What To Expect

The 6-Series served as BMW's range-topping grand tourer off and on from 1976 to 2019. The model is reportedly rejoining the lineup after a seven-year hiatus and will be taking the place of both the 8-Series and the internal-combustion-powered 4-Series models. Here's what we know about the all-new 2026 BMW 6-Series so far.

Per Automotive News, the 6-Series marque is set to return to the BMW lineup in 2026. It is expected to assume the place of the 8-Series atop the lineup, which is set to be discontinued in 2026 due to poor sales. Gas-powered versions of the 4-Series are also expected to be axed in 2028, leaving the next-gen 6-Series to help fill the void. The 6-Series has lived on in Gran Turismo guise in international markets but has been absent from the US since the 2019 model year.

The new 6-Series will reportedly be based on BMW's Cluster Architecture platform, which can support gas-only, hybrid, and electric powertrains. We wouldn't be surprised if all 2026 6-Series engine options feature some form of electrification, and we're assuming there will be an iteration of the brand's 3.0L straight-six involved. Both a coupe and convertible model of the 2026 6-Series are expected to be offered. There's a good chance we'll see a four-door Gran Coupe model join the lineup as well.

2026 BMW 6-Series Price & Release Date

We're expecting the 2026 6-Series to fall between the incumbent 4 and 8-Series in terms of price, granted there's a $40,000 price gap between the two coupes. The last iteration of the 6-Series sported a $71,895 starting price in 2019, which works out to about $88,000 adjusted for inflation. We'll have a better grasp of its pricing once more details are confirmed.

The next-gen 6-Series will reportedly begin production in July of 2026. We may see it debut as a 2027 model, but we're tentatively referring to it as a 2026 model for the time being.

The 2026 BMW 6-Series' most direct competitor will be the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, with the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, Porsche Panamera, and Audi RS7 as more indirect competition.
