Overview

What's New

The 2023 Ford Expedition received a refresh last year and carries into the new year relatively unchanged.

Choosing Your Ford Expedition

The Expedition is offered in six trims: XL, XLT, Limited, Timberline, King Ranch, and Platinum. Base prices range from $54,700 to $80,955 with destination.

The Expedition is also offered in the extended-length Expedition Max version in the XLT, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum trims for an extra $2,000.

Engine Choices

All models are equipped with a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 and a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Timberline trim receives a high-output version as does the Limited trim’s optional Stealth Performance package. Rear-wheel drive is standard and four-wheel drive is optional ($3,050) on all trims except the off-road-oriented Timberline trim, where it is standard.

TrimEngine Type / TransmissionHorsepowerTorqueEconomy (Combined)

Limited, Platinum, King Ranch3.5-L V6 Turbocharged 10-speed automatic400 hp480 lb-ft18 mpg (AWD)
Timberline, Limited (opt.)3.5-L V6 Turbocharged 10-speed automatic440 hp510 lb-ft17 mpg (AWD)

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The XL trim offers room for five while the XLT-and-up trims feature a power-folding third row. The Limited trim swaps the second-row bench seat for captains chairs which lowers the passenger count to seven.

The large SUV offers 41.5 inches of legroom in the second row and 36.1 inches for the third-row passengers – a figure that is better than what is offered in the Tahoe but not the Suburban.

The Expedition Max stretches the body by about 12 inches with all of that going towards increasing cargo capacity. Space behind the third row increases from 19 cubic feet to 34 and, with both rows folded from 105 cubic feet to 122 which is not as large as either of the Chevrolet duo.

The Expedition’s maximum towing rating ranges from 9,000 pounds for the Max four-wheel-drive models to 9,300 for the lightest rear-wheel-drive version.

Ford Expedition

Safety Features

The Expedition features essential active safety technology such as automatic emergency braking, blind spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keep assist, as well as a few helpful features such as automatic high beams and rear parking sensors. The Limited trim gains adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and front parking sensors (all are also available on the Timberline trim) and offers a surround-view monitor, reverse brake assist, and parking assist which are standard on the King Ranch and Platinum trims. Ford’s highway driving assist system called BlueCruise is standard on the Platinum.

Connectivity

The base trim is equipped with a 12-inch touchscreen, remote connectivity, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. There are four 12V outlets and four USB ports provided throughout the cabin. The XLT gains SiriusXM with 360L and additional USB charge ports for the third row and the Limited is equipped with upgraded audio, HD radio, and a wireless charging pad. A larger 15.5-inch touchscreen is offered on the Limited and Timberline and standard on the King Ranch and Platinum which also receive a premium sound system.

Room For Everyone. The 2023 Ford Expedition and Expedition Max are the largest SUVs in the automaker’s lineup. For shoppers that look at the midsize Explorer and think it’s way too small, the Expedition lineup is the ideal vehicle. The large SUV utilizes the same platform as the F-150, giving it an enormous interior instead of a large truck bed. Need space? The Expedition has loads of it.

Few SUVs are as spacious as the Expedition. The base version of the Expedition offers seating for five, maximizing the amount of cargo space that’s available. While it may seem like a waste to have such a large SUV only offer five seats, it’s a great option for shoppers that need maximum cargo capacity for overlanding or routinely handling large cargo. Higher trims come with three rows of seats for up to eight people. If you happen to have eight people that you need to move in a single vehicle, they won’t be cramped in the Expedition. Because of the SUV’s enormous size, there’s a generous amount of space in all three rows.

The third row is surprisingly roomy for adults with 36.1 inches of legroom and 37.3 inches of headroom. Adults won’t complain about sitting in the back, even if it’s for long drives. The second row is even more generously sized with 41.5 inches of legroom and 40 inches of headroom. Opting for the available pair of captain’s chairs in the second-row results in an SUV that’s nearly as roomy and comfortable as a minivan for families.

