Model Preview
Volkswagen is giving the 2024 Atlas a significant refresh, which shouldn’t be a surprise since the Atlas has been around since the 2018 model year. Here’s what we know about VW’s updated flagship SUV so far.
Perhaps the most notable exterior change would be the new front light bar, which VW calls Adaptive Front-lighting System. AFS creates an unbroken stream of LEDs between the headlights and is joined by LED daytime running lights on all Atlas models above the base trim. The front of the Atlas also receives a revised grille design akin to the smaller Taos.
Also new for 2024 is a larger spoiler and an entirely revamped set of wheel designs. Modified grilles and vents further complete the look, as does an illuminated VW logo, which is again limited to non-base trims.
We'll email you as soon as the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas becomes available.
VW hasn’t limited updates to just the Atlas’ exterior. The revised cabin now sports a soft-touch leatherette-trimmed dash and center console, 30 colors of available ambient lighting, and upgraded trim and storage space throughout. Higher trims will feature quilted leather seats. Ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel are now standard features, as well as Voice Control and automatic climate control.
On the tech front, a 12” floating infotainment screen is now the focal point of the dashboard, and the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro 10.25” digital dash is now standard on all trims. The Atlas will also feature up to eight USB-C ports, wireless App-Connect, and wireless charging.
In addition to the interior amenities, the IQ.DRIVE driver assistance suite is now standard. It features lane centering, hands-on semi-automatic capability, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Adaptive Cruise Control and a head-up display are optional extras.
The most substantial difference between the 2024 Atlas and the model currently on sale might be the powertrain. The current model offers a choice between a 235 hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and a 276 hp V6. The optional engine featured Volkswagen’s innovative staggered VR6 layout that they’ve been using in their larger displacement engines for decades.
The 2024 Atlas ditches both the base engine and the venerable VR6 for a new 269-hp four-cylinder turbo. Other performance info has yet to be divulged, but we do know the 2024 Atlas’ towing capacity will remain at 5,000 lbs.
