Mercedes-Benz plans on making some pretty big changes to its model lineup in the coming years. In addition to furthering its commitment toward EVs, the luxury German automaker is also consolidating and reshuffling several of its existing models. One addition to the Mercedes lineup we'll be seeing is an EV variant of the GLC-Class compact SUV. Reports on the upcoming EV are still preliminary. but here's what we know so far.

We haven't seen what the GLC EV will look like yet, but according to Automotive News, the next electric Mercedes SUV will feature a more rounded design than the gas-powered GLC model that's already on sale. We'd also expect the LED-clad black "grille" that the current EQ lineup features on the front end. It's still unclear if it will be offered as an SUV coupe like the gas-powered GLC-Class is.

Details on the interior are more scarce, but we expect the GLC EV to sport a cabin design reminiscent of both the standard GLC-Class and the existing EQ models. The current GLC features an 11.9" touchscreen that acts as both the infotainment system and controls all of the HVAC. We're not sure if Mercedes will opt to put their bonkers 56" Megascreen in the GLC EV, but we reckon it won't be standard equipment. Plentiful ambient lighting and an overall futuristic design are reasonable expectations as well.

Powertrain details are still next to non-existent, but we expect the GLC EV to be offered in both rear and all-wheel drive. AN reports that the Mercedes' next electric SUV will feature a driving range of about 300 miles.

Mercedes hasn't offered an official release date for the GLC EV yet, but it's expected to arrive at dealers next year. Pricing for the gas-powered GLC-Class currently starts at $48,250, but we'd expect a significant premium for the EV.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class EV will compete with the Genesis GV70 Electrified, Tesla Model Y, and the Cadillac LYRIQ.