Pickup Truck Performance. While most large SUVs in the segment continue to come with V8 engines, Ford ditched its eight-cylinder engine for the Expedition a long time ago. The Expedition is exclusively available with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine, though there are three different versions of the engine.

The base twin-turbo V6 starts things off with 380 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. It’s an impressive amount of power and compares well to V8 engines found in rivals. For added performance, the Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum trims get a power boost to 400 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. It’s not a huge upgrade, but drivers can feel the difference. Ford saves the most power for the Timberline and Stealth Performance Edition which has 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. With the available 440-hp engine, the Expedition offers impressive acceleration and is even quicker than some V8-powered options.

The Expedition is the modern minivan, but it offers something no other minivan does – stout towing capacity. When properly equipped, the Expedition can tow up to 9,300 pounds. The longer Expedition Max loses 300 pounds of towing capacity to the smaller SUV. Either way, the Expedition and Expedition Max are some of the most capable large SUVs in the segment, delivering nearly full-size pickup truck levels of towing capacity.

Ford Expedition

Available High-Tech Features. The Expedition got a major tech upgrade last year that continues to help the large SUV be one of the more tech-forward options in the class. The SUV comes with a standard 12-inch touchscreen and an eight-inch digital instrument cluster, which are impressive to see as standard equipment in the segment. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice recognition, a Wi-Fi hotspot, six audio speakers, and four USB ports are also standard.

The large SUV’s list of available tech features is even more impressive. A 15.5-inch touchscreen that’s vertically oriented is available, as is a 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster, a 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system, and a wireless charging pad. While the optional touchscreen is visually impressive, the SYNC 4 infotainment system is easy to use and intuitively laid out, which we appreciate. Additionally, it’s the same infotainment system and screen you’ll find in the Mustang Mach-E, which is Ford’s most advanced vehicle.

Drivers will find that the 2023 Expedition comes with an impressive list of standard safety features, but the SUV really impresses with its optional safety features. Ford has also looked to the Mach-E for its available BlueCruise system, which is optional for the Expedition. It’s one of the few hands-free driver-assist systems available on the market that allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel while the SUV does most of the driving on the highway. The system works incredibly smoothly and is worth the upgrade for drivers that spend a lot of time on the highway.

Mega Size Is Hard To Drive. At 210 inches long, the Expedition isn’t meant to be a city vehicle. It’s primarily aimed at drivers that live in the suburbs and don’t have to contend with tight roads or parallel parking spots. With roughly an extra 12 inches of length, the Expedition Max is even harder to drive. Despite its V6 engine, the Expedition can’t hide its large size from physics. The best the large SUV can get is 19 mpg combined. Opt for the Timberline trim with all-wheel drive, and the SUV’s fuel economy drops to 17 mpg combined.

For the most part, the Expedition has a cushy ride that irons out road imperfections. On the highway, it takes on this role of feeling like a private airline jet with a smooth feel. Strangely enough, the Expedition still feels like a massive airliner when going around corners. The SUV sways and rocks ungainly when cornering. The SUV’s imprecise steering doesn’t help with the issue.

Final Thoughts. Minivans are out, but large SUVs are in. For shoppers in need of an SUV that offers the same versatility as a minivan, the 2023 Ford Expedition and Expedition Max are great options. One would expect an SUV of this size to be difficult to drive and inefficient, those characteristics are to be expected for a vehicle of this size. Despite its few drawbacks, the Expedition lineup offers impressive performance, great towing capacity, cutting-edge tech features, and an enormous interior that’s spacious enough for the family and then some.

For comparison, the Chevrolet Tahoe is one of Expedition’s main rivals. It’s available with burly V8s and an efficient diesel, feels far more athletic around corners, has an adult-friendly third row, and is available with General Motors’ hands-free Super Cruise system. The Jeep Wagoneer is one of the newer large SUVs in the class. It features a plush ride, impressive off-roading capability, an upscale cabin, and a 10,000-pound towing capacity.
