What's New
The all-new Tonale represents a downward venture for Alfa Romeo, moving the Italian marque into the subcompact crossover category for the first time. The first new Alfa for five years shares much of its DNA with the established Fiat 500X and the Jeep Renegade, though its plug-in hybrid architecture delivers far more impressive performance than its siblings.
Choosing Your Alfa Romeo Tonale
With a single engine, transmission, and drivetrain configuration, your only choice regarding the Tonale is which of three trim levels to pick. Sprint models start at $44,590 including destination, while Ti will set you back $47,250 and Veloce retails at $51,290.
Engine Choices
Every Tonale is powered by a 1.3-liter turbocharged plug-in hybrid engine. In tandem with an electric motor, it produces a total of 285 horsepower and 347 lb-ft of torque, fed to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.
Fuel economy data has yet to be released, though Alfa Romeo claims the Tonale can travel for over 30 miles on electric power alone.
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
Cargo capacity for the five-seater Tonale stands at 22.9 cu ft with the rear seats in place, and 50.5 cu ft once they’re dropped.
Safety Features
Every Tonale is packed with active and passive safety, including seven airbags, automatic LED high-beam headlamps, rain-sensing wipers plus front and rear park assist. Blind spot and cross-traffic detection are standard alongside enhanced adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, a remote engine start system, and traffic sign recognition. Active driving and parking assistance can be specified on higher trims as part of a standalone option pack.
Connectivity
The ubiquitous Stellantis Uconnect 5 interface powers the Tonale’s 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster sits behind a compact steering wheel. The infotainment system includes smartphone mirroring, satellite/HD radio, and twin USB ports, alongside wireless device charging. A basic six-speaker audio system is standard across the range, and you’ll need to raid the options list on Ti or Veloce models to benefit from a 14-speaker Harman Kardon alternative.
2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Sprint – MSRP From $44,590
Priced equivalent to top-line subcompact SUVs from rival brands, the entry-level Tonale packs plenty of equipment. It rides on 18-inch silver wheels with privacy glass, power-folding heated outside mirrors, and automatic lights. The cabin features a dual-zone climate and a heated steering wheel, while the heated front seats have eight-way power adjustment including four-way power lumbar.
There are no packages on Sprint models.
2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Ti – MSRP From $47,250
It’s hard to justify the step up to Ti models in isolation, with only modest cabin differences like black diamond-cut wheels and rear floor mats. Mechanical improvements include adjustable dampers and a power liftgate.
The main advantage of buying a Ti model over a Sprint is the introduction of options packs. Ventilated and perforated leather seats can be added for $1,500, or bundled in with a Harman Kardon audio system for an additional $1,000. The $1,850 Active Assist Package handles steering and braking on highways, as well as bringing a surround-view camera system, parking assist in all directions, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce – MSRP From $51,290
Veloce models receive various aesthetic improvements, such as larger 19-inch wheels and monochrome Alfa Romeo wheel caps. Aluminum door sills welcome you into a cabin with matching aluminum pedals, while the seats are clad in Alcantara and paddle shifters sit behind the steering wheel.
Packages remain as described on Ti models.
While no Tonale could be described as good value, Ti models allow a degree of customization, providing your budget can stretch to $50,000 once a package or two is added.
