Overview

What's New

After receiving a midcycle refresh for 2023, the 2024 Subaru Legacy isn’t expected to arrive with any major changes. This isn’t a bad thing, as last year’s refresh was extensive, bringing a new look, a more powerful turbocharged engine for the Sport trim, and more available safety features. With the changes, the Legacy is more competitive in the midsize segment and continues to be one of the few sedans in the segment that comes with standard all-wheel drive.

Choosing Your Subaru Legacy

Subaru offers the 2024 Legacy in five trims: base, Premium, Limited, Sport, and Touring XT. Pricing for the Legacy base trim starts at $25,985 (prices include destination) and goes up to $39,285 for the Touring XT.

Engine Choices

There are two available engines for the Legacy. The sedan starts off with a four-cylinder engine while stepping up to the Sport and Touring XT brings a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. In traditional Subaru fashion, the Legacy comes standard with AWD. Both engines are paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission.

The turbocharged engine represents a hefty increase in performance over the base four-cylinder and doesn’t bring down the sedan’s fuel economy by a wide margin, either. Our major gripe with the turbocharged engine is that it’s only available on the two highest trim levels, which are far more expensive than sedans with the base engine.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The 2024 Subaru Legacy is classified as a midsize sedan and offers seating for up to five people. The Legacy has a roomy cabin with 37.2 inches of rear headroom and 39.5 inches of rear legroom. The sedan’s truck has 15.1 cubic feet of cargo space.

Safety Features

Even the standard Legacy comes with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam assist. Rear cross-traffic alert and blind spot monitoring are optional on the Premium trim through a $1,000 package.

Moving up to the Limited, Sport, or Touring XT brings reverse automatic emergency braking. Driver attention monitoring is available on the Limited trim through a $2,060 package and standard on higher trims.

Connectivity

The base trim is the only one in the Legacy lineup to come with Subaru’s dual-screen infotainment system. The system includes seven-inch upper and lower touchscreens, two USB ports, four audio speakers, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. An 11.6-inch touchscreen that’s vertically oriented is standard starting on the Premium trim. Features included with the larger touchscreen include a Wi-Fi hotspot, six audio speakers, two rear USB ports, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Navigation is optional on the Premium trim through a $2,595 package and is standard starting on the Sport trim. The Limited and Touring trims come with a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, while a wireless charging pad is available starting on the Premium trim as a dealer-installed accessory that costs $347.

Subaru Legacy

2024 Subaru Legacy Base – MSRP From $25,985

The entry-level base trim comes equipped with basic features. The trim comes with 17-inch wheels, LED headlights, manually adjustable front seats, cloth upholstery, automatic climate control, a 4.2-inch driver information display, and power windows.

2024 Subaru Legacy Premium – MSRP From $28,285

The Premium is a better starting point for most buyers. It adds a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, windshield wiper de-icer, and rear air vents.

The first optional package for the Premium costs $1,000 and includes keyless entry, push-button start, and LED fog lights. For an extra $1,595, there’s a similar bundle that adds a power moonroof.

2024 Subaru Legacy Limited – MSRP From $33,035

Stepping up to the Limited trim is when things start to feel more upscale. The trim comes with 18-inch wheels, LED fog lights, keyless entry, a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, push-button start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, memory settings for the driver’s seat, a power-adjustable passenger’s seat, a universal garage door opener, heated rear seats, and leather upholstery.

A power moonroof and a heated steering wheel are available through an optional package that’s priced at $2,060.

2024 Subaru Legacy Sport – MSRP From $34,495

In addition to the more powerful turbocharged engine, the Sport trim also comes with unique 18-inch wheels, a sunroof, a sport-tuned suspension, a rear spoiler, a unique grille, special exterior trim, sport cloth upholstery, red interior stitching, and a heated steering wheel.

2024 Subaru Legacy Touring XT – MSRP From $39,285

The range-topping Touring XT comes fully loaded with Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, chrome exterior trim, power-folding mirrors, and a front-view camera.

CarsDirect Tip

For drivers that don’t need the extra performance from the turbocharged engine, the 2024 Subaru Legacy Premium is a strong value option. It adds popular convenience features that are sure to be enjoyed for a reasonable increase in pricing. A family-friendly sedan that costs under $30,000 makes Legacy’s sedate performance easier to live with.

