Overview

What's New

The 2023 Hyundai Tucson is still feeling fresh from its 2022 launch. The XRT trim is new and adds some off-road styling while the other trims see expanded applicability of the large touchscreen, wireless charging, digital key access, and adaptive cruise control.

Choosing Your Hyundai Tucson

The gas-only Tucson is available in five trims: SE, SEL, XRT, N Line, and Limited. Base prices range from $27,745 to $37,005.

The hybrid Tucson is available in three trims: Blue, SEL Convenience, and Limited. Base prices range from $32,195 to $39,995.

The plug-in hybrid Tucson is offered in two trims: SEL and Limited. The prices for those trims are $38,345 and $45,605.

Engine Choices

The gasoline-only Tucson features a naturally aspirated four-cylinder and an eight-speed automatic transmission with power routed through the front wheels. All-wheel drive is available for $1,500 and is standard on the electrified models which are equipped with a six-speed automatic.

The Plug-In Hybrid features a more powerful motor and a larger capacity battery pack to provide an estimated 33 miles of EV driving and then return about 35 mpg combined. It also includes a 7.2kW onboard charger that can recharge Tucson in about two hours.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Tucson stretches to 182.3 inches, sits 73.4 inches wide, and can carry five passengers. Those in the back are provided with 41.3 inches of legroom which drops by a couple of inches in the Plug-In Hybrid model.

The gasoline and hybrid models also provide a larger cargo space with 38.8 cubic feet of cargo space compared to the PHEV’s 31.9 cubic feet. With the rear seats folded, cargo volume measures 74.5 and 66.3 cubic feet, respectively.

All powertrains are capable of pulling 2,000 pounds.

The XRT and up trims feature an ultrasonic rear occupant alert while the Limited trim adds a host of items such as a surround-view monitor, parking sensors with automatic reverse braking, a blind-spot display in the gauge cluster, and a highway driving assist system.

The 2023 Tucson earns the IIHS 2022 Top Safety Pick+ award and its safety systems earn Superior scores. NHTSA gives it a five-star crash rating.

Features Galore. Hyundai made a name for itself as a value-forward brand. While Hyundai has been attempting to move past the image of it being a one-trick pony with more dashing designs, premium interiors, and high-tech features, the South Korean brand still shines as a value-oriented choice. The 2023 Hyundai Tucson stands out as one of the brand’s most well-equipped models.

Even the base Tucson comes with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, six audio speakers, two USB ports, and Bluetooth. Higher trim levels really flex their muscles with dual 10.25-inch screens, a Bose audio system, navigation, and a wireless charging pad. The entry-level Tucson also has a long list of safety features that includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, and a driver drowsiness monitor.

With the gas-powered Tucson ranging from roughly $26,000 to $36,000, it offers plenty of value at a great price for the class.

Efficiency Over Performance. The 2023 Tucson is one of the few compact SUVs to be available with three different powertrains. The electrified powertrains are the ones to get, as the base engine has lackluster performance and is well off in terms of fuel economy.

The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is rated at 187 horsepower, which isn’t enough for a compact SUV. Acceleration is sluggish and the engine takes some time to respond to inputs. We can’t recommend avoiding this engine more.

A better option is the turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that’s found in the Tucson Hybrid. In this model, the engine is paired with an electric motor for a combined output of 227 hp. The result is peppier acceleration, standard all-wheel drive, and better fuel economy. The Tucson PHEV has the same engine as the hybrid model, but it’s rated at 261 hp and has 33 miles of all-electric range. Unfortunately, the Tucson PHEV is only available in 10 states in the U.S., which limits its appeal.

When it comes to fuel economy, the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder can get up to 29 mpg combined. Moving to the Tucson Hybrid Blue results in up to 38 mpg combined. The Tucson PHEV can get up to 35 mpg combined.

Hyundai Tucson

Roomy Interior. Vehicles continue to get bigger and bigger every year – this much is evident when you compare the fourth-gen Tucson, which came out in 2022, against an older model. The Tucson is a great family option, as long as that family only needs two rows of seats, because of its roomy interior.

The rear seats are especially roomy, as the rear seats offer 41.3 inches of rear legroom. Three adults will have a difficult time sitting next to one another, but two adults have plenty of space to stretch out. The rear seats recline for added comfort and all of the SUV’s seats are both supportive and comfortable.

On the cargo front, Tucson is one of the roomier SUVs in the segment. There are 38.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and a total of 74.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded. That’s one of the largest figures for the class and an ample amount of space for large cargo.

Successful, But Risky Design. Hyundai definitely didn’t play it safe with Tucson’s exterior design. The cascading grille with hidden lights along the side, chunky fenders, deep body lines, and dramatic taillights result in an SUV that doesn’t look like anything else in the class. We’re fans of the design, but we can understand why some would consider it to be a little much.

The interior design of the Tucson is far more subdued. The compact SUV features a simplistic, but modern design. There are a few odd decision choices, like the push-button shifter and touch-sensitive controls on the center console, but they fit in with the SUV’s high-tech look.

Final Thoughts. As long as you’re not looking for performance, the 2023 Hyundai Tucson is a great compact SUV to consider. It’s available with fuel-efficient engines, has a great list of tech features, features a stunning design, and offers plenty of interior space. The only area where the Tucson lets owners down is in the performance category, as handling and acceleration take a back seat to comfort and efficiency.

The Mazda CX-50 is one of the newer competitors. It has a rugged design, a powerful turbocharged engine, a luxurious interior, and spunky driving dynamics. The Volkswagen Tiguan is one of the few options with three rows of available seating. It also has a roomy interior, athletic handling, and high-tech features.
