The 2020 Cadillac XT6 becomes the first vehicle from the American luxury brand to earn one of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) awards. Models built after October 2019 did well enough to be named a Top Safety Pick SUV.
In the IIHS’ crash tests, the XT6 earned a score of Good in all six of them. The SUV has two different LED headlights, both of which earned a rating of Acceptable. When it came to the front crash prevention system, the XT6’s standard system earned the highest rating of Superior.
Only models built after October meet the criteria to be named a Top Safety Pick. Those SUVs received changes to their side curtain airbags that provide better occupant protection in the IIHS’ passenger-side small overlap crash test.
With the XT6 sharing the same platform as the GMC Acadia, we won’t be surprised to see that SUV earn one of the institute’s awards in the near future. The IIHS hasn’t completed its headlight test on that SUV yet, but last year’s model failed to earn an award because of its headlights that earned ratings of Marginal and Poor.
The XT6 joins the Infiniti QX60, Lexus RX, and Volvo XC90 as midsize luxury SUVs that are Top Safety Picks. The BMW X5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class were named Top Safety Pick+ SUVs.
