Certain rules apply when buyers with bad credit head to a dealership to choose a vehicle. The lender sets these rules when they speak with the dealership finance manager.

Who Determines Vehicle Selection?

Ultimately, vehicle choice is up to the consumer, but as a credit-challenged buyer needing financing, what the lender’s willing to finance determines the selection. As part of the approval process, the lender will set a maximum amount financed and the dealer will present the buyer with a list of vehicles from their inventory that meet the requirements. The borrower can test drive one or all of them to find the one that best fits their needs.

What Kind of Vehicles Qualify?

A wide array of makes and models are typically available for bad credit financing. But depending on the lender and dealership a consumer chooses, the age, mileage, and price of a vehicle usually play a big part. Vehicle eligibility varies by lender, but these are the most common rules:

  • Model Year Matters – Subprime lenders typically finance vehicles that are 10 years old or newer (2008 model year). Usually, the newer the vehicle, the more likely they are to finance.
  • Based on Mileage – Financing is usually only available on cars that have less than 80,000 to 100,000 miles on the odometer, regardless of how old the vehicle is. The mileage allowed will also vary by loan term.
  • Minimum Financing – On top of other restrictions, lenders typically set a minimum financing amount of $5,000, though it’s up to the lender.
  • Clean Titles – Lenders also only finance vehicles with clean titles. No branded, flood-damaged, rebuilt, or salvage titles will apply.
