A six-month car lease is not a commonly used option, but it may be ideal for some depending on their situation. So, when should you consider a six-month car lease?

Why Consider a Short Lease?

Typically the best time to consider a six-month-long car lease is when you find yourself in a situation that is most likely temporary. School, traveling, or living out of town for work, a temporary financial situation, a temporary job, military deployment, or other special considerations are the best times to consider a six-month-long car lease.

Some people may sign a six-month lease for a car with the intention of buying it, but they first want to make sure that the vehicle is exactly what they are looking for. This short-term car lease provides them with the opportunity to essentially test drive the car with no obligation for a relatively long period of time.

Leasing a car for six months may not be the best option, in fact renting may be a better option for your current situation depending on the cost and how much you are required to travel.

Short-term leases work a bit differently than longer ones. Short-term leasers are generally lease-takeovers, or lease-assumers, taking over a lease from another when they are through with the car, taking over the payments for the remaining portion of the lease.

Getting a lease for only six months may be ideal for you, or not. It is important to remember they work differently than longer leases, but if you find yourself in a temporary situation it may be something you should look into.

Leasing and Bad Credit

Leasing a car isn't like buying one with an auto loan. In leasing, you're only paying for the depreciation and taxes for the time you're using the vehicle. This means a short-term lease ultimately costs you a little less than leasing for longer. However, it could be difficult to qualify for a lease with a six-month term. These are typically reserved for people with top-tier credit scores.

If you don't have a good credit score, it's not impossible to lease a car, but it might take a few more steps than someone with better credit.
