Many Flavors. The standard A4 is a fastball straight down the middle. It’s extremely competent as a luxury sedan, but its style is very conservative without much flair. An upgraded trim called “45” provides an extra 60 horsepower, adaptive suspension, and optional sport seats.

The S4 is a step above the 45 with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with 349 horsepower, while higher trim models get cool performance parts like a torque-vectoring rear differential. However, despite the S4’s 4.4 second 0-60 time, but compared to rivals, it may seem understated and a bit emotionless.

The oddball of the lineup is the A4 Allroad with its rough and ready plastic body cladding and a raised suspension. While not exactly something we’d start exploring Moab with, it does raise confidence in its ability to navigate grass lots at the local polo field.

Standard All-Wheel Drive. Audi’s biggest schtick since the 1980s has been its inclusion of their Quattro all-wheel-drive system in their passenger cars. The 2022 A4 line is no exception with standard AWD throughout the entire lineup.

Unlike many other AWD systems on the market that are based on a front-wheel-drive model with power sent to the rear wheels as needed, the system in the A4 is rear-wheel based. About 40% of the power is sent to the front wheels in normal conditions, making it more suited for sporty driving.

Well-Equipped. The A4 is very well equipped for its segment with its standard real leather upholstery and wood trim, Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay compatibility, and even a sunroof. Most rivals come standard with synthetic leather upholstery and no sunroof, while arch-rival BMW charges a yearly subscription plan to keep Apple CarPlay active in the vehicle.

Jumping up to the A4 Premium Plus model includes more tech like adaptive cruise control, a digital instrument cluster, and a 360-degree camera system, while the top Prestige version comes with LED headlights, navigation, a heads-up display, and premium Bang & Olufsen audio.

Stellar Safety. According to the IIHS and NHTSA, the A4 line is one of the safest cars on the road. All models received a five-star rating and designation as a Top Safety Pick+ when equipped with the LED headlight option. Additionally, the A4 offers excellent visibility from its cockpit, something that is becoming rarer and rarer each model year.

In terms of active safety, the A4 line includes automatic emergency braking and lane departure warnings as standard. Higher trim levels include adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist.

Final thoughts. The Audi A4 line may not be the flashiest of the compact luxury sedan segment, but it comes well-equipped with loads of luxury and tech features and a wide array of styles. From the basic A4 to the performance-oriented S4 and the rugged Allroad, the A4 is a solid choice for anyone; competent at everything but not exactly a standout at anything.

Those looking for a luxury compact sedan with more pizzazz should look to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which has a more styled interior and exterior that looks and feels more special. The BMW 3-Series line offers a sportier experience, although the price can climb quickly as you travel up the trim levels and select options. However, this segment is quite deep and worth exploring, with further options like the Cadillac CT4, Lexus IS, and Genesis G70.

If you’re looking for a wagon like the Allroad, your choices are a bit more limited. There isn’t really another luxury wagon at this price point, although there are some like the Mercedes E-Class at the mid-sized level. The biggest competitor to the Allroad may be the Subaru Outback, which even at top trim levels lacks the refinement of Audi’s interior and drive quality.
