Overview

What's New

The 2023 Nissan Altima receives a mid-cycle refresh with a revised front fascia, standard LED headlights, two new exterior colors, newly styled wheels, additional standard active safety features, and an enhanced infotainment system with a larger display. The SL trim receives the features of the previously top-tier Platinum trim as it has been dropped from the line-up.

Choosing Your Nissan Altima

The 2023 Altima sedan is offered in four trims: S, SV, SR, SL, and prices range from $26,385 to $33,085.

Engine Choices

Most 2023 Altima models are equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 188 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque which is distributed to the front wheels through a continuously-variable transmission. All-wheel drive is available for $1,500 and can route up to 50% of available power to the rear wheels.

A 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with variable displacement is offered on the SR trim and produces peak figures of 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. It cannot be paired with the all-wheel-drive system.

The mainstream trims with the 2.5-liter engine and front-wheel drive achieve an EPA-estimated 27 miles per gallon city, 37 mpg highway, and 31 combined while the all-wheel-drive system subtracts just one mpg across the board.

The premium engine’s trick variable-displacement technology brings significantly more power while sacrificing just two combined MPG points.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The 2023 Altima stretches to 193 inches in length which is par for the segment that includes the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. It seats five, however, rear seat room (35.2 inches) is notably less than what is offered by its competitors and its trunk volume - measuring 15.4 cubic feet - is on the smaller end.

Safety Features

Now all Altima trims are equipped with nearly a full suite of active safety technology such as automatic braking with (daytime) pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors with automatic braking, and high beam assist. The SV trim offers adaptive cruise control and lane centering which are standard on the SR (with the upgraded engine selected) and the SL trims.

The Altima earns a five-star crash rating from NHTSA and is a 2022 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ winner.

Connectivity

The 2023 Nissan Altima S trim features a seven-inch touchscreen and a basic level of connectivity while the SV is equipped with an eight-inch screen and more notably gains Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM with 360L, and three additional USB ports.

The new 12.3-inch touchscreen is available and incorporates navigation and other remote connectivity services and is paired with a Bose nine-speaker sound system and a wireless charging pad. The SR with the upgraded engine and the SL trim include the upgrades as standard equipment.

Nissan Altima

2023 Nissan Altima S - MSRP From $26,385

The S trim is a basic sedan with 16-inch steel wheels, LED headlights (new for 2023), power windows and locks, cloth seats, and a five-inch driver information display.

2023 Nissan Altima SV - MSRP From $27,185

The SV includes 17-inch wheels, proximity entry, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a larger driver information display.

A single and significant option group is the SV Premium Package ($2,390) - which includes additional safety equipment and infotainment upgrades, as well as more features such as a sunroof, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

2023 Nissan Altima SR - MSRP From $28,585

The SR adds a sporty flare to the Altima with 19-inch alloy wheels, sport suspension, exhaust finishers, a dark chrome grille, a unique rear diffuser, black mirror caps, and body-side door handles. Inside, sports seats, a carbon grain door trim, and red stitching throughout the interior promote the same theme. The SR Premium Package ($2,890) adds the upgraded infotainment tech and the other features of the SV’s optional package and furthermore includes leather seats and carbon-fiber look trim.

The more powerful SR 2.0 ($36,085) wears the styling of the SR and several premium features such as unique dark gray 19-inch wheels, additional safety and infotainment tech, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, a surround-view monitor, heated leather seats, and dual-zone climate control.

2023 Nissan Altima SL - MSRP From $33,085

The SL adopts the brighter grille and trim of the SV and is fully loaded with 19-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, mirrors with integrated turn signals, heated leather seats, a surround-view monitor, dual-zone climate control, and rear HVAC vents,

CarsDirect Tip

The SV trim with the optional package brings all of the safety gear plus the new-for-2023 infotainment system. The Altima doesn’t offer the premium feel of the Accord or the unique personality of the Sonata but it maintains a strong sense of value. We recommend the SV trim with the optional feature package as it brings everyday-useful modern technology and creature comforts without crossing over the $30,000 mark.

