2024 Ford Explorer Changes

The 2024 Ford Explorer carries into the 2024 model year with no changes, however, the hybrid powertrain is being entirely allocated for non-retail fleet purchases. The 2025 model is expected to debut soon and will bring a number of exterior styling updates and interior enhancements.

Choosing Your 2024 Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer is offered in eight different trim levels, Base, XLT, ST-Line, Limited, Timberline, ST, King Ranch, and Platinum. Base prices for the Explorer range from $38,445 to $57,310.

2024 Ford Explorer Engine Options

There are two available engines in the 2024 Ford Explorer. The 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is standard on most trims and develops 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The ST, King Ranch, and Platinum trims feature a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 that pus out 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. All engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Rear-wheel drive is standard while all-wheel drive is a $2,000 option on all trims except for the off-road-themed Timberline trim where it is standard. That trim also receives a limited-slip rear differential.

Ford Explorer

2024 Ford Explorer Fuel Economy

The most efficient Explorer (four-cylinder, rear-wheel drive) returns an EPA-estimated 24 miles per gallon combined and the more powerful V6 earns a 21 MPG combined rating. Adding all-wheel drive lessens those ratings by one point and is expected to add about $500 to the annual fuel bill.

2024 Ford Explorer Towing Capacity

The Explorer offers towing ratings of up to 5,600 pounds when fitted with the V6 and 5,300 when equipped with the four-cylinder and the towing package.

2024 Ford Explorer Dimensions & Cargo Capacity

The Explorer stretches to 198.8 inches in length which puts it about a foot less than the next-size-up Expedition, and can seat up to eight when specified with the second-row bench seat. Those in the second row are provided 39 inches of legroom while those in the far back deal with 32.2 inches. Cargo capacity measures 18.2 cubic feet behind the third-row seats, 47.9 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 87.8 cubic feet with both rear rows folded flat.

Ford Explorer

2024 Ford Explorer Safety

The base trim features automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams. The XLT and ST offer adaptive cruise control with lane centering, evasive steering assist, and traffic sign recognition while all other trims include the equipment as standard. The identical 2023 model is an IIHS 2023 Top Safety Pick.

2024 Ford Explorer Technology

All Explorer trims are well-equipped with infotainment and connected services. The base trim wears an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM compatibility as well as FordPass Connect with a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. The XLT trim adds to the base trim’s two front USB ports and the ST-Line, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum additionally include a wireless charging pad as standard. The King Ranch and Platinum trims feature a 110V AC power outlet.

The standard trim’s sound system with six speakers is upgraded to a 12-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system in the ST-Line and Limited trims while 14 speakers and an even more powerful unit are featured on the King Ranch and Platinum trims. Those two trims also receive a portrait-style 10.1-inch touchscreen protruding from the center of the dash.

2024 Ford Explorer Trims & Prices

2024 Ford Explorer - MSRP From $38,455

Build & Price >

The base Explorer trim features LED headlights and tail lights, black mirror caps, door handles, grille inserts, 18-inch alloy wheels, a capless fuel filler, and a power tailgate. Inside, the crossover includes cloth seats, a three-zone automatic climate control system, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a 4.2-inch driver information display, and power locks and windows (with one-touch up for the front windows).

2024 Ford Explorer XLT - MSRP From $40,265

Build & Price >

The XLT trim will be the starting trim for most consumers as it includes more equipment but most notably, offers more choices. The exterior is dressed up with body-color painted door handles, chrome trim in the grille and along the lower side body cladding, signature-pattern LED daytime running lights, and black roof rails. Proximity allows easy access to the interior that gains upgraded cloth material seats with heating for the front row, a power passenger seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a larger 6.5-inch driver information display, and captains chairs for the second row.

The XLT High Package ($3,540) offers synthetic leather seating surfaces, a heated steering wheel, an eight-way power passenger seat, remote engine start, LED fog lights, and a faux silver-painted skid plate. With the High Package selected, the Technology Package ($2,845) is available to order to add a surround-view camera, front parking sensors, upgraded audio, the Tow Package, and power folding mirrors with integrated turn signals. The High Package also opens the door to the Sport Appearance Package ($1,995) which brings 20-inch gray wheels, gray-painted exterior trim (in place of chrome), dual exhaust tips, and contrast stitching on the seats and door panels. It cannot be combined with the Technology Package.

2024 Ford Explorer ST-Line - MSRP From $48,595

Build & Price >

The ST-Line is mostly about style with its 20-inch wheels with painted pockets, black mesh grille inserts, mirror caps, and body trim, darkened headlight and tail light housings, fog lights, dual exhaust outlets, a sport flat-bottom steering wheel with heating and red stitching, suede-like seat inserts. A surround-view monitor, upgraded audio, rain-sensing wipers, and acoustic front-side glass are among the notable feature enhancements for the ST-Line trim.

2024 Ford Explorer Limited - MSRP From $49,115

Build & Price >

The Limited trim builds on the style of the XLT but wears significantly more bright work for the grille mesh and inserts, 20-inch wheels, exhaust tips, door handle inserts, and roof rails. The interior is treated with leather-trimmed seats with ventilated front seats and heated second-row seats, second-row sunshades, ambient lighting, a surround-view monitor, and an upgraded sound system. The Limited High Package ($840) includes a hands-free power tailgate, position memory for the driver, a power-adjustable steering column, and power-folding third-row seats. The Limited Technology Package is then offered for $995 to add the larger infotainment display.

