There are many reasons why someone might choose to buy a car without a license, but there are several obstacles if you plan on financing a vehicle and don’t have a driver’s license.

Alternatives

A valid photo ID is one requirement you must meet to finance a vehicle. Most car buyers use their driver’s license, but if a license isn't available, a state-issued photo ID might work. This may allow you to finance a car under your name, but it's a big “may,” and is dependent on the lender’s requirements.

The Big Issue

Not having a driver’s license becomes a bigger issue when trying to register a vehicle. States require owners to register their cars with the state’s department of motor vehicles or secretary of state’s office. To register a car, there must be a license plate associated with it. The problem here is that the person registering the car must have a valid driver’s license in their name that also must match the name on the title.

There is a way around this, though. If you paid cash, your car can be titled in someone else’s namesuch as a parent or spousewho has a valid driver’s license. The downside to all of this is that the vehicle now legally belongs to whoever is on the title and not you.

Bottom Line

It’s important to understand the disadvantages of buying a car without a valid driver’s license. Just make sure you’re aware of all the pitfalls before you decide to go this route.
