Ford continues to introduce new packages for the mid-size Ranger. For the 2021 model year, the pickup truck is getting another new package, this time it’s called the STX Special Edition Package. Available on XL models, the package looks to give consumers the ability to tack on a few tech features and fancy wheels at a reasonable price. If you want something that’s slightly nicer than the base Ranger XL, but don’t want to pay too much for it, this new STX Special Edition Package is the way to go.
For $995, the STX Special Edition Package brings 18-inch black wheels, an 8-inch touchscreen, Ford’s SYNC infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite audio, dual-zone automatic climate control, and silver interior accents. Seeing as how the base XL trim comes with a 2.3-inch display, manual air conditioning, and 16-inch steel wheels, the package is a major tech upgrade.
The STX Special Edition Package becomes one of the more expensive ones offered on the base Ranger, sitting below the 101A that costs $1,135, but below the $595 FX2 Package. For the number of features it brings, the new package is certainly worth the extra money.
The available STX Appearance Package is only available with the 101A and costs an additional $995. It adds 17-inch wheels, fog lights, tow hooks, and premium cloth upholstery. The new STX Special Package predominantly focuses on the inside of the pickup, while the STX Appearance Package changes the way the Ranger looks on the outside.
It’s unclear how Ford plans to bundle the new STX Special Edition Package. The automaker doesn’t provide any information on whether the new package will be offered as a standalone option or if it will be bundled with another package. With the STX Appearance Package consumers are forced to add the 101A package, drastically increasing the price of what is supposed to be an affordable package. All Ford says, is that the STX Special Edition Package can be bundled with either the FX2 or FX4 Off-Road Package. Opting for either of those, though, also brings the 101A package. Ford could also force consumers to get the STX Appearance Package before allowing the box for the STX Special Edition package to be ticked.
While there’s still some confusion on how the STX Special Edition will be offered, Ford believes the package will be popular because of how Ranger customers have been specifying their trucks. The automaker claims that 75% of Ranger customers add an appearance package to the pickup and the latest one does that while bringing some more tech. Giving consumers more ways to customize their truck straight from the factory is never a bad thing and should help the pickup be more competitive.
Ford hasn’t announced official pricing for the 2021 Ranger yet. The new model year should be introduced before the end of the year, which is when consumers will be able to get the new STX Special Edition Package.
