Overview

What's New

The 2024 Chevrolet Trax is all new following its absence from the 2023 model year. It is very differently proportioned (for the better), features more technology, packs a new engine, and is even priced lower than its predecessor.

Choosing Your Chevrolet Trax

The Chevrolet Trax is available in five trims; LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and ACTIV, and base prices range from $21,495 to $24,995.

Engine Choices

The Trax features a 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine that is down slightly in peak power versus last generation’s 1.4-liter with 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque but fuel efficiency is up to 28 miles per gallon city, 32 mpg highway, and 30 combined – worth about two hundred dollars in fuel savings per year. Power is routed to the front wheels while all-wheel drive is notably absent from the options list.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The new Trax is 11 inches longer (178.6 inches) overall, rides on a six-inch longer wheelbase (106.3 inches), and sits two inches wider (71.7 inches) than the previous model. It also sits four inches lower, which cuts into the rear passengers’ headroom slightly. Still, its greater overall size is able to provide rear passengers with 38.7 inches of rear legroom, a gain of three inches versus the previous generation, and 54.3 inches of rear shoulder room, about 1.5 inches more. The cargo area is also larger and measures 25.6 cubic feet behind the second row and 54.1 cubic feet with the seat backs folded, comparable to the Honda HR-V.

Safety Features

All Trax trims feature automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, a following distance indicator, lane keep assist, and an HD rearview camera display.

The Driver Confidence Package is just $250 and adds blind spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert. The LT trim additionally offers adaptive cruise control for just $400 more.

The IIHS or NHTSA has not yet rated the 2024 Trax.

Connectivity

The base LS trim is well equipped with an eight-inch HD infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM, a Wi-Fi hotspot, two USB ports (one being a Type C), and a 12-volt power outlet. An 11-inch touchscreen, two additional USB charge ports, and two more speakers (for six total) are featured on the LT-and-up trims where wireless charging is also available through the respective Convenience packages.

For a bit of flair, the blue interior accents can be replaced with yellow for no cost. Proximity entry, heated mirrors, and heated front seats can be had through the LT Convenience Package for $595.

2024 Chevrolet Trax 2RS – MSRP From $24,995

The 2RS trim takes the styling of the 1RS trim and adds 19-inch black machined alloy wheels, synthetic leather seating with red contrast stitching, and the notable features of the LT trim.

The Driver Confidence Package and a Sunroof remain available.

2024 Chevrolet Trax ACTIV – MSRP From $24,995

The ACTIV trim wears unique 18-inch black wheels, black bow-tie emblems, a trim-specific front bumper with a body-color crossbar, and dark chrome lower front and rear bumper trim, and features an eight-way power driver’s seat. The Driver Confidence Package and a Sunroof are still offered.

CarsDirect Tip

The Chevrolet Trax faces an uphill battle to rebuild its brand but this well-equipped and stylish redesign is an impressive step in the right direction. We like the LT trim with the optional Convenience Package because of its long list of desirable features and reasonable price.

No longer a rental-only car. The current Chevrolet Trax didn’t have a lot going for it. While it was affordable and somewhat usable, newer competitors from Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, and Honda ensured the Trax remained at the bottom of the pack. While the Trax appealed to shoppers on a budget, it didn’t have many other positive qualities.

All of that changes with the fully redesigned 2024 Chevrolet Trax. Chevy’s gone back to square one with the new Trax and the changes are extraordinary.

The changes for the new Trax are extensive. The subcompact SUV is longer and wider than the outgoing model it replaces, has an updated design that’s inspired by the midsize Blazer, features a new powertrain that it shares with the TrailBlazer, and has new tech features. One would expect the changes to drive the Trax’s price up, but the 2024 Trax is actually more affordable than the 2022 model with a starting price tag of $21,495 (with destination).

Sporty exterior styling, regardless of trim. Chevrolet offers the Trax in LS, RS, LT, and Activ trims. Regardless of trim, all Trax SUVs wear a bold, sporty design.

The 2024 Trax features slim daytime running lights that sit above vertically oriented headlights, a sharp front fascia, and a large grille that’s split by a horizontal bar. The rear end of the SUV features a modest rear spoiler, r-shaped taillights, and a deep cutout in the liftgate.

