Many consumers may be facing eviction with the recent lift of the eviction ban that was instituted in September of 2020. If you're facing eviction, you may be left without a permanent address, which can make it tough to qualify for a car loan.

Buying a Car Without an Address

If you don’t have a permanent address, or you’re facing eviction, it could knock you out of the running for an auto loan.

When you’re applying for vehicle financing, one of the things that nearly every lender asks for is proof of residency. This typically involves having your current address on your driver’s license, and a recent utility bill in your name as proof that you live there. In some cases, a lender can accept a recent bank statement as proof of residency.

For bad credit auto financing, a lender may require that you’ve lived in the same area or address for around six months to a year, minimum, to be eligible for a car loan.

Auto lenders require your home address because it’s tied to the vehicle and the loan. Since the car is the lender’s asset until you pay off the loan, they need to know where the vehicle is going to reside.

If you’re not financing and are paying cash for your next vehicle, then you’re still going to need an address to register your car. It doesn’t have to be a residential address, but it must be legitimate. The address you list on your registration is for Department of Motor Vehicle/Secretary of State communications (such as registration renewal).

What if I Don’t Have a Permanent Address?

Some people move around for employment a lot, such as contractors, construction employees, and traveling nurses, and sometimes don’t have a permanent address. In cases such as this, an auto lender may be willing to work with you. But they're still likely to ask for proof of employment in the form of check stubs, tax returns, and possibly bank statements.

If you’re a W-2 employee, though, and your work doesn’t require you to move frequently, then the lender is likely to require a permanent address and proof that you reside there.

Applying for a Car Loan After Eviction

In most cases, you’re likely to find that a permanent address is a requirement when you apply for a car loan. If you were recently evicted or are about to be evicted, it may be wise to apply for a car loan once you have a permanent residence for a higher chance of eligibility.

Keep in mind that all lenders vary, and if you have good credit they may not be as stringent with residency requirements. If you have bad credit and are working with a subprime lender signed up with a special finance dealership, then expect to need a permanent address.
