The Toyota Avalon's first-ever TRD model has been priced from $43,255, order guides reveal. The figure is based on an MSRP of $42,300 and destination charge of $955. The pricing makes the edgiest Avalon yet $200 more expensive than the Limited trim ($43,055) and $200 less than the range-topping Touring ($43,455).
First revealed last November, the 2020 Avalon TRD boasts track-inspired upgrades like unique aerodynamic bodywork, thicker braces for better rigidity, special springs that lower the car 0.6 inches, and bigger brakes. A TRD dual cat-back exhaust, special embossed seats, and lighter wheels in matte black round out the look.
But will anyone actually buy it? Sales of full-size cars have fallen and the Avalon already offers an aggressively-styled trim called the XSE that will continue to be sold alongside the TRD and has the same 301-hp V6. At $39,255, the 2020 XSE will have a $4,000 advantage in price for those unwilling to take the full TRD plunge.
For some perspective, a 365-hp Ford Taurus SHO starts at $44,070, and those looking for a dose of luxury can step up to a Lexus ES 350 with F-Sport Package ($46,375). Like most Toyotas, the Avalon TRD comes equipped with driver assistance tech like auto emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.
When it goes on sale this fall, the 2020 Avalon will be joined by another first— the 2020 Camry TRD. While we don't have pricing for that just yet, we think it's likely that it'll start just above $35,000 based on how the brand currently has the Camry XSE positioned. Stay tuned for updates closer to the on-sale date.
