Model Preview

For Nissan, the Maxima nameplate is a legendary one. Maxima has been in Nissan’s history back to when Nissan was Datsun and was used as early as 1982. Rumors and reports have indicated that Nissan is looking to discontinue the gas-powered Maxima and introduce an all-electric successor. Here’s what we know and don’t know about the upcoming electric Maxima.

Based on initial reports, Maxima’s electric successor is expected to be an “elevated sports sedan.” That makes it sound like Nissan is either going to make the Maxima an SUV or a sedan with a tall ride height like the new Toyota Crown. We expect the electric vehicle to feature Nissan’s shield grille that’s similar to the one on the Ariya.

Nissan hasn’t provided any details on the EV’s cabin. We expect the vehicle to have a modern design, large screens, and few minimal controls. We wouldn’t be surprised to see the EV share a lot of design elements with the current Ariya.

On the powertrain front, it would make a lot of sense for Nissan to use the Ariya’s powertrain for Maxima’s successor. The Ariya is available with two powertrains that include a single electric motor that makes 214 horsepower and a dual-motor layout that’s rated at up to 389 hp. The SUV is available with a 63-kWh and an 87-kWh battery pack with a range starting off at 216 miles and going up to 304 miles.

The electric car should come with Nissan’s latest safety features, including its ProPilot Assist 2.0 system that can handle most driving tasks on the highway.

Pricing & Release Date

Nissan hasn’t released any official information on when the electric car to replace the Maxima will come out. Reports claim that production could begin in 2025. We could see the EV arrive as early as the end of 2025 or 2026.

Sedans aren't as popular as they once were, and electric sedans are only just starting to gain traction, but some likely competitors for the upcoming Maxima could include the Tesla Model 3, Hyundai IONIQ 6, BMW i4, and Toyota Mirai.