While the RS and Activ are pitched as trims, they’re mainly appearance packages that change the way the Trax looks. The RS gets sportier wheels, red badges, red interior accents, and black exterior touches, while the Activ features a unique grille, black badges, and yellow interior accents.

Larger touchscreens that are paired with more impressive tech. With the 2022 Trax, the largest touchscreen that was available was a seven-inch unit. For 2024, even the base LS trim comes with an eight-inch touchscreen. Additionally, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Step up to the LT trim, and Chevrolet includes an 11-inch touchscreen and an eight-inch digital instrument cluster. While the displays don’t offer a high level of customization, the graphics are crisp and they respond quicky to inputs. Plus, the way the central touchscreen is angled toward the driver is a useful touch.

For the Trax’s starting price, we’re also impressed with the SUV’s list of available tech features. The SUV is available with a Wi-Fi hotspot, a wireless charging pad, and four USB ports. On the safety front, the Trax comes with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist as standard. That’s more standard equipment than the outgoing model.

Chevrolet Trax

Loads of interior space. Thanks to the larger body, the 2024 Trax is far roomier than the outgoing model on the inside. Passengers get 39.6 inches of front headroom and 41.9 inches of front legroom, while those in the back have 38.1 inches of rear headroom and 38.7 inches of rear legroom. The latter figure is especially noteworthy, as it makes the Trax one of the roomier options in the segment.

The Trax’s cargo capacity is also impressive for the segment. The SUV has 25.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and a total of 54.1 cubic feet of cargo space.

While the Trax offers plenty of space for passengers, it trails slightly against rivals when it comes to passenger comfort. Most Trax trims are only available with manually adjustable front seats. The front seats themselves aren’t that comfortable, lacking the necessary support to keep passengers in place when cornering. Additionally, fabric is the most readily available upholstery with the Trax, with the 2RS and Activ being the few trims that come with synthetic leather upholstery.

The one area where the Trax really feels like an affordable subcompact SUV is when it comes to interior materials. The Trax’s cabin is lined with low-quality plastics that look and feel like they’ve been built on a budget. Then there’s the buzz of the engine, which is readily apparent from inside the SUV.

A surprisingly enjoyable way to get around. Chevrolet has borrowed the turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine from the TrailBlazer for the Trax. The engine produces 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. Compared to the 2022 Trax, this is a downgrade of 18 hp and 15 lb-ft of torque. Normally, automakers try to give a car more power for a redesign, but Chevrolet has done the opposite. Instead of a CVT like the TrailBlazer, the Trax comes with a six-speed automatic transmission.

On the road, the Trax feels as slow as its figures let on. The Trax isn’t exactly quick in a straight line with the SUV getting to 60 mph in roughly nine seconds in our testing. While the Trax won’t win any drag races, it’s plenty capable enough to get up to speed on the highway and feels more than adequate for city use.

Surprisingly, the Trax impresses on twisty roads. The SUV has minimal body roll and changes directions well. The suspension also handles imperfections in the road well, though the ride is on the firmer side of things. The biggest letdown on a windy road is the six-speed automatic, which fails to deliver shifts promptly and has a manual setting that requires shifting into Low, but it’s better than a CVT.

Final thoughts. What Chevrolet has done with the 2024 Trax is remarkable. The subcompact SUV has gone from being a functional and affordable way to get around to being an SUV that’s actually worth buying. The Trax looks great, handles well, and comes packed with tech features. It’s also spacious and reasonably comfortable. If the Trax had a more powerful engine and all-wheel drive, we think it would be a more well-rounded SUV, but as it sits, it’s miles better than before.

Since the Trax isn’t available with AWD, it competes against other FWD-only SUVs like the Hyundai Venue, Kia Soul, and Nissan Kicks. The Soul comes with a more powerful 147-hp engine, offers up to 62.1 cubic feet of total cargo space, has a roomy interior, and has an equally distinctive exterior design.

The Nissan Kicks doesn’t have the same large touchscreens or horsepower rating as the Trax, but has great fuel economy figures, a competitive list of standard features, and 25.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats.
