The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the 2018 Ford Expedition SUV a five-star overall crash test rating – the highest possible score from the agency. This makes the Expedition the only vehicle in its segment to earn a five-star rating.
“As a father of four and longtime Expedition owner, safety was a top priority when engineering the entirely new Expedition,” said Andrew Kernahan, the chief program engineer for the Ford Expedition. “We are proud of the many features Expedition offers today that help keep our customers safe on the road.”
The all-new Ford Expedition has a fully boxed steel frame, and a high-strength, military-grade aluminum-alloy body, which helps lower the vehicle's center of gravity for enhanced stability and driving dynamics, according to the automaker. New materials also helped reduce the vehicle's weight by 325 pounds.
The Expedition is packed with safety features as well, offering available dual seat belt pyrotechnic pre-tensioners, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, enhanced active park assist, and automatic high beams.
Ford worked to give the Expedition a strong foundation that helps improve driver and passenger safety. It remains to be seen whether competitors will be able to match its five-star safety rating from the NHTSA.
