Volvo has always been an automaker that puts safety first, but the 2019 Volvo S60 missed the mark in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) testing. Because of the sedan’s headlights that earned a rating of Marginal, it missed out on one of the institute’s safety ratings. For the 2020 model year, Volvo addressed the sedan’s headlights, helping the vehicle earn a Top Safety Pick+ award.

For 2020 S60 sedans, Volvo updated the vehicle’s available curve-adaptive LED headlights, which now earn a rating of Good. Previously, the headlights were found to be Marginal. The adaptive LED headlights are part of the Advanced Package that’s available on the Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription trims. They’re only available on vehicles built after May 2019.

With the new headlights, the S60 meets all of the requirements to be named a Top Safety Pick+. The sedan earned a rating of Good in all six of the IIHS’ crash tests and had a front-crash prevention system that was found to be superior.

Volvo S60

The 2020 S60 becomes the fifth vehicle from Volvo to earn either a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ rating from the automaker. It joins the Volvo S90, XC40, XC60, and XC90. The XC40 is the only other Volvo to earn a Top Safety Pick+ rating.

To get into an S60 that meets the requirements to be named a Top Safety Pick+, consumers have to opt for the $2,500 Advance Package. With the base Momentum trim, the Advance Package brings the Premium Package and the Multimedia Package, which cost $2,050 and $1,850, respectively. Total pricing for an S60 with all of the right packages costs $42,450 including destination, or $6,400 more than a base trim.

Other vehicles to earn a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS that compete in the same compact segment as the S60 include the BMW 3 Series, Lexus ES, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Tesla Model 3. The Audi A3 and Audi A4 earned a Top Safety Pick rating.
