Model Preview
The MINI Countryman is the diminutive automaker’s largest offering. It’s a compact crossover that’s larger and rides higher than the standard Hardtop. The Countryman is a carryover model for 2023.
The current iteration of the MINI Countryman has been on sale since 2017, but it received an aesthetic refresh in 2020 and has received incremental technological updates throughout its life cycle.
The Countryman is available with three gasoline powertrains, and as a plug-in hybrid. The base engine is 1.5L turbocharged three-cylinder that develops 134 horsepower. The S model sees an upgrade to the sportier 2.0L four-cylinder that churns out 189 hp. Both these engines are shared with the equivalent MINI Hardtops and Convertibles.
The plug-in hybrid model, called the SE, features the same three-cylinder unit but adds an 87 hp electric motor, bringing total power output to 221 hp. The most powerful Countryman variant would be the performance-focused John Cooper Works. The JCW is powered by a beefed-up 2.0L turbo, sending 301hp to all four wheels. Both the SE and the JCW are only offered in all-wheel drive (which MINI calls ALL4), while the base Cooper and Cooper S are front-wheel drive standard, but are available in ALL4.
Front-wheel drive Countryman trims are standard with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, while AWD models get an eight-speed.
The Countryman’s interior offers distinctive retro styling and premium materials but is short on space compared to its larger competitors. A 6.5” infotainment display is standard, with an 8.8” touchscreen available as an optional extra. Navigation and Apple CarPlay will cost extra as well.
The 2023 MINI Countryman is now available. It competes with the Volvo XC40, BMW X1, and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class.
