2019 Hyundai Veloster Adds Power, Maintains Fuel Economy

The 2019 Hyundai Veloster adds power with a new base engine, but despite the extra grunt, it's not going to cause many more problems at the gas pump.

The new 2.0-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder returns 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, a significant bump from last year's model, when a 1.6-liter four-cylinder provided 132 hp and 120 lb-ft of torque. But while last year's model returned 28 miles per gallon city, 35 highway, and 31 combined (with the optional six-speed dual-clutch automatic), the larger, more powerful 2019 engine only loses a point in each rating.

Go with the standard six-speed manual, and the 2.0-liter returns 25 mpg city, 33 highway, and 28 combined, representing a more significant drop over last year's 1.6-liter/manual-trans combo, which netted 27 city, 34 highway, and 30 combined.

The Veloster's optional 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder – a carryover from last year – still produces 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, but it actually improves at the pump. The 2019 model earns an EPA-estimated 28 mpg city, 34 highway, and 30 combined with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, while last year's Veloster Turbo saw 26 mpg city, 32 highway, and 29 combined. The manual is better too, at 26 city, 33 highway, and 29 combined compared to last year's 25 city, 33 highway, and 28 combined.

The improved fuel economy on the Veloster Turbo and the negligible drop on the base model despite the extra power is likely down to tweaked aerodynamics, including a front air curtain that reduces drag around the front axle, and improved powertrain internal that reduce friction.
