Overview

What's New

Buick has introduced a refreshed Encore GX for 2024. The subcompact SUV arrives with a new exterior styling that includes updated lighting, new front and rear bumpers, a revised grille, and new wheels designs. The SUV also gets Buick’s updated Tri-Shield logo. Buick has also introduced more tech features for the 2024 model year with a new 11-inch touchscreen and an eight-inch digital instrument cluster. New tech features include wireless smartphone compatibility.

Changes have also been made to the 2024 Buick Encore GX’s lineup. The Select trim has been replaced with the Sport Touring, while the Essence has been dropped in favor of the Avenir.

Choosing Your Buick Encore GX

Buick offers the 2024 Encore GX in three trims: Preferred, Sport Touring, and Avenir. Pricing for the SUV starts at $26,895 (with destination) for the Preferred trim and goes up to $33,195 for the Avenir.

Engine Choices

While the Encore GX arrives with a host of changes for 2024, Buick has not touched the subcompact SUV’s powertrains. The SUV continues to come with a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine, but for 2024, it’s only available with the Preferred trim. The turbo 1.3-liter three-cylinder engine is now standard on the Sport Touring and Avenir.

All-wheel drive is available for an extra $2,000 on the Preferred trim and an extra $1,600 on Sport Touring and Avenir trims. AWD is only available with the 1.3-liter engine.

Front-wheel-drive models come with a continuously variable automatic transmission, while AWD models have a nine-speed automatic transmission.

1.3L Turbo 3-Cylinder155 hp174 lb-ft30/27 mpg (FWD/AWD)

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The subcompact Encore GX offers seating for up to five people, though it doesn’t offer a large amount of space with 38.1 inches of rear headroom and 36 inches of rear legroom. When it comes to cargo capacity, the Encore GX offers up to 23.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and a total of 50.2 cubic feet of cargo space.

Safety Features

Standard safety features on the Encore GX include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high-beam assist.

The Encore GX is available with the Advanced Technology Package which costs $1,095. It adds adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, and a surround-view parking camera.

The Avenir is available with the Avenir Technology Package which adds adaptive cruise control, a rear camera mirror, and a surround-view camera for $1,395. The Avenir Convenience Package costs $1,295 and includes rear parking sensors and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Connectivity

For 2024, the Encore GX arrives with more advanced tech features. The subcompact SUV comes with an 11-inch touchscreen and an eight-inch digital instrument cluster. Other standard features include Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six audio speakers, satellite radio, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The available Advanced Technology Package adds a wireless charging pad on top of advanced safety features for $1,095. Choosing the Avenir trim and the Avenir Convenience Package brings a Bose seven-speaker audio system for $1,295.

2023 Buick Encore GX Preferred – MSRP From $26,895

The base Preferred trim comes with 18-inch wheels, automatic LED headlights, heated exterior mirrors, manually adjustable front seats, keyless entry, air conditioning, cloth upholstery, and a tilt-and-telescoping steering column.

For consumers that expect to tow with their Encore GX, the SUV is available with the Trailering Package which costs $695. It includes a trailer hitch, a trailering harness, and a trailer hitch bezel. The available Active Lifestyle Package costs $795 and adds a trailer hitch, a trailering harness, a trailer hitch bezel, and a cargo liner. The available Comfort Package ($1,295) brings an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, two-way power lumbar support for the driver’s seat, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a remote start.

2023 Buick Encore GX Sport Touring – MSRP From $28,095

Stepping up to the Sport Touring trim brings 18-inch black wheels, a black grille, LED taillights, roof rails, and an auxiliary electric heater.

Available features include a lot of the same packages as on lower trims. The Experience Buick Package costs $1,695 and includes 19-inch black wheels and a panoramic moonroof.

2023 Buick Encore GX Avenir – MSRP From $33,195

The range-topping Avenir trim brings 19-inch wheels, a unique grille, LED clear taillights, two-way power lumbar support for the front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a six-way power-adjustable passenger’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, remote start, a cabin humidity sensor, and a universal garage door opener.

The Avenir trim is available with a lot of the same optional features as lower trims. The Avenir Convenience Package costs $1,295 and includes a hands-free power liftgate. A rear camera is available with the Avenir Technology Package that’s priced at $1,395.

CarsDirect Tip

While we tend to stay away from range-topping trims, the 2024 Buick Encore GX Avenir makes the most sense in its top-of-the-line trim. The Avenir comes with upscale convenience features and high-tech equipment at a price point that undercuts a lot of range-topping trims from European rivals.