Eye-Catching Exterior Design. Nissan has made some noteworthy changes to the 2023 Altima’s exterior design for the new model year. The new styling is a large upgrade over last year’s sedan, which was a bit dull.

Most of the exterior changes occur at the front end. The 2023 Altima gets a new front end with a more prominent version of Nissan’s V-motion grille that now takes up a lot more space on the front fascia. Sharp LED headlights that have been updated are now standard throughout the lineup. The front air intakes on the side of the front fascia have also grown in size. Consumers will also find four new wheel options that range from 17 to 19 inches.

The changes aren’t radical, but they help the Altima stand up to snazzy midsize sedans like the Hyundai Sonata, Kia K5, and Toyota Camry.

More Reasons To Skip Base Trim. The entry-level S trim continues to come sparsely equipped with a 5-inch display, Bluetooth, six audio speakers, and a single USB ports. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto aren’t available until the SV trim, which comes with an 8-inch touchscreen.

If you needed more reasons to look past the Altima’s base S trim, Nissan has come out with a huge tech upgrade for the 2023 model year. A new 12.3-inch touchscreen is optional starting with the SV trim. In addition to a larger screen, the 12.3-inch unit also brings crisper graphics and an updated interface. Another reason to upgrade to a trim or package with the new infotainment system is to get wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

It's odd to see such a large gap in the level of features in the Altima lineup. Higher trims have high-end features, while lower ones have some of the most outdated features in the segment.

Nissan Altima

More Standard Safety Features. The 2023 Altima now comes with Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 suite of advanced safety features. The suite includes more features than what you’ll find with the Altima’s competitors and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, forward and reverse automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Nissan’s ProPilot Assist system is still available on SV, SL, and SR trims. With a front-facing camera, a forward-facing radar, sensors, and an electronic control module, the system can handle a lot of the driving on the highway. The availability of the ProPilot Assist system is yet another reason to move up to a higher trim level.

Where’s The Hybrid Or Power? When it comes to performance, the Altima is all about moderation. Unlike its rivals, the Altima isn’t available with an efficient hybrid engine or a potent motor with gutsy acceleration.

The standard engine in the Altima is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that has a modest output of 188 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. Those figures are for models with front-wheel drive. Adding all-wheel drive lowers output to 182 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. For a car that weighs upwards of 3,300 pounds, the standard engine doesn’t have the oomph to get the sedan down the road in a hurry. The standard continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) also saps any sportiness the base four-cylinder engine has.

Nissan offers the Altima with an optional turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that has a high-tech variable-compression system to make 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Oddly, the engine is only available on the SR trim and is exclusively offered with front-wheel drive. This engine helps the sedan feel significantly quicker in a straight line, but it’s nowhere near as powerful as engines you’ll find in competitors.

There is some good news to share with the Altima’s powertrains. The sedan is incredibly efficient for the class. Without any changes, the 2023 Altima should have the same fuel economy ratings as the 2022 model. That means the thriftiest Altima will be able to get up to 32 mpg combined, while the thirstiest will have a combined fuel economy rating of 29 mpg.

Final Thoughts. The changes Nissan made to the 2023 Altima have made the sedan more competitive, but they haven’t done enough to make the sedan a top choice. While the available 12.3-inch infotainment system is impressive and the sedan looks sharper than before, competitors have better engines, more well-equipped trims, and more extensive lineups. The Altima still has a way to go if it wants to compete with the leaders.

The Honda Accord continues to be a top choice. It has an available 252-hp turbo engine, an available hybrid model, athletic handling, a roomy interior, and an intuitive infotainment system.

The Hyundai Sonata is the best-looking sedan in the segment. It has a well-rounded lineup with a sporty N Line trim and an efficient hybrid model. Hyundai packs the Sonata with high-tech features and high-end interior materials.
