages. There are plenty of options to comb through with the Camaro.

Prices for the 2023 Camaro 1LS coupe start at $27,495 and go up to $69,695 (with the gas guzzler tax and destination fee) for the ZL1. Pricing for the Camaro convertible ranges from $33,995 to $75,695.

Engine Choices

As a sports car, there’s really no bad engine in the Camaro’s lineup. Things certainly ramp up the higher up the food chain you go and Chevrolet’s powertrain lineup for the Camaro is comprehensive with the sports car being offered with a four-cylinder engine, a V6, and two V8s. Obviously, fuel economy takes a hit when you move up to one of the higher engines.

The supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine in the ZL1 is one of the more powerful engines available in an American sports car and provides the Camaro with an incredible amount of thrust. For most people, the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 engine has plenty of grunt and isn’t too far off the V6 on the fuel economy front. We prefer the available V6 engine to the base four-cylinder and it’s not a ridiculous upgrade, costing just under $1,600.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

You’ll find four seats in the Camaro, but the rear seats are only usable by tiny children. The rear seats are better off for being used as extra storage. The Camaro coupe offers up to 9.1 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk, while the convertible has 7.3 cubic feet of cargo space.

Safety Features

The 2023 Camaro doesn’t come with any advanced driver-assist safety features as standard equipment. The sports car comes with eight airbags, traction control, stability control, and Chevrolet’s Teen Driver system as standard.

Shoppers looking to get forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, a head-up display, and rear parking sensors will have to move up to the 3LT trim. These features are dropped on the LT1 and 1SS but return as standard on the 2SS and above.

Connectivity

Similar to safety features, consumers wanting the best in tech features will have to move up to a higher trim level. Lower models come with a 7-inch touchscreen with Chevrolet’s Infotainment 3 system. Standard features include a Wi-Fi hotspot, six audio speakers, Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six audio speakers, and voice recognition.

An 8-inch touchscreen, a Bose audio system, and a wireless charging pad become standard on the 3LT trim. Navigation is available starting with the 3LT trim.

2023 Chevrolet Camaro 1LS – MSRP From $27,495

The base 1LS trim comes sparsely equipped. The 1LS comes with an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, cruise control, bucket seats, keyless entry, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, power windows and door locks, automatic climate control, and 18-inch wheels.

2023 Chevrolet Camaro 1LT – MSRP From $29,390

The 1LT trim adds a six-way power-adjustable passenger seat and satellite radio. It’s the first trim to be available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine.

The available Technology Package costs $900. It brings a larger 8-inch touchscreen and a Bose audio system.

2023 Chevrolet Camaro 2LT – MSRP From $31,390

The 2LT includes dual-zone automatic climate control, as well as heated and ventilated front seats.

The $900 Technology Package is available on the 2LT.

2023 Chevrolet Camaro 3LT – MSRP From $35,390

Going with the 3LT trim brings aluminum interior trim, a heated steering wheel, illuminated sill plates, a rear camera mirror, and illuminated visor mirrors.

2023 Chevrolet Camaro LT1 – MSRP From $38,890

The LT1 gets a few performance upgrades over lower trims in the form of Brembo brakes, an external engine oil cooler, upgraded suspension, a different rear axle ratio, and 20-inch wheels.

The LT1 trades these performance features for tech ones, as it comes with a 7-inch touchscreen, single-zone automatic climate control, and the Camaro’s standard safety features.

Chevy offers the LT1 with the $900 Technology Package.

2023 Chevrolet Camaro 1SS – MSRP From $42,390

The 1SS is the first Camaro to come with a 6.2-liter V8 engine. It also comes standard with an auxiliary engine coolant cooler, an extra capacity cooling system, a rear differential cooler, SS Brembo brakes, and summer-only tires.

The $7,000 SS 1LE Track Performance Package is a must for consumers looking to spend time at the track. It includes Recaro bucket seats, a rear spoiler, magnetic ride control, performance suspension, an electronic limited-slip differential, Brembo brakes, a flat-bottom steering wheel with suede microfiber, a dual-mode exhaust system, 20-inch wheels, and a head-up display.

2023 Chevrolet Camaro 2SS – MSRP From $47,390

The 2SS combines all of the features from the 1SS with the 3LT. It comes standard with heated exterior mirrors, an auto-dimming driver’s side exterior mirror, dual-zone automatic climate control, a head-up display, and memory settings for the driver’s seat.

The 2SS is also available with the $7,000 SS 1LE Track Performance Package.

2023 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 – MSRP From $69,695

The range-topping ZL1 is the only trim to come with a supercharged V8 engine. It also comes standard with an electronic limited-slip differential, magnetic ride control, and a launch control system. The ZL1 comes with upgraded brakes, summer-only performance tires, alloy sport pedals, 20-inch wheels, Recaro front bucket seats, and a steering wheel that’s wrapped in faux suede.