2024 Ford Explorer Timberline - MSRP From $51,025

Build & Price >

The Timberline trim is more tailored to the off-road adventure crowd without straying too far from the mainstream market. Tangerine highlights and unique Timberline logos are joined by a unique gray grille design, darkened headlight and taillight housings, a unique front fascia with additional clearance, steel skid plates, off-road-tuned shocks, and 18-inch high-gloss black wheels. Inside, the synthetic leather seats feature tangerine contrast stitching, heating for the front row, eight-way power adjustability for the passenger seat, a heated steering wheel, a surround-view monitor, and more Timberline logos mark the most notable differences.

2024 Ford Explorer ST - MSRP From $51,700

Build & Price >

The ST trim provides more performance than the other trims. It takes the looks of the ST-Line and adds a sport-tuned suspension, upgraded powertrain cooling performance, quad chrome exhaust tips, paddle shifters, perforated leather seats, ST emblems inside and out, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The ST High Package ($5,890) brings performance brakes with red-painted calipers, a surround-view monitor, 21-inch wheels, and a premium sound system.

2024 Ford Explorer King Ranch - MSRP From $56,765

Build & Price >

The King Ranch trim level brings a familiar southwest flair to the Explorer and builds on the features included with the Limited trim. There are unique leather seats, open-pore wood trim, and trim-exclusive wheels and grille designs. The items of the Limited High package are included.

2024 Ford Explorer Platinum - MSRP From $57,310

Build & Price >

The Platinum trim sits atop the many levels of the Ford Explorer and is very well equipped as one might expect. Satin aluminum finishes inside and out, 21-inch wheels, adaptive headlights, special diamond-patterned perforated leather seats, and floor mats with unique stitching patterns are included while the Premium Technology Package ($1,295) can be added for massaging front seats.

CarsDirect Tip

The Explorer offers many flavors with its extensive trim range. We like the XLT trim with the optional safety package for its overall sense of value (and space) and included creature comforts.

2024 Ford Explorer Can Deliver Everything But Value

The 2024 Ford Explorer puts forth traditional SUV values with its rear-drive architecture, muscular styling, strong engines, and room for the family. Buyers have a wide choice of trims and equipment to build an Explorer that's just right for their priorities.

That's not to say the Explorer can satisfy every family's transportation needs. The Explorer's attributes come at a cost that deletes value from the equation, and its disappointing efficiency only adds to the expense.

2024 Ford Explorer Packs Power And Then Some

The Explorer starts with a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a smooth 10-speed automatic transmission, the 2.3-liter takes the Explorer to 60 mph in less than 7 seconds and can tow up to 5,300 pounds.

The upper trims — ST, Platinum, King Ranch — carry a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 good for 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. The sprint to 60 mph takes 5.5 seconds with the V6, and the towing capacity increases to 5,600 pounds. All-wheel drive is standard on the outdoorsy Timberline trim and available on all others for $2,000.

Ford Explorer

The Explorer handles with more composure than SUVs of similar size, and body lean is minimal.

Ford no longer offers a hybrid powerplant in the Explorer, which is no great loss since the hybrid didn't offer enough fuel savings to justify its cost. The standard engine is EPA-rated at 21 miles per gallon city, 28 mpg highway, and 24 combined. The combined rating eases to 23 mpg with AWD. The V6 manages 18/26/21 mpg (city/highway/combined), which also drops by 1 mpg combined with AWD. With either engine, the Explorer trails most competitors in fuel economy.

2024 Ford Explorer Makes Room For The Crew

The 2024 Explorer seats seven across three rows, or six with the available second-row captain’s chairs. A power driver seat is standard, and all but the base trim comes with heated power front seats. Front passengers enjoy comfortable seating and fine visibility. The relatively low seats and dashboard impart a car-like feel.

The second row offers plenty of legroom and folds easily. Two adults can squeeze into the third row, but it's best left to children.

Behind the third row, the Explorer offers 18.2 cubic feet of cargo space and two storage bins under the floor. Folding the second row opens up 47.9 cubic feet. With both rear rows down, the Explorer can handle up to 87.9 cubic feet of cargo. Every model features a power liftgate.

How Safe Is The 2024 Ford Explorer?

The Explorer is an IIHS Top Safety Pick and earns a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA. Standard driver assistance features include lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, driver alertness monitoring, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

Advancing through the trim levels brings a bundle of worthy upgrades like evasive steering assist, rear emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and surround-view cameras.

How Much Does The 2024 Ford Explorer Cost?

The Explorer's base MSRP starts at $38,275 including destination. Most buyers upgrade to at least the XLT, which comes to about $44,000 when equipped with popular options like remote start, a heated steering wheel, and 20-inch wheels. AWD is standard on the Timberline, which is reflected in its $50,000+ starting price. The line-topping King Ranch, with its turbocharged V6 and bespoke interior, starts around $58,000 with AWD.

Compared to key competitors, the Explorer is pricey no matter how it's equipped. The option packages, while brimming with features, are rather expensive and can easily push the final price beyond reason. In terms of value, the Explorer doesn't measure up to the standards of this class.

Is The 2024 Ford Explorer A Good SUV?

The Explorer brings strong credentials to the table, including powerful engines, generous interior room, and a strong safety record. Fuel economy ranks near the bottom of this class, which would be easier to forgive if the Explorer provided a semblance of value. Buyers have to decide whether the Explorer's virtues justify the cost.

2024 Ford Explorer Alternatives

The 2024 Ford Explorer completes with other three-row SUVs like the redesigned Chevrolet Traverse, which has more cargo space but an unproven engine. The Honda Pilot scores on comfort but is challenged on style. Kia Telluride offers more features for the money, though it's no better in efficiency.
