After the 2021 Genesis GV80 midsize SUV earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest safety award, we were expecting big things from the 2021 G80. The IIHS tested the fully redesigned G80 and named the midsize sedan a Top Safety Pick+.
We’re not surprised by the score, as we were expecting the G80 to match the GV80, as the two vehicles share platforms and a lot of similar features. In the IIHS’ testing, the 2021 G80 earned a rating of “Good” in all six of the organization’s crash tests, came with standard headlights that earned an “Acceptable” rating, and had a front crash prevention system that was found to be “Superior.” These scores are identical to the GV80.
The G80 comes with a lengthy list of standard safety features. Standard features include blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, forward collision warning, driver drowsiness monitoring, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Available safety features include rear collision warning, a head-up display, remote control automated parking, a surround-view parking camera, and rear seat alert.
The Top Safety Pick+ award for the 2021 G80 matches the previous generation of the sedan, which also earned the IIHS’ highest safety rating. With the G80 earning a Top Safety Pick+ award, the South Korean luxury automaker now has four vehicles that have won one of the organization’s awards. The G70, G80, G90, and GV80 are all Top Safety Pick+ award winners. The only vehicle in the brand’s lineup that hasn’t won an award is the all-new GV70 that’s not on sale yet.
Against other midsize sedans, the G80’s safety score matches the Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Volvo S90, Acura TLX, and Lexus ES. When we drove the G80, we found the midsize sedan to offer a luscious cabin, high-end design, and ton of standard features at a price point that undercuts its competitors. With a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS, the G80 is an even better reason to choose a luxury vehicle that isn’t from Germany or Japan.