The available ZL1 1LE Extreme Track Performance Package is only for those that want maximum on-track performance. It includes 19-inch summer tires, adjustable performance suspension, front dive planes, a front splitter, red brake calipers, a large rear spoiler, and a carbon fiber hood. The package is priced at $7,500.

CarsDirect Tip

With Chevrolet only offering the Camaro 3LT with advanced safety features as standard equipment, that’s the trim we recommend. It isn’t available with the V8 engine, but the V6 should have enough power for most. For shoppers yearning for a V8, the 2SS stands out as the best choice thanks to its list of equipment that matches the 3LT’s.

You still can’t see out of it. Visibility has been one of the biggest gripes with the Camaro since it was resurrected in 2010. Now, 12 years later, you still can’t see out of it. The aggressively angled windshield results in a roofline not unlike a chop-top hot rod, resulting in arguably the poorest forward visibility of any car on the market. The problem is exacerbated further if you’re tall.

1LE package for all. One of our favorite things about the 2023 Camaro is that the 1LE handling package is available across the entire model range. It’s not unheard of for manufacturers to only offer performance options like that on high-dollar trims, so it’s refreshing for Chevy to give us the choice of a four-cylinder Camaro with Brembos and a beefy suspension setup. The 1LE’s stiffer suspension doesn’t compromise ride quality too much either, which is a plus.

Plentiful powertrains. There are four engine options currently available in the Camaro. The 275hp turbocharged four-cylinder found in the 1 and 2LT trims actually moves the car pretty well, but leaves a lot to be desired in the throttle response and exhaust note departments.

The optional V6 boosts power to 335 hp, and creates a much more enjoyable experience overall. It might sound counterintuitive, but a V6 Camaro with the 1LE package equipped makes for a pretty serious performance car.

The 1SS and 2SS trims are powered by a hearty 6.2L V8 that churns out both 455 hp and lb-ft of torque. Unsurprisingly, the SS Camaros and really move, and throttle response is immediate throughout the rev range.

If that wasn’t enough for you, the 650 hp supercharged V8 in the track-focused ZL1 will certainly meet your performance needs. The ZL1 is blisteringly fast no matter how you stack it up. Sure, it gets 13 mpg city, but the ZL1 is immensely powerful and can keep up with cars with another digit on their price tag.

Chevrolet Camaro

Ho-hum fuel economy. In case you forgot, the Camaro is a muscle car. The four-cylinder models are rated at a good but not great 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway with the 10-speed automatic. The V6 doesn’t suffer much in the economy department despite the additional oomph, with ratings of 18 city and 29 highway. Owning a V8 Camaro is not for fuel-conscious, with figures as low as a paltry 13 and 21 mpg for the supercharged ZL1.

Impressive handling. Gone are the days of muscle cars being one-trick ponies. The Camaro’s chassis is very well-balanced and is impressively flickable through backroads and tight corners. The aforementioned 1LE package furthers the experience by adding Brembo brakes, improved cooling and suspension, and a limited-slip differential, which turns any Camaro into a viable track car. The ZL1’s prowess goes well beyond straight-line speed as well; it is a serious track weapon.

Nifty interior. The current iteration Camaro features a more impressive interior than its predecessors. The dash layout is more modern compared to the faux-retro look sported by previous models. The 8” screen is rather intuitive, and features like wireless smartphone connectivity and a Wi-Fi hotspot are all standard. The Camaro is the only muscle car to have an available head-up display as well.

Short on practicality. If you were set on a Camaro with the intent of carrying multiple passengers or hauling a full trunk on a regular basis, well we have some bad news for you. The rear seats are very cramped, even for a two-door muscle car. Don’t expect to ever fit an adult back there. The trunk is a bit of a mess as well, as the already minuscule 9.1 cubic feet is made even more useless by a needlessly high load floor.

Stingy on safety features. Chevy was quite generous with the standard equipment throughout the Camaro’s numerous trim levels. Unfortunately, one notable exception would be its safety features. You’ll need to shell out for at least a 3LT to get blind spot monitoring and parking sensors. Automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control are nowhere to be found anywhere in the model lineup.

Final thoughts. The 2023 Chevrolet Camaro is a serious performance car. The whole Camaro family can be optioned for dominating a track day, and the chassis is thoroughly impressive (and not just for a muscle car). Paying top dollar for a high-performance Camaro used to mean getting a car that could go fast in a straight line, and that’s about it. The ZL1 however, can tear up a track up there with Europe’s top imports.

The Camaro is still flawed. It’s basically a two-seater that offers horrid visibility. Don’t expect to save at the pump either. That being said, you get a lot of performance here for the money, and that’s what a Camaro is really about.