Advanced Safety Tech Comes Standard. Subaru has an excellent track record with safety. The Japanese automaker has a number of models that have won an IIHS award and offers an extensive list of standard safety features on most of its lineup. The 2024 Subaru Legacy doesn’t stray far from what the automaker does best.

The Legacy comes with Subaru’s EyeSight suite of advanced safety features and some other extras to offer a robust list of safety features. The sedan comes with things that we expect to see in a midsize sedan like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist, but beats most of its rivals with adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam assist, and a head-up display. In order to get blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, shoppers have to move up to the Premium trim.

In the IIHS tests, the Legacy did well enough to be named a Top Safety Pick, losing out on the organization’s highest award because of its Acceptable score in the updated side crash test. The NHTSA gave the midsize Legacy an overall safety rating of five stars.

Standard AWD For All. While some automakers have introduced optional all-wheel-drive systems for their midsize sedans, Subaru continues to offer the 2024 Legacy with standard AWD. It’s a noteworthy option that gives the Legacy a leg up on the competition. Drivers looking for a midsize sedan that can tackle inclement weather will find the Legacy to be a robust choice.

While seeing standard AWD on the Legacy is a nice touch that’s sure to be appreciated by consumers, the Legacy’s performance is lackluster at best. The standard engine in the Legacy is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. Compared to other midsize sedans in the segment, the Legacy isn’t far down on power, but the way the engine and continuously variable automatic transmission interact results in listless acceleration.

The available turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is a major upgrade. It’s rated at 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. While the engine is also paired with a CVT, it has enough power to compensate for the transmission’s deficits. Unfortunately, Subaru limits the availability of the turbo engine to the Sport and Touring XT trims, which are pricey.

Subaru Legacy

Adult-Friendly Cabin. The world may be in love with SUVs, but the Legacy makes a strong case for why drivers shouldn’t make the switch just yet. The midsize sedan offers a generous amount of passenger space in both rows and has one of the roomier cabins in the segment. Passengers will find that the Legacy offers comfortable seats with a decent amount of cushioning.

In the back, two adults will be able to sit side by side comfortably with 39.5 inches of rear legroom, 57.4 inches of shoulder room, and 54.8 inches of hip room. These are roomy figures for the segment and result in a spacious sedan.

While the Legacy offers plenty of interior space, its cargo capacity falls slightly below average for the class. The Legacy’s trunk offers up to 15.1 cubic feet of cargo space, which is behind segment leaders. It’s still enough for groceries and a few carry-on bags, but if you need something with a large trunk, you’ll want to look elsewhere.

Opt For The Larger Touchscreen. Subaru offers the Legacy with two different infotainment systems. While the base system is easier and more intuitive to use, it looks dated. The optional infotainment system looks far more appealing but is trickier to interact with.

The Legacy starts off with two seven-inch touchscreens that are integrated into a single trim piece on the dashboard but are positioned in a stacked layout. The trim piece surrounding the screens looks cheap and the graphics on the screens look outdated. Thankfully, there are a few physical controls that make the system easy to use, but the dual-screen setup misses the bar from an aesthetic standpoint.

The base Legacy is the only trim in the lineup to come with the standard infotainment system. All other Legacy sedans come with an 11.6-inch touchscreen that’s vertically oriented and takes up a lot more space on the center console. The larger infotainment system retains a few controls, though the driver is expected to scroll through a lot more menus to control functions. While it’s harder to use, the 11.6-inch infotainment system has crisper graphics and looks a lot better on the dashboard.

Final Thoughts. The 2024 Subaru Legacy isn’t as exciting or as luxurious as some of the competition in the midsize segment, but with standard AWD, a large available touchscreen, and a roomy interior, it remains a compelling choice. The Legacy’s excellent list of safety features and peppy turbocharged engine also make it a standout point. While the Legacy is a competitive choice in the class, it trails rivals with its dull handling, underpowered base engine, and distracting infotainment system.

In comparison, Honda continues to lead the way forward in the midsize segment with the Accord. The perennial favorite leads the segment with a high-end design, an efficient hybrid powertrain, a roomy interior, and high-tech features. The Hyundai Sonata is another great choice in the class. The Sonata boasts a premium design, is available with a 290-hp engine, is offered with an efficient hybrid powertrain, has a premium interior, and has an easy-to-use infotainment system.