Following a well-worn trail. You wouldn’t know it from a glance, but Buick’s Encore GX is closely related to Chevrolet’s Trailblazer. These compact SUVs share the same floorpan, engines, and transmissions, though Buick’s outer skin certainly looks better. There’s a classy simplicity to the GX’s external appearance, which has been lightly revised for the 2024 model year with a new grille and badge. Bold colors show off the smooth sides to good effect, whereas the shape disappears in black. Choose your paint shade with care.

Mechanical animals. The Encore GX’s mechanicals are shared with other members of the extended GM family, which is a shame. We have little time for the underpowered and underwhelming combination of a 1.2-liter gas engine and CVT transmission fitted to base models. The CVT also saps power from the 1.3-liter turbo unit, which generates a punchier 155 hp and doesn’t feel ready to roll backward attempting a hill while fully loaded. You can make things even better by specifying AWD; this does little for performance or road-holding, but it does swap the CVT in favor of a smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic box. The combined fuel economy in this model drops to 27, compared to 30 for both engines in FWD configuration.

Don’t think for a second that the Encore GX has any off-road intentions. With AWD fitted, it grips well on its standard 18-inch alloy wheels, but inert steering fails to communicate what’s going on. This is a car built primarily for comfort, and it executes this part of the brief well. There’s little road or engine noise thanks to impressive sound deadening, and the ride is refined for a vehicle whose sticker price starts at $28,090.

Priced at a premium. If you’re surprised by that price, you’re not alone. The mechanically identical Trailblazer starts at $24,295, and even a high-end trim with AWD won’t stray far above $30,000. By contrast, you’ll be lucky to get much change out of $35,000 for a flagship Encore GX Avenir. It’s true that this model packs luxury touches like heated leather seats and chrome trim, but it’s impossible to justify those prices when that sort of money unlocks a Volvo XC40 or Lexus UX. We’d also ignore the style-over-substance ST model, whose flat-bottom steering wheel and black trim elements feel unnecessary given the GX’s feeble performance and lackluster driving dynamics.

The best balance between specifications and value is provided by the cheapest Buick Encore GX. It lacks much in the way of toys, but it does sport an 11-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone mirroring beside an eight-inch digital instrument cluster. Safety is catered to with automatic emergency braking, auto high beams, and active lane control. Considering the thick C-pillars (de rigueur on small SUVs at the moment), it’s disappointing that blind spot monitoring is only on the options list. The 2024 model has yet to be crash tested, but with only minor styling tweaks compared to the top-rated 2023 Encore GX, it should perform equally well.

Buick Encore GX

Internal discussion. So far, we’ve established that the Encore GX is expensive, dull to drive, and most compelling in its least luxurious guise as a cost-cutting measure. A lot, therefore, rests on whether it feels like a Buick inside, to which the response is ‘not really’. Then again, that’s not surprising, considering how much of its DNA is shared with other vehicles. This is a compact SUV, and it feels as much internally. There’s space for four adults, but front riders are greeted by disappointingly narrow seats; you really need power adjustment to get comfortable. At least the rear occupants have generous legroom and wide door openings for easier access. Cargo space hovers around 24 cubic feet with the rear seats in position, more than doubling once they’re dropped.

Materials are generally of good quality, and the dash-dominating touchscreen is an impressive feature, but you’ll find all this in Chevrolet's Trailblazer and save a few thousand dollars into the bargain.

Final thoughts. We’ve made several references in this review to other GM products which share the Encore GX’s mechanicals, dashboard, and specifications. That’s not an accident. It’s impossible to review this car in isolation when it’s mechanically identical to far cheaper alternatives like the Trailblazer. The Buick badge and some nicer cabin materials fail to compensate for prices that seem optimistic, to say the least.

Even judging the Encore GX on its own merits, the findings aren’t great. The 1.2-liter engine is feeble enough without being further hindered by a droning CVT, and the only way to get an enjoyable transmission is by speccing the bigger engine and paying extra for AWD that’s superfluous in a car with no off-road prowess. Even the three-year, 36,000-mile warranty seems stingy nowadays, though fuel economy is decent. The upsides to GX ownership – an impressive infotainment screen, quality cabin materials, good levels of safety, and class-leading on-road refinement – aren’t enough to justify this model in a ferociously competitive marketplace.
